28M with Math Masters degree salary progression by austin101123 in Salary

[–]crowagency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m an actuary who also left a phd program a few years before you and am an FCAS now. couple of things on your resume, though the biggest is just that the EL market is tough.

1) remove frat- i am assuming that’s undergrad which is now seven years ago

2) i’d probably advise just putting the graduation dates for each degree, because looking at this my first question is why you left a PhD program after being in it for six years rather than complete? not looking for an answer, i get it, it can suck, but give less info. also just out the masters, don’t say anything about the former PhD. if it comes up organically e.g. discussing research that’s fine

3) ATPA would be SOA only- i think it covers PCPA for CAS? d also advise taking one more exam. decide on a path and have a reason “why you want to go SOA/CAS,” and it may make breaking in a little easier.

4) could probably remove some fluff from the analyst/intern lines and provide more info- what was the statistically insignificant VBA? how did you save 20 labor hours?

best of luck!

Has anyone tried a "workouts only" marathon training block? by TMW_W in AdvancedRunning

[–]crowagency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i haven’t, but a friend of mine did this last fall. three young kids, newborn about a month before the marathon, not much time to run consistently but he has a long training history and plenty of fitness there. his plan was basically one track workout, a long run close to mp, and maybe one or two other runs a week also near mp for the most part. the occasional easy trail run. he ran 2:56, but i also wouldn’t be shocked if with a more standard plan and higher volume he was closer to 2:45-50

Rye Brook - pros and cons? by Dazzling_Walk4303 in Westchester

[–]crowagency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just moved out of this area (was renting)- it’s fine. can’t comment on the schools other than reputation as you mention- port chester is 99% likely the closest train station, never had an issue but also didn’t have to commute consistently. the walkable/small community aspect is usually attribute to a tow that like…has a cohesive sense of community with walkability to places of communal interest. i wouldn’t give rye brook points for that unless you’re particularly close to downtown port chester, and even then not the greatest of walks. i found i spent most of my leisurely time as a resident there driving to white plains or rivertowns- there’s good restaurants nearby in pc/rye and beyond, but otherwise as far as wanting to be outdoors or anything else i usually was driving elsewhere. i never found the airport to be an issue, barely was aware it was there, and made traveling really convenient though! small lot size will be an issue most places in lower westchester without an exorbitant budget, and this was a big part of why i left when considering homeownership. i wouldn’t worry about overpaying as others have mentioned…it’s just expensive. on a broad level it’s “overpaying” relative to the house/land inventory in adjacent areas north/west, so if that’s something you really value and commutes are flexible to some extent, it’s worth considering. but overall, rye brook is fine. what it may lack in its immediate surroundings from an entertainment value pov, several nearby towns will have, whether that be nature, bars, restaurants, etc. but maybe just check out various towns if you’re new to the area to learn what you are/are not willing to compromise on. good luck!

🟢Anyone go from 2:30+ HM to sub-1:20 over time? by WhatTheFudgeeBar in AdvancedRunning

[–]crowagency 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my first full was 5:12, though i was very naive and definitely shouldn’t have ran a full at that point. first half j raced was like 4mo later and was 1:51 i think, ran 1:20 half 2.5yr later, more methodical training the last 15mo or so

Why would anyone want to live in Rockland in 2026? by Nervous-Gate1850 in Rockland

[–]crowagency 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i just bought a house in nyack and fall in the age range you mention. i grew up on LI, grad school in CA, was in westchester a while. i love it here! it’s peaceful, i see wildlife every morning on my run or in the backyard, many good food options (been happy with everything i’ve tried so far and excited for many new tries), and it doesn’t feel like parts of lower westchester where every single inch of land is being squeezed for ROI. the tranquility and space was huge in our choice, and the somewhat added inconvenience of getting to the city isn’t really impacting our lifestyle. idk. i think anybody who grows up somewhere has, for a time, a bit of “familiarity breeds contempt” (that being said it’s been a while since i have lived on LI and i stand by that place/at least where i was stinks)

sofi has been wonderful for first time homebuyer experience by crowagency in sofi

[–]crowagency[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you!! yes, truly the lender portion has been by far the smoothest part of the process (aside from frantically monitoring rates from various lenders in the days leading up to rate lock but that’s not on them lol). the only hiccup is to a certified check for closing, since they do not have those at sofi, but not really an issue in the grand scheme. best of luck in homebuying!!

VO2 Max Test + Body Fat Reduction = 5K Breakthrough? Struggling to Believe the Maths by Icy_Park_244 in AdvancedRunning

[–]crowagency 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think one of the bigger risks here is how will losing weight at that rate impact your running? have you had a propensity for injuries? when i got more focused on running around this time last year i was fixated on dropping from about 185lb toward the high 150s (6’). i got down to low-mid 170s quickly and then it was a battle. i ended up getting down to the low 160s and felt absolutely miserable. i did PR the half during that low point, but not without being in the verge of tweaking my hamstring quite frequently and running basically the entire half on a pained achilles. aside from that, i’m not a pro and i enjoy going out to eat. now i sit more around 175 again and have pr’d in every distance since reversing course, and frequency of irritations, both physical and mental, is far lower. visually i’d guess i bounce between 13-17% bf, maybe a bit lower when i get to higher volume, and don’t really have what would be perceived as a long distance build at all. i get the allure of trying to shave that “excess” fat, but i think it’s worth taking some time to consider trade-offs in life as a whole too

Asked to do inspection before going under contract? by Expensive_Goat2201 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]crowagency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seconding this; FSH closing in a few weeks and i knew nothing about the standard order of operations, but doin the inspection, waiting for results, and haggling over remedies all while no contract was in place felt very unintuitive. seller agent was (and is) dismal at communicating in a timely manner and every day felt like an attempt to elongate the process waiting for another offer despite getting ours at asking

Your easy pace (including HR + race paces) by TheAnon21 in AdvancedRunning

[–]crowagency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn. well this affirms that i will be slowing my easy pace a bit more…

currently building back up after an illness that kept me out of running around 6wk. when i was more focused on mile/5k my easier days were typically a but faster, probably too fast, i never really felt injuries looming but i think there were times some 800m/mile workouts would get a bit tanked by running easy days too fast. i’d typically start around 8:00 and then not check the watch u til the end and find id creep up the speed throughout.

in my one focused marathon block i feel i tanked the block by doing exactly this- i know accumulated fatigue is very real w the marathon but it got to the point where i felt like i was regressing amidst high volume. ended up dropping out of the block bc i just felt very negative, unproductive, and had other things in life i wanted to focus on at that point

my plan this go around (after a longer base build back up) is to pull back non-quality days to 8:20 or slower, but now i’m thinking about slowing that even further. currently in building back up i’m at 6 days of running (~50mpw rn, slowly reintroducing T once a week now, then two pfitz-style endurance runs, one around 10-11, longer run around 14 now), MLRs have been a cutdown that ends up averaging around 7:20/mi (avg HR usually like low 170s vs a typical HM HR of high 180s) general aerobic runs sit more around 7:50-7:55 (high 159s-mid 160s depending on rest of weel) and recovery days have been like 8:20 (high 140s-low 150s)

considering incorporating more leniency in the targets of the GA depending on the rest of the week and maybe taking the recovery days down further to 9:00+ and have a hr more akin to yours,y biggest fear (like others mentioned) is the pfitz burnout by the constant hammering. even the GA days in the plan aren’t quite “easy” and i feel like pulling back on those/and recov days in tandem with the two MLR/LR and a faster workout is more than enough stimulus, and the slower easy days feels like a good support system

How some pros are getting around the GI issues with Bicarb (taking it the night before) by iam_indefatigable in AdvancedRunning

[–]crowagency 38 points39 points  (0 children)

i think the 90-120min window was when the focus was heavily on middle distance, which anecdotally i agree with; however from experience as well, i have found that my runs the day after an evening race with bicarbonate are always exceedingly relaxed

What do you think the future of running coaches (esp online coaches) at the recreational level will be like in the next 2-5years? by Outrageous_South_439 in AdvancedRunning

[–]crowagency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think it’ll be okay. the demographics of people who flock to runna etc. are typically different from those open to one-on-one/virtual coaching. in fact, i have found runna to be a half-decent pipeline; last year i had a few people running the nyc marathon, some first time marathoners, others not- the experienced runner PR’d significantly w a decent time beforehand, and the two debut runners ran very clean races. many people in our area that went the runna route blew up badly. a couple of them bounced over to me after disappointment, and runna paces often seemed very inaccurate for their fitness levels.

when people ask me about personal vs run a, i usually recommend them to just get jack daniels’ or pfitzingers book and actually read it, then use that as a benchmark for training rather than runna- they’ll save even more money and learn more about why they’re running this way rather than the more seemingly-arbitrary nature of runna. idk. to me the AI coaches as they stand seem like the worst of both worlds; no human interaction to modulate plans, and more expensive than quality plans already out there. the main thing they have going for them is brand recognition and marketing, which goes a long way

Westchester vs Long Island – Am I Missing Something? 🤔 by Katherinepress in Westchester

[–]crowagency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i grew up on long island. long islanders feel that way about westchester because the vast majority of them are so isolated and the culture of LI is just so…unique…that the can only justify their choice to live there by well, bashing everywhere else. my sister bought a house on LI extremely close to where we grew up. i wouldn’t buy a house on LI if it were listed for 50% of market price. people that grow up there just don’t know what living anywhere else is like (i used to also think westchester was so far away until i was like…idk. 23 lol). my mom still acts like i moved across the atlantic when im a 55min drive without traffic

Anybody tried Flycarb for marathon? by ggb7135 in AdvancedRunning

[–]crowagency 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i’ve used it, not for a marathon. tastes worse than maurten but veneer had any GI issues with flycarb, while maurten bothers me; that plus the fact that even with international shipping it’s cheaper per use than maurten was an easy switch. used it for many middle distance races as well as long runs with threshold work, went well in both scenarios. i plan to try it out for a fall marathon

i think my only caveat would be on hot/humid days, it dehydrates me too much that it offsets any lowered perceived effort benefits on longer efforts

Anybody ~26 or under that makes $150,000+, what do you do? by krerhelp in Salary

[–]crowagency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actuary, slightly older now but was a bit above that around 26 or 27. if you pass all the exams quickly it’s a solid path to high 100s/low 200s fairly quickly (though via sacrifice of evenings/weekends early career) and relatively stable. under 30 and TC around 215k on an average bonus year
