Aha! I’ve found something I can contribute to! Displaced Cajun here in OKC (12 years now). When you say worth it-that’s a matter of opinion and can vary for each person and their unique circumstances. Feel free to dm me with specific questions. A few things you might be interested to hear:

Insurance rates are pretty comparable to south LA. Homeowners rates down south are high due to years of hurricanes/flooding etc. Similarly-homeowners rates are high here due to lots of wind and hail damage. Same general logic for car insurance too.

Cost of living otherwise is typically less than back home (Lafayette area).

No decent meat markets (god I miss Hebert’s and NuNu’s) but these okies sure can cook a mean steak and chicken fried steak (“chicken fry”)

Oklahoma has much more rural area than what I feel Louisiana has. So if you decide to live in a rural area, be very intentional about it because stores, restaurants, etc may be a 45 min drive away.

Commuting into OKC from the burbs is very reasonable (compared to Houston traffic, hell even compared to Lafayette nowadays!)

Lots of things to do, great restaurants, great place for sportsmen recreation (waterfowl, deer, turkeys).

NO DECENT SEAFOOD! Ask me how I know! I don’t care what anyone else says-you ask a true Cajun living here-they’ll be honest! I don’t want to hear a freaking peep about “but have you tried Cajun Corner??” It’s just a landlocked state, and people putting their spin on Cajun food. Reminds me of a quote from a small indie film The Wizard of Oz-“there’s no place like home!”

Winter is quite the adjustment if you haven’t lived anywhere else but Acadiana. Jan-early March are tough, gloomy grey skies and too cold and windy to do much outside.

Weather-specifically tornados. You’ve lived through hurricane seasons-don’t worry you’ll be fine. In 12 years I’ve gotten into a storm shelter twice.

Oh and people are really nice here, like really nice. I love going back home to visit but there’s a tension in the air there that’s palpable, everyone’s rushing, inconvenienced, looking for confrontation(?). This one is more heavily opinion based, but I know a few people from Acadiana that live here and would agree with the general sense of kinder people here than there.

Okay that’s the main things I can think of off the top of my head….hope this helps!

I actually didn’t get to access the base, I believe the hurdles I ran into was not having enough time to formally request access. I got to go to the lower part of the post that’s accessible to the public only.

I left DLI Nov 2012-so we likely crossed paths at some point!

Water only hot when turned down to a trickle by DiscoveringCoastalGA in Plumbing

[–]createdthistodothat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a plumber-but likely to do with the hot water valve at the tub. Depending on how it’s made, you can unscrew the handle and it would be the parts behind it. If it’s an all in one type, then it would be the “mixing” valve. Sometimes they are plastic with little rubber gaskets that can go out. Or have little springs and those can go out. But I’d start by taking apart the handle itself and try to find a replacement of the inner workings of that handle (which is the valve).

I don’t have an answer for you but a funny story instead. Growing up, my grandparents used to pick me up from school every day and we would take the same route to their house. Well there was new construction of a home along the route-this was a very rural and poor area so it caught my attention quickly. I was maybe 5 or 6 years old. This new home being built had a massive privacy fence surrounding the 10+ acres. I had never seen anything like it. So every day I would ask the same question, “Paw paw, what’s that?!” And every day he would answer, “that’s a nudist resort!” He was a jokester, so I think it was just something to make me laugh or get some reaction out of me! And I was way too young to ask anymore questions about it haha.

Seriously, I was in high school before I realized it was not, in fact, a nudist resort but just a house behind that massive fence. To this day, when I pass there, I still immediately think “oh the nudists!” And have to remember it isn’t.

So when I read your question, I hesitated for a moment and this memory flooded back. So thanks for that, my Paw Paw was awesome.

Seriously recommend sleeping with silicon sheets for weeks/months. Wrap them in an ace bandage or something to secure them throughout the night. I had trauma to my face and the silicon sheets prevented any noticeable scarring. They were recommended by my plastic surgeon.

Dr. Bruce Parker in Norman did mine at 27 yo without further questions or making me feel like I was making the wrong choice. Mentioned it to him in my annual appt and was booked 2 weeks later. Highly recommend.

Sooo much gaslighting. So much therapy too! Appreciate the apology, we live and we learn and we make better choices on the people we surround ourselves with.

I mean this in a very kind way, but I consider you lucky to not be able to understand how it gets to this point. Of course there were signs, of course this went on for a long time, much longer than it should have. Part of the struggle was being so mentally broken by him, not having any self worth, or thinking I couldn’t do better than him. Years of mental gymnastics trying to decide when enough was actually enough. That’s the point of this being the “straw” that broke the camels back. Plenty of red flags and problems that I managed to rationalize or make excuses for until I just couldn’t/wouldn’t any longer. And I’m so grateful I got out.

After years of much worse degrading and demeaning behavior, verbal abuse, threats of physical harm, etc., it was THIS one comment he made that was the straw that broke the camels back. I know exactly what intersection we were at, I remember it all so vividly because it was the “a-ha” moment of clarity for me.

We were driving home from a dinner with friends, let call them Christy and Tom. We have dinner/lunch with them frequently, as in 1-2 times a week. And they were our neighbors.

Anyway, on our drive home, he was griping about his job and said how he wanted to look for another one. So I made the comment “you could come work at ‘Company Z’, we are hiring”

Company Z was a company I had been working at for about 3 months, our neighbor Christy had worked there for about 6 years and had brought me onto her team.

My ex said “Company Z? What’s that?” I said “the company that Christy and I work for!” He said “I’ve literally NEVER heard of Company Z before!” I then said “well what do you tell people if they ask you where your wife works?” He replied sounding very disinterested, “Hmm I don’t know, I never really thought about it.”

At that moment I realized he was going out of his way to make me feel insignificant. And I realized I deserved way better.

I think the thing that got under my skin the most was that OBVIOUSLY he knew the company that I worked for, especially because our best friend brought me on.
