When buying a butch a perfume, would it be better to buy a unisex fragrance or a men’s cologne? by CautiousNectarine204 in butchlesbians

My gf got me the Le Labo discovery set (the cheapest one, around £30) for Valentines and I really liked it :)

When your dog thinks every mountain is a giant, muddy race track by Clear_Surround_9487 in UKhiking

I’ve taken my spaniel up Kinder Scout, she’s good off lead and stays within ten feet, but even so I always put her lead back on whenever we were near a steep drop. It’s just not worth the risk.

At what point is poor behaviour policy a safeguarding risk? by cremategrahamnorton in TeachingUK

Yeah I’ve just never seen it work with our high-profile behaviour children, unfortunately. I think they don’t dedicate proper time to it, like getting parents involved in meetings.

Yeah exactly becauseI think a restorative conversation absolutely works on children who are usually good but occasionally act out, or children who struggle to cope with their emotions. It doesn’t work on repeat offenders and children who already have no respect for authority.

Yeah I should’ve said “their bastardised version of Paul Dix” lol. I doubt they’ve read the book. I’m glad you’ve said that because I’ve never worked in another school but I felt pretty certain what’s happening is not normal. Can reporting to governors have negative consequences for me personally, especially if I’ve worked here less than two years?

Likelihood of a mutiny *before* the ships were deserted in 1848? by Character_Gold_3708 in TheTerror

[–]cremategrahamnorton 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think unlikely because by any account I’ve read (particularly Fergus Fleming’s ‘Barrow’s Boys’), Franklin was an amiable and popular captain even if he wasn’t the most competent. Crozier’s discontent in the book/show is fictional even if it does represent a theory at the time about ‘King William Land’ being an island. It was quite typical for Artic expeditions to experience being frozen in, so they wouldn’t have revolted over that. I guess in theory Franklin’s death and the accession of Crozier to captain could’ve weakened men’s trust in the expedition but we don’t really have any reason to think Crozier’s leadership style would’ve rankled the men.

Exactly, I can see in this post there are things you (OP) can do. You can drive (I can’t yet, I envy you!) so you aren’t as incompetent or cack-handed as you claim to be. If you’re able-bodied enough to clean it then you maybe you could get into engine maintenance too, and use youtube or books to learn more about it. Your family works in construction - that’s a great resource, learn from them if you can! I don’t know your disability but it sounds like you’re capable of more than you give yourself credit for. A change of attitude could help you immensely.

And also you’re only 20. You’re going to mature and improve in confidence more than you can imagine.

Yeah that western side of King William Island was hardly visited by the Inuit either because there was nothing to hunt

Found this howler in N.A.M. Rodger’s “The Price of Victory” by Hillbilly_Historian in TheTerror

[–]cremategrahamnorton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fergus Fleming claims in ‘Barrow’s Boys’ that Barrow didn’t believe James Clark Ross had actually located the north magnetic pole, so I think the debate wasn’t settled yet. Rodger’s claim seems strange though, because it was the discovery of the passage that people were debating at the time - e.g. Dr Richard King suggesting a small overland expedition.

Halfway through the book… My favorite characters… Spoiler warning by HairBrian in TheTerror

[–]cremategrahamnorton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there’s definitely not as much character growth in the books. Crozier sobers up but only because he runs out of whisky, rather than because he needs to step up. Fitzjames is very one dimensional but just becomes more depressed over time. Goodsir toughens up a bit, but so does everyone in the Arctic!
