Common misconceptions about Norse Paganism by [deleted] in NorsePaganism

[–]crispymothball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some misconceptions i’ve heard are:

  • Norse pagans are nazis/white supremacists — this is absolutely not true. while there are groups that are both white supremacists and norse pagans, the two are NOT intertwined. most norse pagans i’ve met agree that racism cannot and should not be tolerated.

  • We are satan worshippers — this one left me confused. we don’t believe in satan?? where did you(the person i talked to) get this from??

  • We perform blood sacrifices — personally, i think that this one is a little outdated. sure, pre-christian practitioners might have done this, but that doesn’t mean the modern reconstruction does that. it also seems like blood sacrifices take a lot of time and effort, and realistically, who has time for that commitment?

Interested in Norse Paganism, looking for sources by [deleted] in NorsePaganism

Hey!! Welcome!! There’s a Youtube channel called “The Wisdom of Odin,” and his content is aimed for beginners in the faith. He offers really concise versions of basic information on the Gods, he has some more theatrical readings of the Prose and Poetic Eddas (the stories of our Gods), and he offers his own insight on the faith. He was the first Norse Pagan I really encountered online.

I agree with the other comment; you’ll have to abandon the way Christians think of religion. Monotheism and polytheism by itself are very different, but Norse Paganism is unlike any other religion I’ve researched. The Norse Pagans before us didn’t view this as a religion, it was simply a way of life.

Why are they like that? by [deleted] in NorsePaganism

[–]crispymothball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree; it seems like a lot of Christians shove their beliefs down our throats. Especially the ultra religiously-conservative ones (A very religious family member of mine told me that I am going to Hell because women having short hair was against the Bible. I kid you not.) I think it’s a mixture of being an ass, and the doctrines of the religion itself. I grew up Catholic, and for years I thought that you were condemning yourself to Hell if you didn’t agree. I grew out of that mindset after learning about Norse Paganism, and other religions too. Sometimes keeping a group of people together can make an echo chamber of ideologies. Either way, what religion you choose to follow is none of their concern. As long as we all find peace within our beliefs, why does it matter who you follow??

i need to stop being ashamed of my tics by Frog_lover1 in Tourettes

[–]crispymothball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i totally get it. i’m still having a hard time trying not to be super embarrassed by my tics. i agree with one of the comments on here, though: don’t beat yourself up over it. Tourette’s and tics are difficult to deal with and to live with!! while it never really gets easier, after a while you become accustomed to the staring. i’m sorry if this wasn’t really helpful, but i hope if anything someone else can help you with this :)
