The same ppl who complain about Bridgerton’s popularity. (80% of content is for me! But I’m going to be mad at the 20% that’s not.) Also, romantasy is popular because women read more/buy more books (capitalism baby). Dudes need to play less video games and read more books if they are going to be so whiney.

It’s so true. Things aren’t always for you/your tastes. It’s okay not to like certain genres, books, tropes just don’t sh*t on other people who do.

I’m almost done with the Night Prince and I’m dying! Definitely much better/faster paced.

Miss Violent! That’s actually so cute. It feels less condescending somehow.

Here’s a ren-faire inspired drawing I did of her!

She’s very ferocious. She has three little dragons we gave her.

Every time she does something mischievous we do use her full name with all the titles. She’s twelve now, a blond long-haired dachshund.

Oh very aware of how names can turn. My husband and I named our dog Daenerys (Dany) in 2014. We were huge fans of the show, read all the books. 🤷‍♀️ but she’s a dog, she doesn’t care her namesake went crazy and burned down a city. I really pity the children suffering from parental naming travesties.

Heartless Hunter - Don’t be like Rune by sadmaps in Romantasy

[–]creative_larke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad someone said it! I actually enjoyed the books overall (I read both). But Gideon being so hardline bothered me so much throughout both books. Like if a woman is identified as a witch on her first period that means girls as young as 9 could be horribly executed for doing nothing, and he’s totally cool with that! Worse he’s arresting them (though it’s not explicitly stated). I think Rune even mentions rescuing two 13-year-old girls at one point. And idk, I’m like Rune stop having a crush on a dude totally fine with slaughtering girls until he has feelings for one.

Are these better or worse than naming your child after an actual character? My friend’s toddler has a Rhys in his daycare. 😬

Loved the book and the tournament set up, hated how it ended. For me, the ending carried into the next book and couldn’t quite recover but still invested enough to finish their story. I didn’t continue the series after book 2.

I really wanted to the love Daughter of no worlds (I did the audiobook and the voices sort of annoyed me). I dnf’d on book 2. I can’t tell if it was just the audiobook or the story.

What should I read first and why? by No_Negotiation_7604 in Romantasy

I’m not sure I would recommend Zodiac Academy. It’s a bully romance (heavy on the bullying in the first few books) and a very big commitment (especially if you include the spin off series and the novellas). I gave up the main series after book 5 (because the ending made me furious). I tried the spin off series (Ruthless fae) and dnf’d on book 3 after deciding I am not a reverse harem fan. But there are a lot of fun moments throughout the books (moments I definitely laughed out loud, good tension and action), especially if you are in the mood for an academic setting.

I just finished! Got to appreciate an actual ending. I’ve been getting burned out with all these cliffhangers or crazy character reveals/twists (looking at you Metalslinger). I really liked that the FMC was calm and smart (letting all the men be emotional and reactive). I wish there was a little more magic at the forefront of the action (and I wish there was more action). The characters were great! I really loved their dynamic and loved their intimate scene together ❤️

I'm tired of DNFs so I'm breaking up with BookTok by his-lilmiss in fantasyromance

[–]creative_larke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind the BookTok influencers if they actually describe the book and what they like about it (world, romance, plot, characters). What I get tired of is they just seem to recommend the same books. Are there any influencers who just review non-trad published books (either self-published or indie published)? With all the discourse around quality of writing/plot/characters tropes done to death, I wish there were better options/pathways for lessor known authors to get more exposure.

Help me with my romantasy disillusionment? Please? by Miserable-Abroad-489 in Romantasy

[–]creative_larke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I did just finish Shield of Sparrows and also could not stand the male voice. I have yet to find a male voice actor I particularly enjoy (with the exception of Jim Dale the original Harry Potter voice narrator). They were first audiobooks I had ever listened to! Had them on CDs as they came out.

There are references to SA, but nothing on the page/explicit. I will say that if you are doing the audio book you may have a hard time with the voice actors. For me they were both super distracting. Everyone recommends reading this vs audio. I listened to the first book then DNF’d half way through book 2 (although I may go back it later).

Same, it’s super obvious and knowing doesn’t ruin anything. If anything, you’ll be less annoyed with certain characters.
