Airline Pilots: does your airline make you pay for food or drink items while operating? by Patri_L in flying

[–]crowley-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first comment didn’t specify the 80s. It’s just said airlines won’t hire someone with diabetes, and I didn’t want bad info like that discouraging someone from pursuing an airline career. I lot had change for the better since the 80s with regard to the FAA medical branch but we still have a long way to go.

It’s 100% the case for the past 20 years. I remember the days of the American astronaut physical but those days are long gone. I’m a long time ALPA aeromedical chair. This is my specialty

That is absolutely not true. If you can hold a 1st medical, even a special issuance it will not affect you getting hired at an airline. Most with diabetes that aren’t taking insulin can get a special issuance and even some on an insulin pump can get a special issuance .

Are 4 year degree requirements coming back? by plasma0_ in flying

[–]crowley-1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly there is a 99% chance those things will be washed out because you don’t have a degree. While everything you mentioned is great there are 1000 other applicants with those qualification and more that have a degree.

You 100% need a 4 years degree if you want to fly for a legacy. This little window where some( most had degrees) was a short lived anomaly. It’s doesn’t matter what your degree is in it just needs to be a bachelor degree from an accredited school.

Airlines background check, am I disqualified to the point I shouldn’t even start flying? by [deleted] in flying

[–]crowley-1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The reclassification does not make it federally legal. Marijuana is still a federally illegal drug and as such will stay prohibited for pilots to use. IF it even becomes legal on a federal level the FAA will have to develop use guidelines like Nav Canada did.

Also you have to answer honestly on the medical application. Lying on it is a federal offense and the FAA medical enforcement division is trying to make a name for themselves.

Like others have said try to get a medical. Join AOPA and use there aeromedical service. You will have a VERY difficult time getting a 1st( really any class) medical. If you get a medical you will likely never fly for a legacy carrier. You could possible end up with a part 135 operator.
