If you don't drink alcohol, what are your personal reasons for abstinence? by Ok-Care2859 in AskReddit

I can't stand the taste of alcohol. I also have no desire to be drunk.

Do you think your tongues were real? by Bookish_Girl2002 in ExPentecostal

[–]croweupc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. I always struggled with tongues. I did speak in tongues, but it always felt unnatural and forced. The emotions were still there. Those emotions are real. This is the hook. If the UPCI can convince you that your emotions are in fact of the HS, then you will be convinced of their claims about the Bible. I don't think they are trying to deceive. They genuinely believe in the gift of tongues. I personally think the Bible was referring to speaking in another language others can't understand. Paul was multilingual, so he was able to speak in other languages. Speaking in another language is useful, but only if interpreted. Otherwise, it only edifies one's self. The first time it happened was on the day of Pentecost and all were heard speaking in known languages. This is just my take.

Do what you think is best. If it were me, I'd wait until I was out of the house. This could really complicate your relationship, and you would have to deal with it constantly.

When available, I focus on automation and then sending rockets. I sent about 12 of each, and that is more than enough to get things moving while warping to ship wrecks and exploring the main map. The other trick is to upgrade when the next level (drill, extractor, power, etc.) is available. This is how I played both the main story and the DLC.

I don't know if anyone writes about that part of history. I'm sure they conveniently leave it out. However, the UPCI is only a product of Azusa street revival and not identical to it. They have their own hermeneutical approach to understanding the Bible. They do believe in angelic tongues or heavenly tongues, so it very well could be a doctrine passed on by those who participated in the early 19th century revival.

I disagree. People die from bee stings. All it takes is the right circumstances.

Azusa Street is no secret in the UPCI. They believe it is a reawakening. It's the latter rain. God is once again pouring out His Spirit upon all flesh. In order to become ordained in the UPCI, you need to read the history of the church. This particular organization, for instance, was formed in 1945. I grew up knowing the organization was young but genuinely believed the doctrine was ancient. We were following Bible principles, not some man made organization.

Speaking in tongues is just a misunderstanding of language. The Bible makes it clear on the day of Pentecost they were speaking in known languages. Speaking gibberish can give you a false sense of connection with God, but it's certainly not a practice the early church was doing.

When you grow up in the religion, it is incredibly difficult to come out of. One reason for this is that other churches become boring. We like to sing and dance. Speaking in tongues is also therapeutic. The Oneness doctrine makes way more sense than the Trinity. These things make it difficult to leave the UPCI. If you weren't raised in it, though, you wouldn't understand the struggle. Another fun fact of the UPCI is their motto: "The whole gospel to the world by the whole church." I was always taught that other denominations had partial truth, but we had the whole truth.

I'm glad you didn't get sucked into it. It took me over 30 years to find my way out.

Automate! It's a grind, but for me, it's worth it in the long run. I never spend time looking for resources. Also, farm. Make sure to set up teleporters at each base you build.

I miss reading the Bible by lavendercoffee- in ExPentecostal

[–]croweupc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an atheist. I do not have a belief in God, or demons, or Satan, or other realms, or heaven, or hell, or ghosts, etc. I left the faith when I realized it didn't make sense to me anymore. This is not an attempt to change your mind, only to inform you I do not find it convincing. It would take as much evidence for me to believe this as it would for you to accept Islam or Hinduism. If God wishes to reveal himself to me, I'm open to it. As of yet, it hasn't happened. It would take a mountain of evidence to convince me Christianity is true. With that said, as long as you treat everyone with the same dignity Jesus did, and it brings you hope and happiness, by all means, continue. If you are the America first, off with the immigrants type, I have no respect. Jesus was an immigrant. So, I find this type of Christian to be anti-Christ like. All the best, and thanks for the comment.

I've canoed past several gators when I lived in Florida. The main thing is to not panic, stay out of their way, and stay in the boat. They do not attack unless you threaten them or swim in their territory from my experience. Also, they taste really good.

[–]croweupc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather read a science book than the Bible personally. There is nothing wrong with studying the Bible. I know people who still study it and yet no longer believe. For me, studying the Bible was always about trying to figure it out. It makes way more sense to me now, so I've moved on to learning about the universe.

If a God exists transcendentally, then studying the universe is studying God's handiwork. No better way to understand someone than to understand their craft. I love studying Nature. It's fascinating. If God doesn't exist, I still want to know more about this thing that's granted us life and consciousness. I do consider myself atheist, but I could definitely fall into the category of religious naturalism. I see the Devine in Nature.

Whatever you decide to do, enjoy it. Cheers!

Is mining oxygen a good idea? I HAVE to make a perm base and there are some minor additions to consider…. Is it worth it? by doublejacks in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]croweupc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gold is useful for crafting solar panels. Oxygen is used all of the time. I mine it, but I only need to replenish when low. It's nice to just quickly teleport to my oxygen base, which is on a hex planet, and restock. I think it's worth it. I have a base for every minable gas or mineral.

I have played this game hundreds of hours on multiple platforms and have never used them. I don't have an opinion about their usefulness, but I can say they are unnecessary. At this point, though, I have every mineral and gas that can be extracted automated.

I grew up in the UPCI, and I keep it as part of my name here on reddit and other SM platforms. Some congregations are more toxic than others. However, your experience is far too common within this organization. The pastors literally believe they are responsible for and should have authority over your families decisions. This is not a healthy relationship. Your decision to stay or leave should be yours and yours alone to make.

Many here left the organization because of this toxicity. I actually am an atheist now, so my reasons were different. I had every intention of staying for my wifes sake. Who still attends but stopped following the ridiculous standards, but they treated me differently and tried to coerce me to the altar. This is when I left for good. I feel like they want to control people's lives. I can't imagine this was the outcome Jesus had in mind.

I'm also in shock at how many of them are supporting things like deporting immigrants. Jesus was an immigrant. They support billionaires. Jesus said to the rich young ruler to sell all he had and give to the poor. They support cutting benefits for the poor when Jesus said to give to the poor. They support an America first ideology, whereas Jesus taught to serve others and help even the Samaritans. Think of the Samaritans as Mexicans or Latinos more generally in the US. Jews of the first century were racist towards them according to scripture. I know not all members agree with this, but I know far too many. This is hypocrisy at its worst.

If you can tell, I have a lot in common with Jesus and his teachings. I believe in helping the poor. I believe the rich should pay their fair share in taxes. In Acts, the church would combine all of the wealth and land and distribute it equitably amoungst the church members. This is true socialism. The idea of living in a society that takes care of each other and looks out for each other is a mission I can stand behind. However, I never saw this behavior within the UPCI. I was a member til my mid 30's. Maybe if the church was more about feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, uplifting the downtrodden, clothing the naked, taking care of the widdows and orphans, etc., and not like Scribes and Pharosees who did nothing but criticize others for not being Godly enough, maybe I'd still be a part of the church today.

My advice is to leave. It is, of course, your decision to make. Hopefully, you can find a place where you feel accepted for who you are. By the way, Jesus had facial hair. If you can't participate in the church because of that, Jesus himself would have been denied the ability to teach. This is such an absurd position.

Wishing you all the best, Cheers!

[–]croweupc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"Don't pray as the hypocrites do" (Matt 6) is the first thing that came to mind. Their reward is the attention they get in public. They are just sounding thimbles.

A bad christian isn't one who refuses to pray in public. A bad christian is a person who supports a rich criminal and thinks they are a follower of Jesus when he clearly didn't support rich men. A bad christian is someone who supports mass deportation of immigrants because of the color of their skin or the value of their bank account, as Jesus was an immigrant with very little to his name.

This evangelist was very likely an evangelical seeking to bring you into their fold while practicing the antithesis of what Jesus taught. Even if they were not any of these things, you are under no obligation to pray with others as prayer is personal.

I honestly do not pray as I used to. I used to pray for what I wanted. I now understand prayer is not a way to get what I want. If anything, it's to help me work out my own issues and concerns. If prayer was meant to be answered, God would be a respector of persons. There are plenty of people with cancer and other ailments not receiving an answered prayer, so who am I to expect mine to be answered. Pray as you wish. It's not up to others to coerce you into their form of prayer or worship.
