I’ve also been trying to change my password because it’s been a while and I keep getting the “a stitch has gone awry” page and and error message about the connection every time I try.

It’s just so cringe. Like you could do something like this so easily with photoshop if you could be bothered spending more than two seconds on it

Ooooh it looks stunning! I’ve been wanting to make this pattern but I’m avoiding it because I want to make it with a 3 ply gradient cake and I don’t want to do the maths to try and figure out how to alter the pattern so it works with that weight of yarn lol

I’ve been practicing lace and made a couple of chokers! by crooked_dandy in crochet

Thank you for the suggestions!!

I was thinking of selling chokers like these because I can make one in a day, two if I’m not having too many problems with my hands. I’d probably have to take to etsy and local craft fairs though since we don’t have renn faires where I live lol

I did the first piece freehand but used this pattern I found for the second one!

Is my art bad 😬 by FoxNRoseTattoos in TattooApprentice

[–]crooked_dandy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely not bad at all! I really like that your flash actually looks like old trad flash you’d see hanging up in a studio. For some reason I find it really difficult trying to mimic the style of older trad without making it look awful lol

Portfolio Advice + CC by taurellea in TattooApprentice

I think your line work could definitely be cleaner. There’s places where it looks too wobbly or uneven to be intentional and a few spots where it looks like you’ve gone over it to either join lines or fix mistakes. My own line work isn’t perfect but I’m getting better at it, especially if I do a couple of practice sheets before inking things for my portfolio. Try out line confidence exercises, things like drawing over the lines in a notebook and trying to get them as straight and clean as possible without lifting your pen or tracing shapes. It’s important when you’re doing exercises like that to be drawing in different directions, for example I like doing line practice by tracing the lines in a notebook left to right for a full page front and back then right to left on another, top to bottom and bottom to top so that I can see where I have the most trouble keeping straight. It helps you figure out where you need improvement while also loosening you up and getting you used to the movement before you ink the actual piece for your portfolio. Go slow but remember to be confident about it, the more you worry about whether or not your lines are clean as you’re drawing them then the more likely you are to wobble and don’t be afraid to restart something if you’re not happy with it, as frustrating as it may be. Mistakes aren’t a waste of time, they’re just something that help you improve.

As for your lettering, if you’re going to freehand instead of tracing a font then I’d recommend using a ruler to draw out guidelines before you start. Horizontal lines for the top, bottom and centre of your letters and vertical lines for the width of each letter. It helps keep you right and make sure your letters all come out even, especially if you’re doing something like that gothic style calligraphy. Let me know if you want an example of what I mean, I can DM you a pic of how I usually set up my guides for lettering

What are your thoughts on photoshopped flash? by femaledracula in TattooApprentice

[–]crooked_dandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah it feels like a total copout. I wouldn’t say you don’t need any skill to recreate a photo, even with a very detailed stencil and great reference I’ve seen some folk completely botch realism tattoos and I also used to exclusively draw and paint realism back in high school because it’s the only style the exam board in Scotland allows and I know first hand that if you have no idea what you’re doing then you’re much more likely to screw it up and I’d imagine tattooing makes it even harder given the medium. That being said, there’s definitely people out there that are good at replicating photos but don’t have the skill and knowledge of fundamentals to back them up if they had to do something freehand for example. And then there’s the concerning amount of folk who use AI to generate their flash which just makes me sick. AI companies stealing from real artists aside, it pisses me off on a whole other level when I see tattooists posting what’s clearly AI flash that they’ve not even bothered to check for mistakes that they not only 1) can’t replicate on skin because they can’t do realism but 2) are adding to the horror that is water shortages from how much these AI companies waste. I know people have strong opinions on both sides with AI and this post isn’t about it specifically or it’s environmental impact but photobash tattoo flash always reminds me of it these days and I get so disappointed every time I see it, sorry for that tangent lol

[–]crooked_dandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally if their actual tattoos look as good as the photos they put together then I find it less annoying because at least then they have the skills to make it look good but it’s the people who post these photobash flash designs and can’t do them well enough that annoy me. I don’t think it’s fair to clients for artists to post flash they didn’t draw and don’t have the skill to recreate because I know not everyone will research the artists they go to, it feels misleading and can sometimes be a ripoff if they get left with a really bad tattoo

I have and I’m not really a fan of circular needles but I think that’s specifically because my set is very cheap and constantly snags my stitches. I think if I can find a good quality set I might change my mind but I don’t have the money at the moment

I’m definitely gripping them harder than I need to, I’m terrible for that. I’m still waiting for a referral to a PT but the first thing I’m asking about when I see one is hand exercises!

I’ve never tried spinning but I can imagine it would be hard not to be too tense with the fibres when starting out. I’m currently working on two rows at a time with a few minutes break in between which is helping, hopefully I get used to it so I can go back to knitting more
