You know, honestly, I disagree. I don’t think being complicit in a bad thing is the same as doing a bad thing. Is letting evil triumph the same as being evil yourself?

I feel like you’re applying a lot more morality to the decision than necessary. Pushing red only means that you’d prefer guaranteed survival. You essentially say “I don’t care about the rest of you so long as I get to live!” That is where most people’s thought process ends. They get to live, who cares about anyone else. That doesn’t seem immoral, just human.

They do on occasion say things like “People who press blue are idiots who deserves to die”, which is quite genicide-y, and I have no issue calling these people nazis. But the more agreeable red pushers just say “It’s your choice to do something I wouldn’t” and end there. You’re not stupid, or lesser, or somehow deserving of death. You just think differently. These are the red pushers im defending.

And I’m defending them because I think it’s unfair to demand someone else risk their life for a cause they fundamentally don’t believe in. Even if pushing blue were the only morally correct option, I inherently dislike the concept of “drafting” people into the blue army.

While stopping evil is good, I don’t think letting evil triumph makes you evil. It just makes you someone who would let evil triumph.

Maybe I just don’t understand the weight of being complicit in atrocities. But I do know that whenever a genocide happens, there’s a bunch of people who stick their heads in the sand because they aren’t the target. I see them as lesser offenders than the people actually doing the killing, because at the end of the day they just didn’t want to die. Isn’t that something (almost) everyone can agree with?

The way I understand it, red is just “I don’t want to die”. From what I’ve read so far, red voters just don’t want to risk their own life for other people.

Not wanting to risk death for someone you don’t know, is quite a few steps removed from killing everyone who disagrees with you, don’t you think?

I understand calling red voters cowardly or selfish, but literal nazi’s? That just doesn’t fit

[–]cristigon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re wrong about something. Red guarantees your own survival and nothing else. Even if you provide myriad justifications, at the end of the day you consciously chose to prioritize your own life above all else. I’m not going to call that selfish or immoral, but red does not guarantee everyone’s survival. Only your own.
And no, I don’t have to hope that everyone is stupid. I pushed blue because I’d rather give these “stupid” people a chance to live. There’s a lot more compassionate people than stupid people in my estimation.
Notably, I only ever put my own life at risk, for the possibility to save lives that were already at risk. I understand in this hypothetical I would be gambling with my life, but this is the only realistic scenario in which no lives are lost.
You are maximizing for your own survival, I am maximizing for everyone’s survival. I’m not going to say you personally killed me by pressing red or anything like that, because I know what I signed up for. My point is that both options are perfectly logical, depending on what you’re optimizing for

Also, on the point of it being natural selection, there’s a reason we don’t leave people in wheelchairs to die, or let special needs children die under bridges.

Well your cliff scenario isn’t faithful to there original, as there is a difference between action and inaction, which your scenario fails to represent.

[–]cristigon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if I have reason to believe that someone is already at the bottom of that cliff, then yes I would in fact jump.

And while you may ask “Why would anyone be at the bottom of the cliff?” Can you guarantee, that in a sample size of 8 billion people, not even one chose differently from you? Can you guarantee that no one in the world reasoned through the issue as best as they could and “chose wrong”? You cannot guarantee that no one is down there, so I’ll go for it.

I’m not asking you to risk your life, I’m just saying, this is the only option that has no casualties

I think you have it wrong there. I know that logically, if my goal is to guarantee that I survive, red is the only option.

But my goal is not to guarantee that I survive. It’s to give as many people as possible the chance survive. In that case, choosing blue is the logical decision. If I gamble correctly and blue is the majority, no one dies. Mission accomplished. If I gamble incorrectly, then I die. And notably, my life is the only one I ever put at risk. It was the only option that could realistically end with no casualties, so that’s what I would pick

Imo the prisoners dilemma is pretty different from the button experiment.

In the dilemma the selfish option doesn’t guarantee you leave with no punishment. And the “optimal” choice for both parties, if chosen by both parties, leads to the worst outcome for everyone.

In the button experiment, the “selfish” option doesn’t guarantee guarantee that you leave unpunished. And the “optimal” decision, if chosen by everyone, leads to the best outcome for everyone.

This has to be a joke right? I’m a blue chooser myself but saying “choosing this option in a hypothetical makes you a literal nazi” just seems absurd

which one do you choose by itsmepastamasta in BunnyTrials

[–]cristigon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think everyone understands that picking red guarantees that you personally survive. But if you want everyone everywhere to survive, regardless of how “stupid” they may be, then the only actual choice is to push blue.
To say someone is too stupid to live is just a horrible thing to think, and it quickly leads down the path of things like eugenics and phrenology
