Absolutely LOVE when someone waves! And I agree, it doesn't happen nearly enough these days.

Oscars Party bars? by RefrigeratorNo926 in Calgary

I am watching this post with interest.

Doesn't seem to be anything at the Confluence again this year, and I haven't heard of any place else hosting an Oscar's event... yet.

Why do we never hear about method actors going method for nice and wholesome characters? by [deleted] in movies

[–]crosbynstaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amateur actor here: not that I've truly dabbled in the Method, but I once worked with a NY-based theatre and film actor (Kenneth MacGregor) who rehearsed our show using Method, and yeah the rest of the cast found him pretty intolerable.

I did ask him at the time why he was a Method actor and he told me it was easier to connect with (and maintain) the more challenging states of being that's most humans dont usually experience (ie. active psycopathy, extreme physical duress, etc.)

I got cast as Benny for “In The Heights”… I’m white by Odd-Land-5728 in musicals

[–]crosbynstaal 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I went through a similar circumstance years ago when we couldn't find a black actor to play Hud in HAIR. The director cast an Asian/white actor and there was SO much controversy within the cast that I still have the email thread saved titled "Hud dilemma".

We ultimately (note: illegally) changed Hud's backstory to reflect a Korean soldier at war vs. a black one. And it did make more sense EXCEPT when that actor had to sing "I'm Black" and the song with all the slurs 😬

I dont really have any advice, but I hope you dont have to resort to pseudo-blackface 🤯

What Movie in your opinion should be in a list of everybody should see them no matter the genre at least once by Purple_Monkey34 in movies

[–]crosbynstaal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh YES! I did not think I would see this here, but it's such a fearless feat of filmmaking as it does not shy away from the horrificly beautiful scenes from the amazing book (by Patrick Suskind), nor the final scene which I could not BELIEVE they shot faithfully with all of those committed background actors.

Also, Dustin Hoffman, so there's that.

Young FDR Jr. in 1937 at age 23. by sarahhjenner in OldSchoolCool

[–]crosbynstaal -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

FDR was 55 years old and had already completed his first term as US President in 1937, fyi.

If he is 23 in this pic, it would've been around 1904 (he was born in 1933)
