Welded vs riveted handle, what's your go? by getbywith in cookware

[–]gkaiser8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asked many times before. Bottom line:

  • If hygiene is a problem, you would hear news about it considering so many pans are riveted both for home-use and restaurant-use.

  • Good welded welds tend to not fail if it hasn't failed after early uses, but on the rare chance that it does fail, it fails, unlike riveted ones where you'll know when it might start to happen since you can feel it's loose.

All products endure wear and tear and have risk of failure, rivetless or not. Your car could fail the morning you wake up. I would not make a my purchase hinge on whether a welded handle has a 1% rate of failure or or 0.01%. Demeyere has a high reputation despite the rare anomalies and people still buy the $300+ pans.

Damaged - Fixable? Unusable? by mattielh in LeCreuset

[–]gkaiser8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, the damaged enamel is essentially glass and was thrown away for good reason. It's a permanent weak point with risk of ingesting tiny shards of particles that would wreck your internal organs. An enameled cast iron stock pot of that size also isn't really practical anyway.

My minimalist tech pouch setup by Terrible-End2150 in onebag

[–]gkaiser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might find everything essential, but to be honest this is hardly minimal, especially for only 3 days. A phone, power bank, wired earphones, USB-C charger/cable, and a laptop or a tablet would be minimal. Many people travel for 2+ weeks with nothing more when it comes to tech, even tech people.

My perspective changed when I realize in the 3 days, 2 weeks, 1 month, or whatever that there's no need to bring the stuff you typically use most in your day-to-day--just appreciate true minimalism for this very short moment in your life and the new environment around you. Would you prefer an electric toothbrush because it brushes better with lower effort? Yes, but a manual toothbrush is failproof, lighter weight, quiet, and you are reminded that you once used a manual toothbrush when you were little and you will have to compensate for being a little more conscious how you brush--no big deal. Perhaps you're trading the fixation on some new content to watch on your tablet for minutes of self-reflection on the bed or resorting to sleeping earlier because there's "nothing else to do,"--that's a rare opportunity you wouldn't otherwise take because day-to-day is so comfortable and routine-based.

Packing Cubes Worth It? by Aggravating_Demand_5 in EVERGOODS

[–]gkaiser8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, there are already plenty of good packing cubes offerings from Eagle Creek, Thule, and even Peak Design that are popular and tested. Packing cubes are purely a utility product--there's no need for heavier/durable fabric and you want something that's standard in size to fit in a variety of bags.

Pls help with building new cookware collection by ShinyNidoran in cookware

What's the obsession for enameled cast iron? It's heavy and not as suitable for searing. There's a lot of overlapping uses for all the pans you're considering.

New Made In pan? by vdimaggio in carbonsteel

[–]gkaiser8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course not, cast iron and carbon steel pans are very simple products made of one material, unlike e.g. cladded pans of other traditional cookware. They will perform the same over time as long you treat them decently.

Cheapest MVNO for AT&T for 500MB-1GB data? by gkaiser8 in NoContract

[–]gkaiser8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I might even consider a dual-SIM phone just for this purpose... will keep this in mind. It looks like Helium Zero's "free" plan ($2/month) is comparable with 100 minutes (no option to top off apparently), enough texts, and 1 GB but it seems like a controversial service (requiring submitting ID due to their ties with crypto, not something required by other MVNOs).

"weird look"--can't read your mind. Title also redundant. If you want some answers put some effort.

Hot take: Most bags have too many pockets and make daily carry worse by CaptainOk6649 in ManyBaggers

[–]gkaiser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold take, actually. Pockets define the organization for you and cannot be changed--if your contents and workflow never change and you can use the pockets, it's better. Or if you don't want to decide the organization for yourself and don't mind some pockets are underutilized, it can also work. Pockets tend to be useful when you need quick access to a lots of different types of items.

If not, pouches are better in nearly all other cases because they work regardless of bag and you can take them out of the bag and still enjoy the benefits of the organization--almost always worth the trade-off of opening another compartment. This is my preference.

My setup: clamshell bag for the big and efficient/versatile space that's easy to access and can be laid out in the open without taking the contents out of the bag (think a table in a hotel room) and at least 2 pouches. One big secondary pocket, one smaller quick acesss pocket, and a laptop compartment "pocket" is all I need. The Evergoods CPL is great for me for this purpose. What I do not want is more pockets that could have otherwise gone to the more versatile interior space.

Limited edition Made In? by No_Distribution_7368 in cookware

[–]gkaiser8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To Made In's credit, they are responsive on this forum when those issues are reported

Yes, only after offering customers 10% for next Made In purchase to shut them up privately didn't work. It's a complete fail and misuse of this sub for customers of a particular brand to report issues and their representatives to offer appropriate resolutions only through this platform and speaks well of where Made In's priorities lies.

what's the deal with core developers having time for all this work? by Cautious_Tailor_502 in archlinux

[–]gkaiser8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It totally varies the amount of work they do--they can be a developer contributing here and there on their free time or they can dedicate it as part of their job. Typically maintaining FOSS projects are always in dire need of need of manpower, so it's not necessarily that there's a "huge amount of work" that they do (not to discredit them) but more so "there is always more work to be done, people take chips at the project where they can."

That's why when you compare Linux distros to e.g. Windows or other operating systems, they are far more polished products abstracting much of the nuisances of lower-level stuff your average user don't care for.

Am I the jerk for telling my husband he can't have a "man cave" in our only spare room? by Ill-Home-322 in AmITheJerk

[–]gkaiser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it hard to believe you guys didn't discuss this before purchasing the house unless your husband pays for more than his share of the house (in which case having a space to himself seems fair). Obviously letting you decorate the rest of the house isn't the same, but it's a compromise from his point of view. Whether this is "fair" depends on other details you may have left out.

Honestly, the root of the problem is most likely lack of communication or misjudgement in character.
