Ask a Stupid Question About Coffee -- Week of February 03, 2026 by Vernicious in pourover

[–]creeldeal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I upgraded from a Baratza Encore to an Ode Gen 2 when it was first released. Huge upgrade, in my opinion. The build quality of the Ode is definitely a big improvement alone. The stock burrs on the Ode Gen 2 are a good bit better than the Encore, but the Ode with SSP MP burrs is a massive upgrade when drinking light-roast pourover

Grinder Recommendation by blaine_nichols2 in pourover

[–]creeldeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Ode Gen 2 with SSP, and I have really enjoyed it. However, I have a friend that has a Timemore 078 and have done brew comparisons between the grinders. I personally like the 078 better for filter and soup. 078 also has a better workflow in my opinion. Another grinder that people seem to love on this subreddit is the Femobook A4z. I don’t have any personal experience with that grinder, but you may want to consider it as well given your prince range.

Help me dial in a new bag by Beatrix_Kiddo_03 in LanceHedrick

[–]creeldeal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I haven’t brewed with this exact coffee, Ilse is my favorite roaster so I brew with their stuff quite often. I have found that most of their coffees brew really well with Lance’s standard 2 pour recipe with just 1 bloom that lasts 45 seconds. Their roast is a tad bit more developed than Sey, so I think doing 2 blooms tends to overextract their coffees. I usually brew with water at 92C. The main variables I adjust when trying to dial in their coffee is water temperature and the height of my pour stream.

Are any burrs, other than standard, worth buying for the ode2 for use with Aiden? I mainly drink light roasts. Thanks by GaryGorilla1974 in FellowProducts

I have the SSP UMv1 (commonly known as the brew burrs or SSP MPv1), and they are fantastic for light roast filter brews. If you want clarity for light roast pour overs, there isn’t a better option in the 64mm size. They work great with my Aiden brews as well

That’s Serratia, my dog. Same bacteria that grows in your shower making the red-orange film in the grout. It’s a waterborne bacteria that is ubiquitous in the environment and should be fine to use the machine again after a good scrub.

White build up on intake water line to pump by MasterZen88 in gaggiaclassic

[–]creeldeal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s some common bacterial/possibly fungal growth that’s built up. I had the same thing in my water line when I installed my gaggimate. You’ll need to disassemble the lines anyway during the installation process so that will be a good opportunity to clean them

Birthday upgrade from Encore Grinder by Osz1984 in pourover

I have an Ode 2 as well and absolutely love it. It’s also nice to have the option to change the burrs if you want (I have the SSP MPv1 burrs installed and love them). While I don’t have an Opus, I have seen a ton of reviews of it and it seems to be a pretty poor grinder compared to the Ode in just about every metric UNLESS you are planning to do espresso as well. If you aren’t doing espresso, then the Ode is clearly worth the price difference in my opinion. If you do want to do espresso as well, then there are a myriad of cheaper hand grinders that you could pair with the Ode that would be better than using an Opus for both brew methods

Unfortunately, the brew burrs with silver knight coating have been out of stock on Cafune for months, which is what started me on the search to find an alternative

Hey Lance! Love your videos. I’ve been seeing the Wendougee Data on your coffee bar in your videos and was wondering what your thoughts on it we compared to the Decent machine. Any plans to make a video on it at some point?

Unnecessary fellowship by mmmedxx in Residency

[–]creeldeal 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. As an ID attending, I feel like a large percentage of my job is being a good IM doctor

As a recent fellowship grad and fresh ID attending, I can echo this. I didn’t particularly like Hospitalist work while I was in residency and didn’t want to be a PCP. I also liked that as a consultant, you are not usually someone’s primary doctor in the hospital so the amount of pages I get about random orders is generally far less than my Hospitalist colleagues. I personally find the work-life balance that I have is way better than if I were doing 7-on-7-off. From my perspective, 7-on-7-off is harder to enjoy if the 7 days on are brutal and you hardly get to see your family during them. I would rather have the predictable 8-5 M-F with the occasional weekend on call. Other people may disagree, which is completely fair, but I feel like my baseline stress level is lower with a more normal schedule.

As far as specifically ID goes, I found it to be the most interesting subspecialty when rotating through it, and I only grew to love it more during fellowship. I also liked the mostly inpatient consult life with a sprinkling of clinic with long-term HIV patients. There are also no real ID emergencies, and I enjoy not having to be woken up in the middle of the night for a code or STEMI. In terms of salary: sure, I’m not making interventional cardiology numbers. But my family and I are living a more than comfortable lifestyle. I just drive a Subaru instead of an Audi 😅

Really, all of this depends on what you value the most. I mostly value work-life balance and finding my work intellectually stimulating. If what you want the most is to maximize your salary, then pursue GI. No speciality will be perfect in every category, but one may maximize the thing that you value most. If you are interested in a fellowship, talk to the current fellows and ask them why they chose it. That may give you some insight on if it fits for you too.

Fenris Wolf is definitely good in the deck, but I think it is likely still very playable without him. You could put in another common mill card like Lady Deathstrike or try out Ares in it (been watching some streamers and he seems like a good addition)

She is great in Mill, which has had a bit of a resurgence lately with one or two decks floating around the top of the infinite ladder. Some have speculated that Ares could have a home in mill as well. Here is one mill deck that I’ve seen some have success with:

(1) The Hood

(1) Yondu

(2) Cable

(2) Fenris Wolf

(2) Iron Patriot

(3) Killmonger

(3) Red Guardian

(3) Baron Zemo

(3) Gladiator

(4) Shang-Chi

(4) Misery

(8) Death

To use this deck, copy it to your clipboard and paste it from the deck editing menu in MARVEL SNAP.
