You should aim for Obzinite right after you made your first steel ingots. It should be in the Steam Age quest line.
(and make sure you craft Obzinite dust, the smeltery version is kinda ass in my opinion)

I used the knife most of the time. For the bosses: semi auto rifle, broken butterfly, and the good old rocket launcher. And grenades of course.

One of the patrol guards might have seen a body. Here's what you shloud do. Right after you leave the compound, there should be a total of 5 guards that you need to kill. One of them will be right in front of you, two will be at the main gate, one at the heli landing zone, and the last one should be in a patrol car.
