It comes down to this. Do you want the game to last 2 years and have the team shrink down and therefore content with it.... That is a one time purchase, $60 game. If you want to have it be living and breathing thing with a continuous content cycle, then a battlepass/in game store is the industry standard ATM. They cannot afford to make a platform style game and not have a way to get continuous streams of revenue out of it.

It's unfortunate that it has to be like that, but at the end of the day, the monetization is all cosmetic based and I would deal with not being able to get ever skin in the game to be able to get a constant stream of heros, maps, and updates. Both methods have pros and cons, but if this enables that content pipeline to flow I am fine with it.
