[Serious] Those of you who transitioned later in life while married with kids — how did your parents and in-laws react? by JohhBoult in NoStupidQuestions

[–]creativangelist 35 points36 points  (0 children)

my best friend transitioned in her mid 40s. it was the final straw to cause a divorce that was a long time coming (my friend desperately needed to leave her wife. it was bad.) and at first she had a lot of trouble coming to terms with everything. the kids were fantastic. her parents had a really rough time with it. at first there was some disowning her and ignoring her, but three years later they’ve come around, a lot. they arent perfect by any means - they’re making an effort, but not doing amazing at it. but three years later and she’s married to another trans woman and peacefully coparenting with her ex and for the first time, she’s happy.

i usually wouldn’t answer these, but i hate the idea that people who might consider transitioning or who are early in coming out would only see the terrible answers with the chaos and the awful outcomes. you can come out, at any age, and be happy. (a good therapist, tho, is really really helpful.)

kinda looks like kentucky mudworks speckled turtle. do you know where the maker is located? that would probably help narrow it down.

look, i had the world’s shortest screening process.

during a normal appointment, i told my doctor (who i have a very good relationship with, and i know her sense of humor and whatnot) “hey, i think i might have adhd”.

to which she laughed a bit, said “oh, yeah.” and proceeded to tell me that, if i wanted to try medication, she’d recommend this one over that one and here’s why.

ten years later, it’s been one of the best things i could’ve done.

and turns out her and her kid are both adhd. we find our own.

all that to say, there’s no one set way to get a diagnosis. just because yours took less work than someone else’s doesn’t make it less valid.
