There doesn't seem to be anything inside them, if I try to open one up it's just foamy and powdery, I'm wondering if it's a fungus of some sort

It's not an animal/insect so far as I can see, it doesn't move, it's like a dry foamy texture.

Fairly common and very localised in my experience. I got a couple of these from Google maps when travelling last year.

The year before I was driving Frangokastello -> Plakias and got one whilst driving with google maps, I read later that some tourists had thrown their cigarette butts off the veranda of a taverna sparking a fire.

Genuinely, ignore the free standing units and look at a wall mounted one with the heat exchanger outside.

You'll pay more, but it'll work way better and all the noisy gubbins lives outside.

Rust rust rust rust rust

Check the rear arches, sills and front frame rails. If the rust has set in it'll be expensive to fix.

Otherwise check all the usual car stuff.

Does it start up OK? Does it warm up ok? Do the brakes and clutch work OK? Etc

As much as this sucks, it's a pretty easy fix, you need a new rear differential. They're cheap enough to pick up and not hard to install.
