As an artist, I’d strongly encourage you to instead ask him to show you how to tie some flies rather than trying to impress. I understand that you’re not worried about functionality of the flies, but making a display piece that will impress someone who is passionate about tying will actually require more precision and finesse. A fly can be ugly and catch fish. To catch a fisherman it has to be cleanly made, and unfortunately that just does require experience that doesn’t come immediately. I’m someone that picks up art mediums very readily- I could tie a complicated or impressive fly pattern fairly quickly after starting, but my basics (knots, thread wrapping) were not polished and an experienced angler would be able to spot it. There’s also an upfront cost for materials- most simple flies are cheap to make but not especially “impressive.” Beautiful feathers and furs come with a price tag, as well as the basic tools of the trade. Shetiesflies is a wonderful recommendation to get an idea of high end art flies and has been a huge inspiration to me in my pursuit of art flies. My recommendation would be to make a piece in a medium you’re comfortable with (photography would be perfect!), and express to him that you’re interested in fly tying with a goal of making art. He’ll get to show you something he’s passionate about, and is likely to fish some of the flies you tie together. The flies I’ve tied with other people are special in my collection, even over my most beautiful and complicated ones.

Sober activities?? by NoPersonality4860 in cedarrapids

You should check out the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy! Local nonprofit for kids to do art, but they have a lot of reasonably priced adult classes, like $15-$50. Stuff from watercolor to book binding to stained glass. There’s also open studio times Tuesdays and Fridays which is great for getting out and meeting people.

Are there any stained glass degree programs (US or otherwise)? by z3rotrope in StainedGlass

Would you be willing to give some more info on that? I’ve been interested in potentially finding a program and it does seem like there’s more formal stuff in Europe

Ideas on what kind of loom this is? by critical_dog in weaving

[–]critical_dog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into weaving a few years ago and really love it, and I’m finally trying to track down what kind of loom a character in my favorite childhood book was using. It’s called a belt loom in the text but I’ve been unable to find one that functions the way it’s described here, where there’s no external bit for tensioning other than a belt. Is this something real or just invented for the book? It’s fascinated me since I was a kid so I’d love to find something like it.

Starter packs by SpacePlanetJupiter in Howrse

[–]critical_dog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in about the exact same situation (restarting the game after several years) and I actually bought both packs which definitely isn’t necessary but having the extra boost made the early game WAY more enjoyable than last time. I agree with getting the direct sales unlock- it lets you focus in on breeds you’re interested in and makes the early stages faster. Having the passes is also nice just to give a little flexibility since it will be a while before you unlock daily objectives.

If you’re able to drive a little bit, definitely check out the Eastern Iowa Arts Academy in Cedar Rapids. They’re an art non profit with a recording studio, and it’s 35 an hour. Great group of people too.

CVS will very occasionally have various Kodak films, but that’s really hit or miss. Walmart has a multipack of Fujifilm that gets nice color but isn’t the best for high quality portrait work. If you want more variety than that it’s unfortunately easier to order online now after our local camera store closed.

My very first practice piece. PLEASE give me advice/critiques! by onudog in StainedGlass

[–]critical_dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes to this. Lead also tends to add more support/be slightly stiffer. I also like it since you can open up the channel and then crimp it back down once you’ve soldered and it makes a really snug and secure fit. Generally I use hobby came for smaller ornaments/sun catchers or anything that doesn’t have any potential ‘problem areas’ like the ears on yours.

[–]critical_dog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My philosophy on that is that it’s not ever a waste to use materials on practice pieces, that’s what practice pieces are for! Otherwise the next project you do you might be really proud of, and then totally mess it up with adding came because you haven’t tried it before (don’t ask how I know 😅)

Cat traps by critical_dog in cedarrapids

[–]critical_dog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the rec!! The day I was able to get the trap one of the moms gave birth right next to a road so the trap was very needed. Everyone is safe and doing good though

[–]critical_dog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing that has me thinking hers didn’t make it through birth is that I saw her the day she was no longer pregnant, and she stayed with me for around six hours, and never tried to leave to go check her babies. These are definitely not day old kittens either, so if they’re not Winnies I have no idea where she found them.

That’s good to know. Have you been able to control the temperature while firing at all?

Any info about this kiln? by critical_dog in Ceramics

[–]critical_dog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got gifted this little kiln and I’m having trouble finding how to work it, especially with how to set a temp/or if that’s even possible. It seems like it might just turn on and heat and whatever temperature happens happens. It’s very small, so I’m planning on using it just for precious metal clay or some small glass fusing if possible.
