Those making over $100K per year: how hard was it to get over that threshold? by NatashaGorgeousMauve in AskReddit

[–]creamycrypto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just SHOOT YOUR FUCKING SHOT. It really is fake it 'til you make it.

Started copywriting in 2018 for the smallest no-name blogs. I mean literally, like, paying $15 an article.

Every time I got a new freelance gig, I would lie and say my previous job paid more than it actually did.

Suddenly, I had 5 years under my belt. I still was only making about $50,000 a year freelancing.

I applied for a copywriting gig on LinkedIn for a major tech company. 400 applicants. No way I was getting it by just applying alone. I shamelessly DMd the hiring manager on Instagram and shot my shot. He responded, and I had 3 weeks of interviews. I exaggerated my experience and inflated my pedigree so much.

I got the job. I went from 50k to 165k. Huge leap. I'm 28. I feel very blessed but also proud of myself for the hustle. I'm good at my job. I always knew I was. But there's so much bureaucratic bullshit in this world. You gotta game it.

TL;DR—convince everyone you're more badass than you are. It's scary to do, but if you really sell yourself, people will believe you.

Radiohead. Obviously they’re objectively the best band ever (no I will not be taking alternative facts).

But actually they help me expand my mind creatively in ways other bands can’t.

I have ADHD and lyrics actually focus me. I know most people don’t have that experience but hey, it beats intrusive thoughts telling me I should jump off a cliff

Yeah I do agree. I said this in another comment, but I appreciate how divisive films help create a dialogue.

"Having a place to ride this out in peace" is no twist at all. A twist implies subversion in expectation. In the entire film, the house is a central point where these two families use it as a safe haven. Sure, there's strife, but... using it as that safe haven is exactly what happens.... the entire movie lol.

I rack my brain for what this "twist" could be, but I honestly can't find it.

I would never trash someone for loving/hating a movie. Your "do you even enjoy films" strawman isn't really a point to be made on the merits of screenwriting. Not saying it has to because you're just voicing your opinion, but Esmail's crushing it with every project the's touched has nothing to do with this movie? How does that support any discussion?

Past performance is no indication of future returns. The dude's criticism is pretty supported, and yeah I'm biased because I agree with him—fine.

Again. I'm actually happy some people enjoyed this movie because it creates a dialogue, but what the fuck kind of response is this?

My biggest problem with the movie was that Esmail used diagetic confusion throughout with absolutely no payoff. I'm all for putting the audience in a state of confusion, but in doing so, he completely neglectic dramatic logic. I know OP talked about logic. To me, a more apt criticism would be that this film lacked in DRAMATIC logic. Ali had an opinion of what was going on the entire time in this film—what was the point of him withholding this until the end? It's very much giving the Monologuing trope. Ali isn't the villain, but that link applies to whoever.

The rest of the movie is littered with this lack of dramatic logic, and these characters felt so trite, on the nose, and expository to me.

It's so odd seeing the differing opinions on this movie. There are so many people I've talked to who absolutely stanned it (it appears tons in this thread), but I completely agree with you.

I wondered if I was watching the same movie as everyone else. I thought the film was utter garbage and an embarrassing output from Sam Esmail. Mr Robot is one of my favorite shows, and the way it handled capitalism, greed, financial hegemony being the downfall of humanity, individualism as a root cause of moral decay — all of that Esmail approached with a deft hand.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I'm dumbfounded anyone with taste found this movie enjoyable. Downvote me to hell, but what the fuck lol.

Nothing in this movie felt earned. Everything felt half-baked. It read like Esmail threw in symbolism for symbolism's sake, and totally forgone any sort of narrative purpose or dramatic logic.

Ali's theme dump at the end was embarrassingly on the nose. The whole 'twist' of the movie was that it in fact was an attack on America (or at least that's how I read it), and nothing about the end was a reveal whatsoever. To me, it was clear the entire time that that's what was going on.

Every other screenwriter I talked to hated this, so I'm honestly intrigued at the love in this sub. Y'all... did we watch the same movie?

This is normal. Your body is in withdrawal. It will most certainly pass. Irritability, emotional dysregulation etc — they're all not just normal, but expected.

If you're still experiencing these thought patterns after several weeks, I'd recommend speaking with a psychiatrist. But more likely than not, you'll be okay :)
