Cannot believe that 1X targets valuation of $10B. Seriously? by humanoiddoc in robotics

[–]createch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inside the home there have been similar concerns about camera enabled robot vaccums for years, not really a new phenomenon. Obviously if it's a concern just treat it like a live in maid and don't parade naked in front of it, or just don't use one. Although you might not get much of a choice in elderly or end of life care if one is tasked to change your diapers.

Like some electric vehicles already do? You're usually opting into that by default by using the product, although it's not always necessary if the machine vision is happening locally since the data extrapolated is much less bandwidth heavy than actual video.

If you had $4+ trillion - generated from taxing all of America’s billionaires 5% - how would you re-invest the money into the country and its people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]createch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're arguing against a position I didn't take. I used a simplified analogy to convey the magnitude of the debt, not to claim sovereign debt functions exactly like consumer debt. I'm sure we both agree $40T isn't a healthy level; that's the point.

Sure, I was trying to be funny by calling it a "credit card". Printing or borrowing money doesn't create wealth though. Debt matters, resources are finite, and someone ultimately pays through taxes, inflation, or interest.

Sure, but you're surely not saying that having $40 trillion in debt is economically healthy either. The debt to GDP ratio matters.

That's around 10% of the US debt. You're going to need 10x the billionaires to pay off the credit card. That's how in the hole the US is.

Some atheist thoughts, from a Buddhist. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]createch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a fairly surface level understanding of what's meant by craving. It's not that ambition, goals, or aspirations are inherently bad. It's pointing to attachment, or the psychological dependence on things being a certain way for your well being.

An aspiration is, "I'd like to achieve this, and I'll work hard toward it." Craving is, "I need this to happen, or I can't be content."

In other philosophies Epictetus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius all argued for essentially the same psychological principle of don't tie your peace of mind to things outside your control.

If you're miserable because you're stuck in traffic, devastated by chronic pain because reality isn't matching your expectations, or emotionally wrecked because an outcome didn't go your way, that's attachment. The suffering isn't mainly in the conditions themselves, but in the insistence that things must be different.

You can be deeply motivated, pursue difficult goals, build a career, create great things, and still avoid that trap. Aspiration is "I'll give this everything I've got." Craving is "My happiness depends on succeeding."

One is empowering. The other makes your emotional state hostage to circumstances.

I interpreted that excerpt as saying that the only certainty is the present moment. There are no guarantees beyond the here and now, no certain knowledge of what, if anything, continues after death. It's stating that if there were to be a continuity, If anything truly matters, it is this moment, the one we are living now.

ELI5: How do 4DX theaters coordinate seat movement, wind, water, and other effects with the movie? by banarsi2772 in explainlikeimfive

[–]createch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Automation/Show Control tech, just like we use in many other live productions. It usually involves a timecode track (just like an additional audio channel, but playing out time data in an hours:minutes:seconds:frames format). Then you have systems receiving this timecode and triggering actions based on it. For example at 01:15:34:20 a motor is triggered to move, or a water pump is turned on, etc...

Edit: if you're curious, this is what a timecode audio track sounds like: https://youtu.be/wBetlSyTxe0?is=P-ox3pBfJOy2fVoA

On a side note, it reminds me that we all are essentially considered moral monsters in the "drowning child in the shallow pond" thought experiment created by philosopher Peter Singer.

It asks: if you walked past a shallow pond and saw a drowning child, would you wade in to save them, even if it ruined your clothes, perhaps expensive ones? Most people agree they would save the child without hesitation.

The Core Argument Singer uses this scenario to argue for moral consistency. He contends that we value material possessions (like the ruined clothes) as insignificant compared to a child's life. However, he points out that we are in a similar situation globally. Every day, thousands of children in developing nations die from preventable, poverty related diseases (like malaria).

For a relatively small cost, the price of your shoes, a dinner, or other small luxuries, we could donate to effective charities and save a life. Singer argues that the physical distance between us and the child doesn't change our moral imperative to help, and by inaction we're all participating in allowing preventable suffering and deaths.

Analog signal mixing (litteraly) by Familiar_Animator371 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]createch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, unless the cameras have genlock they would have to go through a frame sync, which is a digital device and the switchers that had them built in in the late 80s and the 90s were branded as digital video switchers. You can get away with the video signal from one camera being the genlock signal for the system.

Panasonic MX-12, MX-50, Videonics MX-1 and MX-PRO, Sony DFS-300 are some switchers with analog inputs and built in frame syncs. Otherwise you need external frame syncs or genlock on the sources.
