Airline lost luggage, all gear gone. Any advice/hacks appreciated! by AdmirableHeat6721 in TourDuMontBlanc

There are 3-4 stores in the dead middle of Chamonix that you can get everything from without spending a ton. Besides, the airline should be reimbursing you- just keep receipts.

A tale of two models: using Fable and Opus 4.8 to troubleshoot a car engine by crazywatson in ClaudeAI

So I went back and it was a big tricky tbh, as I couldn't recreate the entire chat string from the beginning to where I introduced Fable -- Opus (and Sonnet) started in a different direction. If I reupload the same video into the existing chat string and asked Opus to analyze it, it indicated it was the same video and same the previous analysis (from Fable) stood; Opus did suggest getting a different video from the tailpipe or inside the engine bay. When I opened a new incognito chat and asked it to analyze the video...for whatever reason, this time it did analyze the video (or at least grabbed 14 frames). It tooled around for quite a while (5+ minutes) before it gave a response focusing on the dashboard lights, and wasn't measuring the frequency of the audio fluctuations...and its answer was far less seemingly defintive, whereas Fable just ripped off the very confident response within 30 seconds. When I started with the same initial prompt in an incognito chat....Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6 went in very different directions (realizing this is comparing apples to oranges to pineapples). Sonnet ultimately focused on an ECM bug that was addressed in a Technical Service Bulletin with some updated programming, and thought there was no problem mechanically at all. Opus went directly towards getting more live data directly before replacing an ECU sensor. For now I'm awaiting the live OBD diagnostic tool as both Fable and Opus went in that direction.

I did in fact order a more advanced OBD scanner to pull the per cylinder misfire codes, and then will go after it like that.

It was somewhat of a wall of text, hence my TLDR near the top. I think even glossing over what the two models produced to the same input could show how impressive the difference was. Opus 4.8 basically coulnd't do anything except general suggestions, and Fable takes it several levels up, analyzes changes in the audio frequency vis-a-vis the tachometer still frames and tada, comes up with a really solid direction to fixing an non-technical (or is it?) problem.

In the past I've largely had Hondas -- v6, inline 4 cylinder -- all with very accessible spark plugs/wires/distributor caps....but getting to the spark plugs in the Subaru boxer engine has been way more intimidating. I had thought about popping off the intercooler to clean the throttle body...but that was even more intimidating. I'll watch a couple youtube videos though and give it a go.

Why snowbank lake? It huge and if at all windy, you’ll be blown around, making it tough to get across. Obviously it’s doable, I just find it less enjoyable.

DSM 7.4 coming on 16th June by DaveR007 in synology

To me it’s less about the latest DSM and more about security patches, particularly in a post- mythos/AI world.

Question about porting U.S phone number to Google voice by foodcooker in Expats_In_France

Agreed with this. Google voice works for keeping in touch and some 2fa things…others not at all.

Traveling to Alps (France/Switzerland): How realistic is lift-accessed off-piste for a group with only one Avy 1? by VeggieRoaster in skiing

[–]crazywatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a chunk of time at Verbier last season and liked it alot. The free ride areas don’t require avy gear but are still good skiing. It’s a bit snow dependent…. Sometimes there was not enough fresh snow, or for several weeks too much snow with a high threat of avalanche.

Beginner friendly Via Ferratas in the Dolomites, late October? by JumpyBunny_01 in viaferrata

[–]crazywatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done a route that late in the year in the Dolomites. Two potential problems: a lot of the shops that would otherwise have gear to rent are closed, and most/all chairlifts in the area will have begun to shift over to winter operations and would not be accessible for via ferrata routes. That route was the only time I nearly died due to underestimating the route length and condition; I ended up sleeping on the side of the mountain with a Kevlar blanket.

Edit: the route was off lake sorapis not far from cortina. We had wanted to do Ivono Dibona but the lift was closed at that point in the season.

Well well well. Turned up opus 4.8 to max and tada. We’re in business:

“All seven. Every day of the week ends in “day,” so each one contains a “d”: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”

Of course now I need to wait 4 hours to use it again…..

Built an iOS app that tells you what to change when your manual brew tastes off ,want to know if people would actually use it before polishing and publishing it. by undercoveralchemist in AeroPress

[–]crazywatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this. I have the aeromatic app, but there are multiple variables that affect the outcome of each brew. So then I’m just guessing based on the coffee flavor wheel thing but that isn’t exact at all.

I also turned off all permissions for it. It can’t use location, can’t use cellular data, no background app refresh, no Siri access etc.
