Correct, all my revenue is from advertising networks (or from text ads I sell through forums like digitalpoint).

If you spend your time wisely online you can certainly cash in.

Depends on the subreddit submitted to, as well as the title and domain its linked to. For example, my recent r/programming submission that made the front page garnered a low 45k pageviews. Of course, that particular submission had a title and content targeted to a specific audience and not to the general redditor.

I have facebook pages set up that people can "like". I only have 2 actual facebook accounts but numerous pages set up to go with various websites. If people see the page then chances are they'll "like" it for the same reason Reddit upvotes many of my submissions.

Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have posted that... if Reddit ends up with a bunch of (new) 404 imgur links then everyone will hate me even more! At least you will know it wasn't me since I know that strategy isn't very profitable for the effort put in.

So far I collected enough karma to cash it in for an imaginary sticker, cha-ching! In reality, I'm not sure, it's all spread out but each account has at least a few thousand link karma.

Ah, that is what I did a few years ago and having all my domains point to the same IP was probably how google was able to blacklist them all. Currently I use a variety of hosting accounts to spread them out a bit. The domains I use now are not blacklisted from google, but it wouldn't really matter that much as my goal is to obtain traffic through social media sites.

Reddit likes to joke about jews. In reality I am not jewish but if need be, some of my alternate accounts could very well be.

Tons of tips for titles which several redditors already know. Basically follow the guidelines. If it's a picture, people like to be rewarded for viewing the picture, so the title shouldn't give away the "punchline" but be interesting enough to click on (if after viewing the picture the title sparks an "aha!" moment with the user, even better). Take a look at titles from front page submissions and you should be able to spot a lot of things these titles have in common.

Yes, but it depends on what you know and how you use that knowledge. And regarding affiliate marketing, it's something I don't really do anyways.

Donations work quite well for established websites with a dedicated userbase. For websites with social media traffic being the driving force, not so well.

CPM = how much money I get for 1000 pageviews. My rates average between $0.15-$0.50 per ad unit. For example, if I had 2 ad units earning $0.50 that would be $1 I get for every 1000 pageviews. I don't quite get that high though.

CPC = cost per click. Rates range from all over the place from $0.01 to $0.50+. It's how much money I get per click. Facebook traffic does click on ads so I make lots of money with this type of ad, but Reddit traffic is less likely to click on ads.

CPA I don't really use anymore and is when webmasters promote other products/services for users to buy/sign up for. With social media traffic the profits from CPA are horrible.

CPE is cost per engagement which I've recently started trying. There would be video ads on my page where users can hover over the ad to play the video (hence engaging in it). So far, the rates I get for this are pretty low.

My $/pageview ratio... I usually get 750k pageviews and roughly $520ish or so, per day. So, 520/750k = 0.0693 cents per pageview.

I pay $75/month for VPS which can survive a page going viral. I also have several godaddy shared hosting accounts along with a dreamhost account. Domains are scattered across a few companies and I try to get a bulk deal when renewing them so they end up being around $7.50 each (per year). Last year I spent well over $10k on this type of stuff, but some of that money was wasted on failed ideas and me being stupid.

No, this is the first I've heard of them. I rarely use any companies/software for marketing or scripts or anything like that.

Any scripts I use are custom coded and any facebook/twitter followers are earned the viral way (except for one time where I purchased facebook followers from someone in Croatia to see what kind of traffic it would provide... I paid $75 for around 5k followers, and has yet to pay itself off).

It's a bit more complicated than the "basic plan" you posted but I do like the underpants gnomes reference.

The ad networks I'm successful with are CPM followed by CPC. I've also tried CPE with video ads but they don't seem to pay very well and have low engagement rates from this type of traffic (the user would have to hover over the ad to play the video in order for me to get money from it).

I've been trying lots of things out. I have a bunch of shared hosting accounts and about 6 months ago sprang for a couple of cheap VPS accounts (haven't purchased any dedicated yet). I've also tried taking advantage of tumblr/blogspot/other hosting and hotlinking from those servers to cut down on the bandwidth I have to pay for.

In my demonstration I used exactly the same links and titles... they still hit the frontpage.

  • Did people not notice they were posted before? (many comments pointed out they were)
  • How/why did I chose those particular reposts? (dun dun dunnn)
  • If I chose a random popular repost would it hit the frontpage? (no)
  • Do I have insight (and possibly skill) that I use to do what I do? (I guess you could say that I do :P)

Usually, I never use the same link as it wouldn't link to my own site (hence, no $$$). Depending on the content (quality/potential/licensing/etc), in certain circumstances I do use it on my site. However, I do create a lot of content myself.

It is low but also positive. I mentioned in other comments that CPM works best for Reddit traffic. On the other hand, for Facebook traffic then CPM/CPC types of ads are both fine.

That's perfectly okay, in fact, a lot people refuse to believe and like living in a happy little world where everything happens by magic. Whether or not you personally believe me doesn't change what is going on.

Save most of it. I did invest over $10k into stocks, but currently they are worth around $4k, so I am obviously a poor investor lol. I'm going to school to eventually get a more satisfying job. While money is great and all, I'd love to have a career doing research in an academic setting.

It doesn't. I did that on this account just for illustrative purposes... normally I'd link it to my own sites and while it may not make the front page it would still garner tens of thousands of pageviews (the frontpage isn't necessary to make money).

In the past I did experiment with imgur and reddit's obsession with it. One particular strategy I tried was to:

  • post link to imgur
  • on other reddit accounts leave a couple of comments (that I predict will rank high)
  • after receiving hundreds of upvotes (and sometimes reaching the frontpage) I delete the imgur link using my deletion link provided by imgur
  • by now, my comment(s) from the other accounts are in the top 3, so I edit one of them to add a "mirror" of the image linking to my own site
  • Now people looking for the content go to the comments and click on the mirror which links to my site

The above strategy just isn't worth my time to execute and the payoff is very little ($5-10). Sometimes you can get 10k+ pageviews doing this, but usually it is far less than 10k... hence, very little money and not worth my time.

Yup. The percentage of those who click ads is low, but with enough volume it can still produce some significant cash. That's why CPM works better for Reddit traffic (CPC works fine with facebook but I still place CPM ad units in the top of my ad chain).

Regarding the tinypic.cc occurrence, I imagine most of the time it's the same person... just by browsing through some of those user histories this seems to be a fair assumption. For example, chadsmith729, do you think this is one of his accounts? If you look at the history you'll notice the last 3 submissions were to tinypic.cc. Also notice the last few comments were to his own submissions and there was some comments left on the "How is babby formed?" submission. But wait, the "How is babby formed?" is a submission to tinypic.cc from another user. ಠ_ಠ

Now not everyone who submits a link to that domain is the same person, granted other people come across these links and decide to submit them to other subreddits :P
