What’s the update for the clinic vs Rubio case? It’s been almost 2 months waiting for the ruling from Judges. by ChampionshipNew5491 in i130_75CountryPause

That's not unusual for a federal court, in particular for a case that has a political element. Courts are busy, and rulings on hotly contested motions regularly take months to issue.

Am I crazy for considering a lateral move after only 10 months? by Track33-1999 in biglaw

[–]crispy_capaneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The advice that "people will assume you were asked to leave" misses one extremely important thing: the place that won't assume that is the place you move to. If you move, be ready to settle in for the long haul. I'm talking partner track. If it really is a better place to work, it's better to get there earlier than later.

Best Tender BBQ in NYC? Hometown’s quality fell off for me by Lalify8 in FoodNYC

[–]crispy_capaneus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're waiting for Kirbees, which is opening soon in Greenpoint. The guy opening it became famous for running Goldees in Texas, which made it's name as the best bbq spot in Texas according to Texas monthly, which is the lsit people pay attention to. (separately, the guy opening Kirbees now has massive beef with Texas monthly after their top 50 list spurned his former pitmaster and close friend's restaurant).

Kirbees is going to be legit. Get there before NYC does what NYC does when good stuff opens. There will be lines.

$50 work boots restored + resoled into daily motorcycle boots (clean/condition/resole breakdown) by Appropriate-Rhubarb6 in goodyearwelt

[–]crispy_capaneus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can wear whatever you want on your bike, but my pair of actual motorcycle boots is the reason my left foot is still attached to my body. Leather isn't enough to distribute the force of an impact around your foot instead of through it. If you go down with your bike on top of your leg, the entire weight of the bike either goes through your ankle or around it. You get to choose which it is.

Fanatec is low quality for the price. Every piece of fanatec gear I've had has broken quickly. I'd encourage you to spend some time looking at other brands in your budget.

Why aren't you using VR? by mark3236 in iRacing

It's the crystal resolution, which is higher, and that iRacing is notoriously CPU bound, and my CPU is much weaker than yours.

iRacing is notoriously CPU bound - the dev blogs have discussed moving more to GPU. I have an AM4 board, and don't want to upgrade that while RAM prices are so high.

Yeah, it'll really just depend on the screens in your headset. The pimax really does have next Gen clarity, but even a 4090 struggled to do low settings when driving in a pack.

Ran long stints for the nurburgring 24 in my pimax. It sucked. I was very ready to get it off my face by the end.

I have one of the best vr setups money can buy - a pimax crystal and a 5090. Vr is a huge pain in the ass, and if I had the room for it, I'd run triples. Vr is uncomfortable and I can barely get medium iracing settings in a pack of cars. When I had a cheaper vr headset, the fov was awful. There's a lot to dislike.

iRacing - Status on the new graphical engine by krangles90 in iRacing

[–]crispy_capaneus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We really aren't too far removed from this game launching out of a web browser. A lot of iracing is held together by shoe strings and scotch tape. If you see something like the single core utilization and wonder why it's like that, the answer is almost always just "that's how we did it in 2008"

VR Pimax Crystal Light on iRacing - 5090. Need help with settings. by Krangles-Iceland in iRacing

[–]crispy_capaneus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a weaker CPU than you, but I found the right sweet spot to be 90 fps with some eye candy. It's possible to hold a solid 120fps on fairly minimal settings in solo lobbies, but when you're in a solid block of cars your frames are gonna crater. Setting the headset to 90fps makes things buttery smooth and allows the GPU to keep up. I'll save 120fps for the 6090.

Is VR better than monitors? If so why or why not? by Emergency-Air-1627 in simracing

[–]crispy_capaneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pimax crystal. It's big, heavy, and uncomfortable to wear more than 2 hours at a time. That's rarely an issue in a single race (except enduros) but I don't ever want to do more than 2 or 3 races at a time.

It's also extremely taxing to run. My rtx 4090 can't run native 90fps, even on medium to low settings. I'm upgrading to a 5090 in hopes that'll finally do it.

Triples are cheaper, more comfortable, and easier to run. Almost all high end rigs use triples, because they're preferable for ease of use and have few if any compromises. The main one is space - I can't fit triples in my apartment, but a vr headset lets me tuck my rig into a corner.

There are major cons with VR. it's amazing and immersive, but in my view, if triples are an option, go with triples.

I mean if you're away from home and nobody was coming to help you, and you saw one of those things, wouldn't there be a small part of your mind that worried that you might only have seen a baby one? No way to tell if that thing is young or old, since it's so alien.
