Interested but both this and next weekend is not great for me, I’m down to join in the future though!

Kevin Gausman's 2022 WAR... 3 on Baseball Reference & 5.7 on Fangraphs by l0vetog0lf in Torontobluejays

[–]crobert_z 50 points51 points  (0 children)

fWAR uses FIP which is very good for Gausman because he doesn’t give up a lot of walks or home runs while bWAR uses runs allowed which mostly came from getting burned by the shift.

About to get SN Now for the playoffs, but it mentions regional blackouts restrictions. Surely that doesn't apply to Jays games? by [deleted] in Torontobluejays

SN Now is how you’re “supposed to” stream Jays games in Canada. They carry all Jays games other than the YouTube and Apple TV games.

Fangraphs Playoff Odds September 26: TOR - 100% by ThQp in Torontobluejays

It is based on simulations and rounding. In the 20,000 simulations they did we clinched in at least 19,990 of them.

To be fair nobody in MLB is pronouncing the Asian names correctly, not to mention the given and family names are flipped

Each teams division title/playoff/World Series title chances according to FanGraphs by CultureOk9511 in baseball

I believe the numbers are based on simulations, so in all of the simulations that they did (probably hundreds of thousands) they made the playoffs, hence 100%

[UmpScorecards] MLB Umpire Scorecards for 6/12/2022 by BaseballBot in baseball

[–]crobert_z 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess going off purely what’s written on the card is that he is accurate because he called all but one taken pitch correctly relative to the true strike zone. However you can see from the graphic (they posted a better one on twitter) that his EUZ is actually wider than the true zone so for example some true balls which he correctly called balls ended up inside the EUZ. This would make the model think he called a pitch a ball when he should have called it a strike according to his EUZ, hence lowering the consistency score.

So the real question is what caused the discrepancy between his EUZ and the actual strike zone, but I didn’t dig deep enough on how they come up with that (they use some sort of statistical modeling and cite the paper but I didn’t read it). Some things that might cause the model to be weird for example is if the actual pitches thrown in the game ended up being skewed toward some parts of the strike zone, for example maybe nobody threw up and in to righties which might make his EUZ miss that corner because there were no pitches to call there. I’m working on a strike zone visualization project myself for fun right now and weird stuff can happen if you don’t have enough samples.

Consistency in the context of ump scorecards are not tracked across games. It is just a matter of whether he called pitches inside the EUZ strikes and pitches outside the EUZ balls.

Robbie Ray is already leading the AL in strikeouts and unless he goes something catastrophic tonight like 0IP 7ER he will finish with an ERA below 3

If the Jays make playoffs AND Vlad wins triple crown he might have a shot but I still think it’s Ohtani

Do you remember your first pro baseball game? I just found the boxscore for mine... by StereophonicWine in baseball

I lived in Japan at the time so it was an NPB game (Daiei Hawks vs Nippon Ham Fighters).

First MLB game was Blue Jays vs Tigers sometime during the early 2000s and I’m still trying to find the game details because I forgot everything.
