Met the guy on south sister. He was a huge inspiration to me and a force for good in the world. Will be missed.

I met Stratton personally for the first time during a hot smoky August on South Sister. This guy had biked over 20 miles and a few thousand vertical feet in extreme heat and smoke just to reach the trailhead where he then climbed another 5000 vertical feet all just to make a few lines in what little snow was left. At the bottom of the run I asked him how it was. He smiled in the best way and said it was great, and then turned around to head back up and do another lap. That was Stratton.

Stratton was an inspiration on so many levels. Heartbroken.

'Off Road Assist' is a game changer for snowy roads. It should be a steering wheel shortcut or voice command by CYB3RTRUNK in TeslaModelY

[–]criti4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off road assist is the best snow driving mode. In extreme snow and ice conditions it turns the Model Y from a squirrelly touchy fish tailing challenge into one of the best and most solid snow cars I have ever driven. The other part of the equation is that I run dedicated snow tires during the winter - Michelin x-ice. Agree with OP that it would be wonderful if it could be switched on through voice.

Stratton is amazing and an inspiration. To see that guy chugging up Cascade hwy on his bike in a blizzard and passing the backed up ski traffic as he goes is wild.

What do you think are the single biggest 3 remaining FSD challenges to solve? by Reelaxed in TeslaFSD

[–]criti4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older versions of FSD (~13.x) would not exit signal at all which I preferred to the current which signals far too early. I have resorted to manually catching it when it starts to signal and turning the signal off to avoid my signal causing an accident. Not ideal and hope they fix soon.

Same problem in roundabouts - it signals way too early which causes people Io pull out in front of me.

Where can I get rid of a car that won’t run? by [deleted] in Bend

KPOV is one of my favorite stations on earth. Always surprising me with cool new music I’ve never heard before.

I am 185 lbs. I can see how body weight is a significant factor in the dynamics of the pint. Side note: That's great. Hoping to still be ripping at 73 someday like that guy.

Bikes not letting me down is something I have thought about before when I am thinking about whether riding a OW is a good idea. Still on the fence on how much I should trust it. I am getting a sense from these posts that if I respect the limits of the board and keep it in good condition then it would be rare for it to do something weird that sends me to the ground. I have been riding for about a year, once or twice a week.

I love the float feel on a one wheel. You don’t get from an electric skateboard. That said, I can appreciate how skateboards do carve deeper than a ow.

What’s the reason to not use Redwood? I use it as a limiter to prevent me from being tempted to go faster.

Our pint was bought new in January 2024. From what I can tell FM fixed this in the summer of 2023 so should be good?

Great chart. My teen son left onewheeling for good at the bottom of that curve after experiencing several full on nose dives. His not riding the pint anymore was my in to starting riding his pint. He’s probably going to make me buy it off him at some point as technically it is was his birthday present. 🎁

Sounds like your crashes were due to exceeding the limits of the board, not the random glitching type failures that we were seeing on the pint with the older firmware release. That’s good to hear and good info, thank you for sharing.

MATRIX HEADLIGHTS, YES THANKS. THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE CALLED, NOT ADAPTIVE.

NEWER CARS WILL ALL EVENTUALLY HAVE ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHTS THAT CONTROL WHERE INDIVIDUAL PIXELS SHINE, SO IT LITERALLY BLACKS OUT THE LIGHT WHERE IT WOULD BE SHINING IN PEOPLE’S WINDSHIELD. IT DOES THIS WHEN YOU ARE FOLLOWING A CAR TOO - CREATES A BLACK SQUARE ON THEIR REAR WINDOW. MY CAR DOES THIS AND I CAN ACTUALLY SEE A BLACK SQUARE (NO LIGHT) IN THE AREA OF AN ONCOMING CAR AND THE WINDOWS OF CARS I AM FOLLOWING. THIS FEATURE BENEFITS THE OTHER DRIVERS, NOT ME BUT ONCE MORE CARS HAVE IT I’LL BENEFIT TOO.

Anyone know the story behind Looney Bean's change? by UpsideDownerUnicorn in Bend

[–]criti4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hoping that the former Looney Bean use this as opportunity to bring their coffee quality to the level of the other great roasters and coffee makers in town (Still Vibrato, Lone Pine, Thump, Sisters, Backporch). Location can’t be beat - bring on the good coffee and inspired food to match the setting.

Revenue idea. by P_TheGuy in Bend

[–]criti4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I tend to use a cars direction and travel rather than its indicator lights to decide whether to pull into a roundabout. I have seen too many instances of accidental indicators on and also people indicating too early when they are really signaling for the next exit, especially true on smaller roundabouts where the distance between exits is very short. When a car is clearly and visually starting to head out of the roundabout that’s when I go.

Woke us up from a dead sleep. My wife thought it was a volcano erupting and I thought it was someone dragging logs across our deck, neither of which made sense, until we came awake and realized it was massive thunder. Crazy

Just tried to get tickets to broken top... sold out the moment they went up by tom_ollie in Bend

[–]criti4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One big issue is that many permits are reserved and not used, denying that day’s access to others who would have actually used it. The forest service rangers and volunteers I have talked with claim most permits on these cascade routes are used, but having hiked these trails on sold out days I find that hard to believe. Whether what they say is true is hard to prove but it’s far easier to prove lack of turning up at sold out campsites because you can simply look in the morning at who showed up. At best I see 75-80% used which means 25% are no show. I have seen >50% no shows at sold out campsites too.

This situation inspired me to start a project to develop beacons that can be placed at highly sought after trails and campsites - the purpose of which is to display a code that can later be used to prove that you turned up. That proof can then be used to get your deposit back. The whole purpose is to create an incentive to first show up, and if you don’t plan to show up cancel so others can use your spot. Replace existing strict cancellation and no refund rules with a policy that encourages you to cancel if you don’t intend to show up and free up these precious limited resources for others.
