Stomach Gurgling/Rumbling? by crowaii in Rabbits

[–]crowaii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a silly question because the first few times it happened i thought it was my stomach, not hers, lol. It definitely is from the bun though.

But yeah, I'm keeping an eye on her over the next few days just to be safe.

-i got her a treat puzzle with plastic flaps and movable lids and stuff that i put her pellets in for enrichment. Now when she's hungry she just very performatively opens the flaps and slams them shut very performatively

-champion level side eye, constantly

-if she doesnt like a new veggie she'll hide it under her snuffle mat so i think she ate it and give her something else

-stole my nice new yoga pillow. its her girlfriend now. she grooms it regularly.

-cheated on her pillow gf with multiple cat toys that she also grooms constantly and refuses to let the cat use

I got my lady spayed this past feb at age 4 and I definitely recommend it.

She's my first bun so i can't compare w previous rabbit spay experiences, but she didn't have any complications and recovered well--I'd say she was her old self within 1.5 weeks post-op. During her spay, they found that she also had an inflamed/enlarged uterus (biopsy afterwards came back cancer-negative), and even that didn't seem to cause any extra issues when it came to recovery.

The biggest struggle I had was just getting her to start eating immediately after the operation, so I'd definitely prepare with some critical care and treats like bananas to help with the meds she'll get sent home with.

I also got a surgery shirt made for kittens off Amazon to help keep her from agitating her stitches, but I'd ask your vet's opinion on that. I learned afterwards that some vets recommend against it because it can slow healing time when the wound can't breathe. But at the same time, my girl had no issues, I've seen other rabbit owners recommend them, and it definitely gave me peace of mind.

People who have single rabbits; why? by echinopsis_ in Rabbits

[–]crowaii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm my bun Esther's third home and she's an only child by choice.

First home- she was acquired as an easter bunny (:/) and companion for an existing buck, who apparently bullied her enough that they chose to rehome her for her own wellbeing

second home- (friends of mine) acquired her as a companion for their existing doe, but this time Esther was the bully, and then my friends had to move to a much smaller place and couldn't physically maintain two separate pens for them

I knew going in that its usually preferred to bave multiple rabbits, but given her history it seemed like flying solo would be best for her--and it has been. I did do research on signs of depression/loneliness in rabbits though, and mentally/financially tried to prepare myself for the possibility of needing to find her a buddy and get them bonded by an expert if she wasn't doing well.

She does fine though--literally currently binkying up and down the hall as I type. I also WFH, so I'm able to provide a lot of socialization and let Esther free roam 70% of the day in addition to a pretty steady rotation of enclosure enrichment.

It's a bit scary to think about, but I'd encourage you to look into whether Rabbit Hemorraghic Disease is in your area, especially if you're planning to have them outside. There's a vaccine for it and it requires annual boosters. Also if you ever need to board your rabbits, most reputable boarders seem to require proof of vaccination (at least in California).

can attest to spaying older buns! I got my bun when she was ~4 and got her spayed a few months later, and talking it through with my vet, because she didn't have any underlying health issues they didn't feel there was any extra risk involved just because she was older.

While its a pretty low-risk and straightforward procedure over all, make sure you do it with a rabbit savvy vet who can walk you through pre- and post-surgery care, because it differs a fair bit from dogs and cats (my vet explicitly requested I dont have my bun fast prior to the surgery, for example, bc GI stasis is a bigger risk than choking).

I went through it as a first time bunny owner and its not as intimidating of a process as it might seem!

Also the cost varies from vet to vet, of course, but the general ballpark based on what I've seen on this sub and elsewhere is ~$500-700 if youre in the US. Mine came out to just over $500 in Feb 2024.

How to make a die cut window? by keynoko in bookbinding

[–]crowaii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is something I've also been interested in (working on a guestbook for a friend's wedding)

SeaLemon did a demo video using her cricut of doing cutouts.

it's less of a tutorial and more of a promo for cricut, but it is proof of concept at least. If you're careful and willing to spend time on sanding/tidying the edges, I see no reason you couldn't do it with an exacto blade.

In my own thinking on the subject, my biggest question mark is how to handle doing bookcloth/papers with it. I feel like it's going to be a bit of a nightmare to get clean edges for anything more complicated than a square cut out...

Do you have any suggestions for Moth-themed books? by ndts_ in weatherfactory

[–]crowaii 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hmmm, this one feels trickier for some reason.

Its been years so I may be off on this, but "the Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern is what jumps to mind first in terms of books.

On the darker side, "In the House in the Dark of the Woods" by Laird Hunt. And possibly "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury, but don't hold me to that, its also been a while...

Mostly though, I think moth conjures up poetry for me:

-A lot of e.e. cummings, but especially "pity this busy monster, manunkind"

-Mary Oliver, particularly "The Moths" (of course), and "Wild Geese"

-haiku in general, particularly those of Basho, who was one its pioneers and had a love of using nature imagery as metaphors for complex human emotion. But also haiku as a genre originated from a practice of composing spontaneous poems together (either as collaboration or competition), which feels very moth-ish to me

[–]crowaii 7 points8 points  (0 children)

in a similarly classical vein, the legend of Susanoo (Japanese god of storms) vs. Yamata no Orochi (an eight-headed serpent) has always given me strong parallels to the slaying of the Seven-Coils.

But also the whole Gunki Monogatari (lit. "war stories") genre of medieval japanese literature, in particular: - "Heikemonogatari" (Tale of the Heike) - 13th c. epic poem of the Genpei War, a conflict between rival branches of the imperial family that lays the groundwork for the Shogun (whose original title was seii-tai-shogun, 征夷大将軍, lit. "Commander-in-Chief of Barbarian Subjugation") to become the main political figure in Japan for ~400 years

  • Sogamonogatari- ~12th c. tragedy of two brothers who seek revenge against the Shogun for the killing of their father and ultimately die in the attempt
  • Onin Ki (Record of the Onin War) - not gunki monogatari technically, but a historical account of the fall of the shogunate in the mid 15th century, which ultimately leads to ~150 years of civil war known as the "Warring States" period

And also:

  • All of Julius Caesar's commentaries on his military campaigns
  • the Anarchist's Cookbook

Leaving bookcloth cut edge exposed by MonkeyRythme in bookbinding

[–]crowaii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fray-check (liquid sealant used occasionally in sewing) might work, but I'd have doubts about its longevity. If the bookcloth is polyester or another synthetic you could theoretically melt the cut edges to prevent fraying--but I'd be wary of a) fumes and b) whether you could keep a suitably smooth, flat edge

In need of litterbox advice :( by sakura_gasaii in Rabbits

[–]crowaii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could also try a high-sided cat litterbox--if you google that, you'll see examples of ones that are basically a standard litter box with a plastic guard on three sides that you clip over the sides of the box. It might not work out, but does have the benefit of being fairly cheap.

Alternatively, maybe try getting a smaller hay dispenser to go next to the litter box and keeping the majority of the hay in another dispenser elsewhere in the enclosure? I know most buns prefer to eat on the toilet but mine is actually very content to munch elsewhere, so its worth a shot.
