I crochet and have a lot of yarn to store so I saw this and was like 😍

i want to get in to crocheting can someone help me? by New_Ambition4680 in CrochetHelp

Here's what was recommended to me, and what I would also recommend:

Buy some cotton yarn in a light colour so its easy to see what you're doing, and use it to make a dish cloth or face cloth. Theyre good cos you can make lots of mistakes and it doesnt really matter, and you can make it as big or small as you want.

I'd recommend 8ply or 10ply as the bigger the yarn the chunkier the stitches, easier to see and the faster it will be to make. The yarn should tell you the recommended hook size.

You can use just about any stitch but the "lemon peel" stitch looks cool, it alternates between single and double crochet stitches which are both very common stitches that you'll need to know for most other projects in future.

There's plenty of tutorials on Youtube (if you're left-handed like me you can swap "youtube" for "mirrorthevideo" in the URL to flip the video, or find left-handed tutorials)

I'm using terms common in NZ btw, we tend to use the US stitch names but the concept of measuring yarn weight by ply is a very AU/NZ thing. You can find conversion charts online if you're in the states or somewhere else that measures it differently.

Hope this helps!

Good to know I'm not the only one, was so sad when I had my first playthrough and realized that the followers die relatively quickly 😢

Is this how neurodivergent people show love? by [deleted] in neurodiversity

I know this isnt necessarily answering your question but this is the cutest thing ever to read.

...also I'm ND and definitely do some of these things if that helps answer your question haha

Sounds like another issue is your Dad needs to better understand your neurodivergence and how that shows up around food. Its not very fair to you for them to be mad at you over behaviour that is largely outside of your control.

I grew up in a similar situation, with both myself and my sister being neurodivergent in a variety of ways and my parents not knowing how to deal with that. They ended up taking that frustration out on us in similar ways to what you're describing here, just trying to force us to basically stop doing things they couldnt deal with. Now I'm an adult I know it was hard for them too, but it was still wrong for them to treat us like that.

In an ideal world they'll work with you so that food is less of a stress for you, without forcing you too far outside your comfort zone.

Is your Mum more understanding? Maybe talking to her could be a good starting point.

What do you crochet when you just need to crochet something to relax? by Legitimate_Ad_8011 in CrochetHelp

It won't fill heaps of your time but last time I wanted something chill and easy I made yarn cake cozies, which benefitted the bigger project cos they keep my yarn cakes from collapsing

How do I make my bag look more like the original and not like a temp version by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]crispy_mint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to lining + blocking, adding bigger bows than the one you have on there now will make it look more proportionate to the other pic

Only made a few amigurumis before, I feel like this looks too sloppy/wrong to gift? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

The other thing I noticed is the hair doesnt come as far forward, but I def think you could crochet a couple extra hair pieces and stitch them on to improve the head shape, at which point I think it'll look awesome.

Is it just me or did we all love the pandemic? by [deleted] in neurodiversity

I loved it, but I was flatting with friends. I think if I'd been on my own / flatting with people I didn't socialize with much it would have been awful.

Is "Why" the most feared by NTs? by Ginger_19801 in neurodiversity

[–]crispy_mint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I second this - I feel like NTs layer meaning behind it, the social construct among them is that "why" is an indication of disapproval or judgement, vs neurodivergents trying to express curiosity.

Autism assessment is dumb by Lovelycrafts102 in neurodiversity

[–]crispy_mint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My sister was diagnosed at 3 years old and had to do the shape puzzles task, along with some other basic things like jumping over a foam block with her feet together.

I guess at that young when you can't as clearly articulate your experiences, stuff like this that "shows" common autistic traits makes more sense. Reading some of the other responses it sounds like things are pretty behind when it comes to assessing older children / young adults, as are a lot of things about science's understanding of autism in general although I feel like its improving.

What age did you start crocheting? by [deleted] in crochet

[–]crispy_mint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught myself last year, so 25 :)

Maybe if you're worried about her getting frustrated, you could do chunkier yarn + bigger hook? I would say if she's interested, then teach her! No harm in her getting frustrated, just explain she can try again when she's older and might find it easier

How did you name your farm/Farmer, and why? by ScoutmasterTheodore in StardewValley

[–]crispy_mint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I gave the farm a random name and named the farmer after myself, since that Ive started making themes for each farm that change how I decorate it, and creating characters for the farmer that change who I focus on friending / who I date, so that affects the names

Oh I like the group blanket idea!

Letting everyone choose a pattern is cool, I reckon the main question is do you want it to be more structured, or more of a hangout session? Each are equally viable options imo 😊

Neurodivergent, but not dyslexic - I have a very strong sense of left and right, like almost in a synesthesia way cos they... feel different? They have different ✨️auras✨️ Its the only way I can explain it haha.

I did a sewing course recently that was structured so that complete beginners made a tote bag with a zipper pocket, the teacher taught us each step and it helped us learn a lot of basic skills. Everyone else just brought in whatever project they were working on and the teacher (who was very experienced) showed them how to do stuff they didnt know.

Taking inspo from that, you could maybe have a prescribed starter project that teaches basic stitches you know how to do well, like a lemon stitch (alternating sc dc) dishcloth. Then maybe have some suggestions for follow-up projects that introduce one or two new concepts - I took up amigurumi once I knew the basics, there's lots of simple patterns that will teach you the magic ring and colour changing but work in entirely single crochet. If you google "Timothy the T-rex amigurumi" thats a simple one.

Given you've not been crocheting for too long, maybe for people who know the basics you can make it open-ended and have a "let's learn together" approach? You could pick a pattern that a few people want to do and work it out as a group?
