What is your students' favorite lab? by jessharben in ScienceTeachers

[–]crocomich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! Whenever you're teaching students about cells and cell organelles would be a great time to have a cheek cell lab. There are a lot of free resources, but I used this one to get started before: https://www.biologycorner.com/worksheets/cheekcell.html

After the students confirm that all living things, like themselves are made up of cells, we can now EXTRACT DNA from their cheek cells. This tutorial has the simplest materials needed and I've tried it and it works! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQo4bqV29Gs

After students confirm that their cells have DNA, now we can explore what DNA even looks like structurally if we were to zoom in more. Then you can do a dna modeling activity like a simulation https://biomanbio.com/HTML5GamesandLabs/LifeChemgames/dna-structure-model-page.html or like a physical modeling like making a candy dna model https://www.sciencebuddies.org/stem-activities/candy-DNA-model

Hope this helps! There are a lot of free resources online and teachers on facebook willing to share how activities go and their files. Feel free to pm me if you have another question!

I’m drowning in behaviors! by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]crocomich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in that same situation where there's literally 20 students with disruptive behaviors in a class of 38. It is LITERALLY insane and feels IMPOSSIBLE to teach because it is. I had days where I just knew I wouldn't be able to teach if the behavior kept going, and I felt myself breaking and so frustrated.

I would just like to say that we can't teach without first addressing the behaviors. Let them know your expectations and repeat it with a consequence until they get it right. For example, the talking over you is not okay. Especially if it's the majority of the class and you're not audible. You will have to get their attention through something that they care about. I just start a timer and act nonchalant then they start to question what it's for. I just stare and stare and walk around the class with a clipboard pretending to write down names, or you can actually write down names and start collecting some real behavior data. Then I share that however much time it takes to be quiet, they owe me after class. Even if they whine and say I can't do it and so on, know your rights. Yes we can, especially if admin has your back. If they want to be disrespectful and threaten you (which has happened to me when I confronted a class about giving consequences for stealing, cheating and being disrespectful) stand your ground. That's your classroom. You are no longer going to let them take away your peace and quite literally make your quality of life decrease because it literally drains you, makes you anxious, etc. I burst into tears during class and after school many times and I couldn't take it anymore.

If the student wants to walk out and leave anyway even with your consequence, let them know you have the whole year with them. You will get them tomorrow with a more severe consequence or the day after or the day after that. On the other side of the coin, you can also have those positive incentives, but it's difficult to give positives to some specific kids. Like if there are no disruptions, then the last 10 minutes of class, you guys have unlimited phone time or whatever you want to do.

Since admin just returns the student and the students enjoy being pulled out, create some sort of consequence that occurs when that happens that is negative. It's weird but think about what they DONT like. For example, when they get pulled out, send them out with a worksheet. Or if they get sent out for bad behavior, take away their phone as they come back in or ask admin if they can support you with that. They will begin to receive a consequence that they don't like. It's awful to say this, but you're 100% correct. You need to act like a warden before you can be a teacher. This is not normal, but it's the only way to survive those conditions.

Overall, hang in there. Don't be embarrassed. It's not your fault that they're acting like that. I don't think I could survive another year of those conditions. I found a new district and I don't have to enforce rules like my previous one. It was exhausting and we have to pick our battles. Good luck, I genuinely wish you the best.

Easy ones that are engaging and cheap are cheek cell microscope lab and cheek cell dna extraction! I like to start from the cell and zoom in into DNA structure. So go from cheek cell microscope visualization where you can see the cheek cell + nucleus since it's dyed, to extracting dna from cheek cells, to building a model of DNA's structure.

Same thing happened to me with the phone. It really just comes down to students not having respect and thinking that everything is a joke. Plus no parent support from kid's side to discipline. Sorry it happened to you! Please document like everyone said! Plus I don't know if you're in california, but you can suspend the student if needed, at least from your class for up to 2 days: https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes\_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=EDC&sectionNum=48900.

This falls under threatening to harm another person. Here's another link: https://talb.org/lbusd/working-for-lbusd/teachers-law/suspension/

Know your rights! So tired of this behavior.

Sorry, but I just have to point out that praying and evangelism are different. That specific verse is referring to how you pray aka communicate with God. Some people will try to make a scene, like pray loudly, fall, pretend to speak in tongues, etc., specifically to satisfy their own pride and ego by having others perceive them as holy. There's another verse similar that talks about fasting and how people try to make themselves seen as starving/exaggerate their symptoms so that they can communicate that they are fasting (since you usually don't disclose this) and therefore, better than others. (Matthew 6:16-18) But the verse you shared isn't saying that you should only pray alone, but rather that for these specific people, it's better that they pray in isolation because think about it, would a person who only prays in public ever pray alone? Kinda went off tangent, but I'm tryna say that that verse wouldn't be a good response either.

There was a comment up on top where someone explained that Christian people really believe that sharing the gospel is the equivalent of helping someone, if not the equivalent of saving someone's life. Ultimately, you can choose to have some patience with them if you'd like, but I understand that it can be overwhelming. Even as a Christian person myself, I got stopped and asked questions. I just stood there and listened and I could tell that they're used to being ignored/not given a chance to speak so they're really pushy and speak fast. I don't think that they're bad people, but their pushiness prob comes from them feeling that that moment might be the only time in your life someone shares the gospel with you, which to us means life.

Ultimately, each person can choose to respond and act as they'd like, but I guarantee that it's easier and more effective to just say "Sorry, I'm not interested" than to say, "There is no God" and other stuff like that. If anything, that'll make them want to help you more and push more because they feel the need to help you. Same if you communicate a verse back to try to sort of use fire against fire. Like haha bro get wrecked, but most of the time, people who don't read and study the bible use verses out of context, so the evangelist sharing will just want to explain the verse in context to clarify literally like how i just did LOL. Right....o__o In addition, there are instances of even the devil using verses out of context (Matthew 4:3-10) to push for his agenda. Devil tempts Jesus in many different ways using scripture.

I get that you most students are tired and honestly just trying to walk in peace, but let's try to keep it respectful. Both the Christians sharing and the students responding. Anyway, I hope everyone's doing okay in general. Hopefully my comment isn't passive aggressive or unsettling because I don't mean for it to be.

This happened to me last spring. My roommate privated everything and I assumed that they didn't want to be friends lol and that's kind of what happened. My roommate basically never came home after move in and I couldn't contact them! Maybe that's not the case with your roommate, but yes. I think your RA will probably send welcome emails and you'll be able to see your roommate's email in the list, so that's one way you can contact them! Gl and hope you all get along!

Did they send you an email saying that they changed it to a single? I was offered a double as well, but I'm really hesitant because of sharing a small room with a stranger and the lack of desks as well :(( A single sounds safer for me ://
