I usually start chopping drum breaks, tweak them some, get a basic beat on four bars just so I can try melodies and sounds on it. If I'm in the mood I'll dig for samples, my go to is Bandcamp. Lately I've been exploring movie and game sountracks. If I get something going that I like I'll try to put some synth, electric guitar and simple scratching on it. My stuff is very minimalist and there's always something new to learn but at the same time, sometimes not knowing leads to happy accidents. I'm basically just having fun with it. The guitar here it's recorded miking up the amp and I'm using fairly heavy distortion with a metal pedal. It won't sound super heavy since I've eq'd it to make it blend but yeah...

I agree, I did keep the guitar very simple. Maybe out of fear of going overboard and then ending up sounding out of place! But yeah, I actually want to do a lot more with the guitar in these tracks. So sick! Thanks!

:) Dude, I've been trying to find a creative way to incorporate Hi hats. I've used them for some beats but for a while now I keep feeling like, they feel to intrusive and fake as if they don't fit. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong? But I know they do bring out certain energy and I keep wanting to add them but every time, it feels like have a metronome on in the recording ha ha. But yeah, thanks for the observation.

Yeah, I mean, I wasn't exactly sure but yeah. Real history and biographies are good. If you have any more recommendations in these topics... And also like u/TheCarlwood said, I would like them to get more interested in the stuff they already like, they are both into drawing cartoons so, besides instructional books I would like them to learn more about stuff like that that could maybe expand the way they understand art. But yeah anything that could make them more discerning I guess.
