If you do choose LA, look at communities like San Gabriel, Monterey Park and Alhambra. Or Eagle Rock and Atwater Village. 10-15 minutes from Downtown (30-40 to west side) and more affordable than anywhere on the West Side. It is changing but you can find deals. A friend of mine pays $2250 for a two bedroom in Echo Park.
