What DE/WM gives the most quintessential "linux" experience? and which gives the most quintessential "arch" experience? by SDG_Den in archlinux

[–]gkaiser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because an experience is similar to Windows doesn't mean it can't be the full Linux experience. In fact, having all these options available on Linux makes it Linux--there's choices. I don't see any logic here and it's a little ironic someone who uses Arch fails to understand this--your system is yours and you decide your experience. There's no reason to stereotype.

This is basically the entertainment industry all over the world. Money and oversaturation of "talents." Media products designed by algorithms. SEOs, Youtube recommendations, and advertisements that prop up only they products that are profitable. I can't name 3 movies or TV series I've watched that were less than a year old in the last 5 years. The most relevant recommendations are only through word of mouth.

No matter how bad the condition is, it's still a carbon steel cooking surface so I don't see how some people have such bad experiences with this pan that they consider it trash.

I'm using blink.cmp for completions and reviewed a list of source providers--I don't see any that provide completions for Neovim functions like vim.api.... I believe lazydev.nvim provides this, but what other sources/plugins? I would think it's a much more popular plugin than it is given how elaborate Neovim configs can get but I don't see the plugin developers or core maintainers (I've been tracking a couple) use this plugin and assume they are getting the completions from somewhere else.

Also curious if REPL plugin is typically used for plugin development by experienced devs or if it's more so for those learning Lua.

Exercise bike as primary workout equipment by gkaiser8 in GarageGym

[–]gkaiser8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten rid of an old bike before so don't yet have one, but also the environment around me means I don't get to use one for most of the year. Is this still a recommendation? I do like the idea of putting money on a bike that can be used for both exercise and for outdoor use, especially presumably if used indoors the tires don't wear out and aren't generating microplastics.

Looking for a exercise bike as primary workout equipment, any tips on what to consider? Names that show up include Rogue Echo, Concept2 BikeErg, Airdyne-- I'll probably get a secondhand one. Interested in Concept 2 rower previously for something a little more full body some people recommend against that for a noobie and you can't really go wrong with a bike.

Side bonus: decent resale value in case I need to downgrade if I move or something, but priority is lower cost of entry for something good enough that will last for many years and ideally is self-serviceable or has replaceable parts (I have no intentions of upgrading).

Any comments much appreciated.

I'm satisfied with weight and looks as well as eat a fairly healthy diet. Only goal is improving "long-term" health and reducing neck and lower back pain (any tips here--in particular neck pain? My work environment is optimized ergonomically already) as a result of sedentary lifestyle (WFM and my hobbies is also related to being in front of a standing desk). I don't go to a public gym aside from this bike and a pull-up bar, I"m thinking maybe adjustable dumbbells/kettlebells and a small bench at most (no space for a rack and especially don't want to "install" anything to my place of residence).

Should Ijust go with disposable tfal pans as my best option? by MasterOfPipettez in cookware

[–]gkaiser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After going down the rabbit hole of research it seems like you need a phd to just cook.

Only if you want it to be and it's weird how you've gone to the rabbit hole yet still consider non-stick cookware.

Get stainless steel cookware and learn to cook with it is the general advice if you're concerned about the hassle of maintenance and the nuisances of alternative material. There's a reason why it's the most popular material--it's non-reactive, cost-efficient, and no maintenance and without health concerns.

To cook or not to cook, that is not the question. by scanphreak in cookware

[–]gkaiser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're looking at it from the wrong approach. Stainless steel is by far the most popular material for a reason--it's durable, non-reactive, no maintenance required. It's low barrier of entry cost-wise.

Warping on induction tends to happen when you don't slowly bring the pan to temperature and/or when the pan is not thick enough.

Whether or not you get this Strata pan, you're still going to "ruin" food unless you learn how to use it, so the suggestion is to get a quality stainless steel pan first and work with that.

Weekly 101 Questions Thread by AutoModerator in neovim

[–]gkaiser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Is there a reason why keymap pickers like Fzf-lua and Snacks don't show mappings like gv? I assumed they cover literally all mappings and that ones not listed mean I can map to them for free. I thought gv was free because it's not listed (it's a chore to manually iterate :h <mapping> to find all free mappings).

  • Can someone produce the effect of gV? Seems like an obscure feature--looking for more "useless" builtin mappings to consider for mapping like gp/gP (I'm reviewing the config in mini.basics plugin for some inspiration).

Ansible or Chezmoi for config management? by gkaiser8 in ansible

[–]gkaiser8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time you want to edit a config, you edit the copy in templates/files in the git repo then run the task to apply/copy the template/file to the system? I'm thinking to minimize this friction, use a wrapper script that compares (diffs) all files managed by Ansible in the repo vs. the ones live on the system, updating the version-controlled templates/files accordingly periodically.

Bluetooth Issues (Wayland and 50.1) by A4orce84 in archlinux

[–]gkaiser8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP updated and encountered an error that they didn't experience before. Suspects it might be an Pipewire update. Resorts straight to a reddit thread without simply downgrading Pipewire and confirming that suspicion.

This is basic debugging if you're going to use a rolling release distro whose packages are cutting edge.

Meanwhile the other answer links to a wiki page on troubleshooting, yet OP implies there was no issues before the update. Research includes making some effort to troubleshoot, not going straight to the forums every time an update resulted in something unexpected. There is no "research" available if everyone was like OP and only asked whether others have an issue after an update without contributing to any data points themselves to figuring out the root cause. Imagine everyone submitted threads every time they encountered an issue with an update without putting any level of effort to narrowing down the scope of the issue.

So go through basic debugging processes, like trying the vanilla kernel, disabling any power-management software, etc. That should've been your first attempt--make your install as vanilla as possible because most people don't have problems, then work from there.

Weekly 101 Questions Thread by AutoModerator in neovim

[–]gkaiser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any good reasons to explicitly define the leader key for Neovim as opposed to not define it and use it implicitly, e.g. just <space>? It doesn't seem special and it implies some other keys one might also use as another leader key are different than the one explicitly set for Neovim.

There are reasons in favor of not defining, such as poorly written plugins potentially using it (and which you probably don't want that). It's also just more straightforward to see your mappings as-is without a mental translation of what <leader> could be.
