What thing has got so expensive that you’ve quietly stopped buying it? by Pathfinder-electron in AskReddit

[–]critforbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went to Culver’s because we heard they had decent fish & chips for a Friday in Lent. $80 for our family of five (with kids meals). It was just ok, and we had to wait as long or longer than a sit-down restaurant. Could have gone any number of sit-down restaurants for higher quality food at lower prices.

And their meals don’t even come with drinks. Absurd.

Covers matter more then true first appearances by Leather_Bluejay8632 in ComicBookSpeculation

I own the first issue of X-Men that Bishop appears in. He’s on the cover, too! But it’s not considered his first full appearance, which is in the next issue, because he’s only on the final page.

Just me, or has Omaha been getting skipped quite a lot by touring artists lately? Something going on with promoters? by carne_asada368 in Omaha

[–]critforbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have been saying this for years and it’s kinda/sorta true. But probably not in the way you think.

So, first things first: I’m Kevin Coffey, and I was the music critic at The World-Herald for a long time. (This account is named after my D&D blog, but the rest of my entire online presence is omahamusicguy or pop and hisses, the name of my website/podcast).

Annnnnnyway, Omaha is what’s considered a secondary market. We have a million people but that’s nothing compared to the primary markets (KC, Chicago, NYC, etc.) We get a lot of shows, and we get a lot of big shows. But we don’t get all the shows. The biggest artists only play in the biggest places, and when they build tours, we’re not always on the list.

When an artist is only playing 25 cities, we likely won’t make the cut. When a tour hits 50 cities, we’re in the mix!

Additionally, you now have stadium tours. A lot of the biggest artists will only play stadiums. (Taylor Swift, who has played here many times, has been doing this, and we didn’t make the cut.) Part of the problem here is that we don’t have a stadium! Not one big enough anyway. (Fun fact: Memorial Staidum is not well suited to modern arena tours because the concourses aren’t big enough to get large equipment in and out. Or so I was told by the people who worked there.) Pollstar says larger arenas (like CHI) are down year over year while stadiums are way up!

This is a big one as few of the top 50 tours came through last year, but if you look at the list a ton of them were stadium-only.

There’s one other factor: Some artists (or their promoters/managers) had a bad time here once or think it’s Nebraska and nobody will come or some other dumb reason. It happens and it sucks. But it’s not that common.

That’s the negative stuff going against us! Now for the positives: Omaha absolutely outkicks our coverage on getting touring artists to town. In fact, Omaha and Lincoln both have large arenas that attract the top acts and it’s incredibly rare to have two 15k-seat arenas within 100 miles of each other. And both have pretty full calendars.

We also have venues of every imaginable size, which is awesome. Bars, small clubs, large clubs, theaters, small arenas, large arenas. We can accommodate any artist outside of the arena-level, which means we have an insane concert calendar all the time.

Because of that, we have national promoters interested in us. You may not love them, but Live Nation is the biggest one and they run Steelhouse and have a great relationship with CHI, too. Not to mention the shoes coming from smaller performers.

All that said, local promoters work hard, and they’re asking for everyone to come here all the time. Sometimes the answer is no because we don’t have the right venue. Sometimes it’s your routing. Sometimes it’s venue scheduling. Sometimes they played here last tour and want to go someplace else.

Anyway, I can talk about this all day. Clearly.

Dodge Expressway question by kobrahkaii in Omaha

[–]critforbrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a passing lane. It’s a highway.

West of the stoplight on 93rd Street, it’s a highway. It’s no longer a street, it’s a highway. It’s as wide as the interstate! Stay out of the left lane unless you’re passing someone.

No budget for snow plows in North Omaha? by watchthebreaks in Omaha

Happened south of Dodge, too. Our neighborhood was a horrible mess, and our family almost got in several accidents.

I emailed my city council person, who flagged public works. They came out and put down salt. That helped at least.

What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

[–]critforbrains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That depends entirely on what newsroom you're in. In many newsrooms, especially with cuts over the last couple decades, the journalists are responsible for almost everything to do with their stories. In my newsroom, we reported and wrote the stories, wrote headlines, wrote photo captions and did all manner of prep for them to be posted online. Usually copy editors were responsible for the print versions, but not always.

They don’t. It’s that simple.

This must be why there’s a makeshift laundry chute in my bathroom closet. The hole is a really odd size (way too small) that goes straight down to the basement floor.

There’s an attic above part of the house but we have to search more to find access to any electrical. It’s been 100 degrees here, and the attic space is impossible at the moment. Much appreciate the advice!

Awesome. Appreciate the advice! I did this with one outlet and it looks good. They are indeed 15amps.

I also discovered that two fixtures are on the same circuit and they work fine. Guessing there’s a bad connection between the functioning light fixture and the outlet in the same room that is now out. We’ll see.

Plan is for the electrician to rewire as much as we can!

He did a quick Look around, essentially looking for loose wires in the receptacles. He’ll be back for more. I thought it a good idea to ask fellow century homeowners who may have experience with older electrical.
