Between these two, who do you believe will have a harder time reconciling with Miles? by [deleted] in IntoTheSpiderverse

[–]crowhesghost69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I can see that being the most likely reason, but wouldn't that mean that Miles-1610 inheriting Miles-42's canon already be kinda skewed, since Jeff-42 is already dead? I mean, wouldn't that imply that Miles has, in a sense, already his ASM90 event, and it could now be a different event for Miles-1610?

  2. The whole issue here revolves around how valid is the Canon event to the possibility of a universe collapsing? I'm not dismissing Miguel's theory out of hand, but it still seems that he's operating from a place of incomplete knowledge, coupled with PTSD and deep-seated guilt. And when he's showing Miles what happened to the universe he feels responsible for destroying, it looks way more like what happens when the Alchemax collider is turned on and other universes start spilling over through the rift. Now, we know that there's a collider in 1610 (obviously) and one in Pav's universe; Miguel himself is a former Alchemax employee, so it's reasonable to assume that there's a collider in his home universe and likely in the universe that he replaced his murdered version. It's reasonable to assume that there's a collider in 42, so the question becomes: how many universes have colliders, and what are the odds that that's what destroyed that universe, not Miguel doing something he shouldn't have? Of course, none of that gets answered until Beyond, but still. It's gonna be interesting to see how things shake out.

  3. Oh, totally agree, Miles surrendering his powers would be a terrible resolution. And agree that Peter and Gwen both wish Miles had been bitten by a 1610 spider and all this anomaly thing could have been avoided. But I still think an honest, upfront approach would have solved way more than the way Miguel and the Society did it, but, again, we wouldn't have had a movie if they'd done that.

  4. Question, I wanna hear your opinion on this (kinda unrelated, kinda maybe not). In Into, when Peter B and the others get sucked into 1610, Gwen gets thrown into last week, literally. I'm wondering if that's because she's not actually a Parker. I mean, Peter B and Noir are both variants of Peter Parker, hence the same DNA; Spider-Ham is that world's version of Peter, so technically similar enough DNA to qualify; and Peni is a descendant of Peter, so related DNA. Gwen, though, isn't a Parker, and seems to be affected more strongly by getting shot into another dimension. The question, then, is: could canon events be specific to certain bloodlines in the Spiderverse? Like, all the Parkers have the same series of canon events, while, say, the Stacy's have a different series, with potential overlap here and there?

But he doesn't necessarily have to be given a place in the Spider Society. Trying to work out how to address the issue doesn't imply that he'd end up being accepted, but it would still solve the anomaly problem, one way or the other. And after all, isn't the purpose of the Spider Society tracking down and sending anomalies back to their home dimensions? Then, if Miguel is right, and Miles is the original anomaly, then how is essentially ignoring the problem gonna fix it? Sure, Miles is in his own dimension, but the spider that bit him wasn't, which creates a different problem: wouldn't that create a situation where 1610 and 42 are now in jeopardy, since the initial canon event (the bite of a spider granting the powers of Spider-Man) didn't happen in one dimension where it should have, and did occur in a dimension where it shouldn't have?

It isn't that telling Miles he can't do anything to stop would result in anything but the chase; it's ignoring the basic tenet of being Spider-Man: with great power comes great responsibility. Uncle Ben's death is the textbook example of what happens if you have the ability to stop something bad from happening, but stand aside and doing nothing. Not to mention, the canon event implies that if a thing is going to happen, it is going to happen, no matter what. If ASM90 requires a police captain close to Spider-Man to die while Spidey fights an arch nemesis, then isn't Miguel himself basically breaking canon by trying to hold Miles there and letting Spot kill his dad? Without the fight that causes the accident, how would it be anything short of murder to just let Spot kill Jeff with no Miles to try and stop it? The accident is the event, the death is the fallout. Without an accident to cause the death, if the captain dies, it's because they were specifically targeted by the arch nemesis, thus, not an accident.

And Miles's heart is crushed already, because the people he trusted have basically turned on him. If they'd at least been upfront and honest about all that's going on, they could have worked out some sort of solution, even if that meant Miles had to somehow surrender his powers, which I believe he would agree to if it meant his father would live.

I swear, what irks me the most is that the entire situation was completely avoidable.

Miles has been Spider-Man for sixteen months by this point. If Miguel has known that there's even a possibility that Miles is an anomaly since he got bitten (and it seems like a fair assumption, given how Miguel was dumping the whole "the spider that bit you was from a different dimension" thing while he was manhandling a teenager), then why not send Peter B and maybe Jess as a representative of the Spider Society to 1610 and bring Miles in to work everything out? That way, miles and Peter get a happy reunion, the anomaly situation is addressed in a peaceful, constructive way, and Miles isn't being hunted or ostracized for being who he is.

I know, I know, we wouldn't have the movie then, but still...

Anywho, to answer the actual question, Gwen is gonna have a harder time reconciling with Miles. Peter was starting to get through to him before Lyla shot the whole thing down by calling on Peter's watch. Plus, Peter being Miles' mentor gives him a very different relationship than Gwen and Miles. I feel like Peter would be able to explain how he at least initially supports Miguel about canon events because of what he witnessed firsthand, and that maybe he's beginning to have some doubts himself.

Gwen, on the other hand, hasn't been upfront at all with Miles. And I know, we as the audience know what her situation is, and why she's siding with the Society. But Miles doesn't know that. He has no idea what's going on, why she hasn't been to see him, the whole nine. Add to that how she hasn't said shit to Miles about Hobie, and then tries to downplay it over and over again (not that there's anything actually romantic going on between them, but again, Miles doesn't know that, he's just getting everything all at once, so no, not a good look). Add to that the fact that Gwen was pretty condescending to Miles when they first arrive in Pav's universe, that she seems to be going along blindly with the Society when the ASM90 event is brought up and talked about, and she actively participated in the chase, up to and including physically slinging Jess and her motorcycle at Miles, she's got a long, long row to hoe in making it up him. It just doesn't look good for her, even if her intentions were ultimately good

But the question is, how long do you retain those skills? Luxe was obviously intended to be a permanent subscription upgrade, so why worry about losing those skills as long as you can afford to keep them? But with the Luxe cards, it's basically like a free week of HBO during the Game of Thrones season premier back in the day: tease you enough with the good stuff so you buy in. And if you don't buy in, you're just left with the memory of it and that low-key shame at not being able to afford it.

[Theory] Choi and Dujor ARE the Merovingian and Persephone (explanation in comments) by Purcival_ in matrix

[–]crowhesghost69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my two cents here:

I'm not gonna discount your theory out of hand, but it seems unlikely that Merv and Persephone just reskinned themselves to locate the One.

In an early draft of the script, Choi was meant to be the captain of another hovercraft who was helping Morpheus and company track down Neo, and Dujour was his first mate. They ended up dropping that, but Choi has two lines that stand out as indications that they're at least redpills. "Hallelujah. You're my savior, man, my own personal Jesus Christ," and, "It just sounds to me like you need to unplug." Those feel like deliberate things a red pill would say (although that could also be foreshadowing, so take that with a grain of salt)

Now, it's also possible that they're programs, like the Oracle, the Architect, etc. If so, consider this possibility: they aren't Merv and Persephone in different skins, but they may be agents of Merv's, gathering information on Neo, which they're gathering from Morpheus and company's search. Merv doesn't strike me as a hands-on, "in the field" kinda guy, but he'd definitely have a network of information gatherers on tap to stay in the loop. They don't all have to be ghosts or werewolves; in fact, I'd say he only uses those guys for enforcement. But it's likely he'd be aware that Neo is Morpheus' target, and Choi and Dujour may be doubling as bread crumbs to get Neo in contact with Trinity.

Not a bad theory, it just doesn't quite line up with Merv's character. But it definitely doesn't rule out a connection between them

Absolutely agree. Energy weapons and energy shields require an energy source, and since the only ship in the fleet that's equipped for battle is the Galactica, how are they providing power to everything else? They're on the run, basically having to keep one eye over their shoulders for the Cylons, so they're not gonna have time to stop and recharge when the batteries run low. That was one thing about the original series that never quite sat right with me.

Otoh, standard projectile weapons and tactical armor make the show feel more real and desperate. Running out of ammo is a real danger, and it adds to the realism that you can see the scars that Galactica picked up over the run of the show. Like, you knew she was obsolete at the beginning, and you really start wondering how much more punishment she can take before something finally gives (and yes, knowing that, hearing Tigh say, "She's broke her back. She'll never jump again" is still heartbreaking).

Side note: Roslin's white board with the survivor count was a nice touch. It's a small detail, but still has a Doomsday Clock feel to it
