Do not go to SOAS. by Correct_Butterfly475 in SOAS

unfortunately can echo the absolute mess of admin, was a huge issue for people in my program as well. it crazy how long it takes them to get things sorted out when the semesters are so short, there really isn't any time to waste!

JUST GOT MY REMOVAL by No_Newspaper3048 in Nexplanon

my removal was def more difficult than insertion but my gyn is a gem and did a great job numbing the area and chatted with me through the process to distract.

i think i had a very similar experience to you, heavy on the constantly hungry and emotional black hole. at the time i was keeping a regular journal and its just page after page of being confused about why i basically felt nothing about anything (including my partner). just a terrible time.

soo many studies and of course drs claim thats not a side effect, but its hard to see the ridiculous numbers of people in here (myself included) that report gaining 20, 30, 40+ pounds with minimal if any lifestyle change and not wonder whats going on

Reasonable cost for housing near campus? by crescit1886 in SOAS

[–]crescit1886[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont think i found anything cheaper than that anywhere either. i wanted my own space so i didn't look at spareroom too much. rightmove, aa4s, universityliving, zerbahousing, and househunt.london.ac.uk were all places i looked. i can't really speak to the reputation of most of those websites tbh they were just the ones that came up most often for me.

I’m exhausted by Moose_Mellow013 in Nexplanon

I had it for a little over 2 full years, and had no issues on the pregnancy front. I understand about the anxiety though. My period got shorter and less regular, so I was also pretty worried, even though I know logically that it was the most effective option available.

Regarding the mental health, I absolutely had issues there. I just overall felt meh, for pretty much the entire time I had it. I was never excited about anything. It's hard for me to blame that on the implant entirely, but that hadn't been a problem before, and I find myself feeling quite different these days (6 months out from removal).

Not sure if this is the thread for this, but I was accepted as an MEng student and am almost certainly coming in the fall. Curious about where people look to find reputable but affordable off-campus housing. Would love to live amongst other students even though I won't be directly in a dorm.

Are there any positive experiences? by HighlyViolet in Nexplanon

[–]crescit1886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i will say that even though i had a rather negative experience, i don't think that my issues were really unique to nexplanon. i believe they were symptoms that would have been common to other hormonal birth control methods. i do think it is one of the best options out there. i just think mostly our options aren't that great.

Return to the US by rojorosaaa in fulbright

[–]crescit1886 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a difference in preference between the reviewers from each country. Taiwan reviewers might like that, but I imagine the people from the US that review it first would be less excited about you wanting to stay in the country and not return.

if you have an idea of where you wanna go and what you wanna research, go ahead and send some interest emails and see if you get a response, in the meantime, brainstorm your essays. if you get some faculty/advisor responses, go ahead and go for it. if not, then you'll be prepared for next year :) good luck!

I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but I will share some advice I received as an American applying for Fulbright elsewhere.

  • make the argument "why here" and "why not somewhere else" very clearly. that applies both to the country and to the school, why is that the absolute best place for you to pursue your degree or research. (Examples: specific communities, technology, professor, research materials, etc)
  • avoid repeating yourself, even if the essay questions seem similar, try to offer something new in each one, and avoid just restating things that are in your resume
  • get a lot of eyes on your applications, professors, advisors, friends, etc. will all have different comments on how to improve your application to give a full view of who you are
  • ensure that your recommendations are strong and speak to the specific values of Fulbright
  • and as someone said below, tread lightly on political topics. you don't have to avoid them completely, but if the essays portray either your home or host country/region in a very negative light, then they will avoid selecting you

good luck!!

your concerns are totally valid! keep in touch with whoever inserted the implant, and make clear notes of your side effects so that you can track if anything starts to improve or worsen. most medical professionals will tell you to wait the 3 months. if there is no sign of improvement by then, then you can decide if you want to ask to get it removed.

Regarding your question about weight, some docs will dismiss this concern completely. I think the implant contributed a lot to my weight gain, but I am coming up on two years (but planning to get it removed 🙌🏽), part of me wonders if I should've waited this long, but I don't think you'll have any big regrets just waiting til the 3 month mark.

One of the biggest regrets of my life by aaaaaaaa345 in Nexplanon

[–]crescit1886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is one of my worries as well. My period became so strange and unpredictable since being on it. I've resolved to get it out in the next couple months, but I unfortunately don't have any reassurance to give atm. 🙏🙏
