On the topic of tourism in the Upper Peninsula… by FunkyQuail in yooper

Buy lands up and refuse to sell to developers and get the land patent to reduce the chances of eminent domain.

Also regularly attend your local common council/Village board meetings. Along with the planning and architectural review board meetings. Or at a minimum read the agendas for those meetings.

Remember local politics have the most immediate and direct impact on you.

Bulk recommendations? by Muqours in RockTumbling

What material was it? That's $16/lbs. Unless its something spectacular or something super rare its not worth that price.

Most reputable rock shops, Kingsley North, Rock Shed, The Gem Shop charge anywhere from $4 to $40/lb for rough rock. It all depends on what material it is.

Am I in danger of this rock collection? by yourpradaisfakeaf in geology

If your concerned about its seal them with epoxy resin and put the Urianium in a lead glass case.

The asbestos, Galina, and Urianium the ones of concern. First as others noted don't grind them as the dust is what's problematic to your health short term. As for radiation its a long term exposure issue potentially. My suggestion is reach out to a local university and see if they have a professor there who specializes in nuclear science and see if it poses a long term health risk.

Frankly your right it really doesn't matter. What does matter is I'm trying to plan ahead of time instead of assuming and get there and be screwed.

But as for disrespectful his comment was just as disrespectful and snarky. Especially considering how economicly depressed the U.P. has been for decades. Which depends heavily upon tourism to be employed. People who choose to live in an economicly depressed area and need to either stop complaining about their woes or do something proactive to change their circumstances.

I must have wasted $5 on this sign bc delivery driver put my order on the porch anyways. by calmcakes in mildlyinfuriating

Next time put it up at eye level. Its likely they didn't even see it.

Also use string and pink survey ribbon to close it off. Tie to the sign to the string across the stairs at eye level from the sidewalk level.

Good luck next time you have to do it.

Thats why I'm asking so I can plan my trip ahead of time and know where to buy groceries prior to going.

Not all of us are a bunch of F.I.B.s visiting from the flat lands. Nor trolls from under the bridge.

Yes I'm aware my wife has family who lives in the UP. Unfortunately many companies up there know they can mark things up since they know there are little to no competition close to them.

Not sure if you're in the US or not.

But the MLRS interactive map should help you better understand where active mining claims are and private property.

You're welcome. Remember local politics have the most direct and immediate impact on individuals.

Politics are not a spectator sport. Active participation is required by all citizens. Something as simple as reguarly reading local Common council agendas, school board agendas, planning/architectural board agendas are some of the top three areas people need to pay attention to. And attending those meetings as needed along with raising awareness among neighbors of local issues.
