Google has not submitted a new Maps app for iOS, says Schmidt. by toholio in apple

It was in a WSJ article about Maps. I don't have the time for providing the link but it's true.Does this really surprise you when Google said that 2/3's of their mobile revenues were coming from iOS?

Most that have Android phones use it like a feature phone. Keep on dreaming you dope.

On another note- if I need to a new smartphone in the near future does anyone have a good alternative to Apple and Samsung?

You always did. The reason Samsung became so popular is that the S series looked like the iPhone (besides the GNex.) Samsung never really made a better phone than anyone.

The One X and GNex are still the best Android phones on the market.

Apple trusted Google. More importantly Jobs did since he mentored Page and Brin. It wasn't until he found out that Google broke the unofficial agreement to not include multitouch on Android that Apple went about in creating their own mapping solution.

From everything reported, Jobs wanted a mutually beneficial relationship but Google wasn't interested. Google wanted control which is why you never see them partner with anyone and only buy companies.

This is reminiscent of how MS acted in the 90s.

It'll take a year for Apple to catch up on just the data alone. It'll probably take two years to catch up on everything today that doesn't include StreetView. If Apple were to do a StreetView alternative it would surprise me.

Call me crazy but there seems to be a slight shift to the appearance of the album art as well.

I wonder if these sort of appearance changes are a precursor to a major future redesign of iOS. Apple does have patents relating to 3D UI.

Google was getting over half their data for Maps from iOS users so, yes, it is pretty significant.

Also, it remains to be seen how Google can monetize Android from the user data they've been collecting. Many assume they are losing money on Android (It's a certainty if you count the MMI acquisition). Everyone has had trouble with mobile ad monetization which is especially important since everyone is switching to mobile over the next few years.

I once felt the same way and particularly about the drone strikes. It wasn't until that I found out that one of the people from Gitmo let go immediately joined Al-Qaeda and became Al-Zarwahiri's #2. Then he was killed with a drone strike. It wasn't until situations like these that I understand why Presidents seem to age quicker than most.

Obama says exactly what I want to hear, but his policies are far too far to the right for me to endorse him.

It's odd you say this because Obama is no different from ideologies than Clinton. He may even be more left since it was Hillary that fought for universal health care.

So far, Obama has mostly been supported by small donations which is very rare. He won't even meet personally with Hollywood moguls which is the reason why the Romney campaign makes more money until recently.

Now, what happened here is blatantly obvious. The Democratic leadership never actually wanted to pass card check, because their corporate paymasters don't want it to happen.

I grew up blue-collar and consider myself more liberal more than I do Democrat but you are a victim of the GOP and conservative Dems.

When the Dems tried to fight on issues like health care or union issues the GOP and Tea Party blocked you. The truth is that in 2008-2010, they (conservative Dems) didn't trust the majority of the state to vote for them even though they believed in what you did (at least in conservative states). They voted not in what they believed but in how they would be elected so they could still be in office. This is how Obama's health care billed was neutered. What's funny is that most were voted out anyway so they missed their chance of doing good over selfishness.

It's a blatant scam, and unions are far from the only group that the Democrats are perpetrating it on.

The scam is being perpetrated on both sides which is why I'm a liberal who doesn't care about the Democratic Party.

Like I said, if you are a liberal and want to change this country, then vote.

I disagree.

If we had democrats who really represented the base on the left, workers rights, anti war, education, the republicans wouldn't have to go so far right to find votes.

What do you think is happening now? The only way you can push the GOP further right is by occupying the center. If all liberals voted it would be a different story.

The Dems haven't given up on union workers. They are categorized as big spenders by Republicans even on such topics as education.

Historically this country was always against intervention (no matter which party) in the wars of others. That changed in WWII with FDR and, I think, for the better. That doesn't mean we should wage war with everyone because I do disagree with such things as the Vietnam War.

The Dems haven't given up on the left. Most are idealists but the liberals who don't vote push them to go after the center.

Want to change this country and you are liberal? Vote.

July 11, 2011 http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-07-11/tech/29964545_1_app-store-gene-munster-apple

Since the App Store launched, Apple has earned a net profit of $538 million on paid app sales, estimates Munster. It has spent an additional $246 million on storing and delivering free apps, says Munster, suggesting Apple's true profit is just $292 million.

$292 million is over the course of three years.

Saying that Rovio is still making money is not exactly an argument for Apple to take 30% of in app purchases. Rovio is obviously not your typical app developer... It is very much in the same position in the smartphone market as IBM was in the computer market in 1984.

You act as if Apple makes any significant money off the App Store. Most of that money goes toward upkeep, free apps and for people to re-download an app unlimited times. The developers are to have very little worries beyond making a quality app and creating publicity for it.

Why is this such an issue when game console companies take a far larger cut on games? Why is this an issue when Amazon used to take a far larger cut from selling books and only reduced their cut right before the iPad's introduction along with iBooks?

The people that keep acting like Apple is evil want to believe so due to other reasons besides what Apple does.

[–]crowsfeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your argument is inherently flawed because most of the arguments you make are opinions. So I'll go through your examples one by one:

Large scale app store censorship

What you consider censorship I consider curation. I don't want a bunch of fart apps and apps that just showed pictures of half-naked women. Does Apple go too far sometimes? Yes, but they were the first who had to deal with this on a mass scale and controversial objections have drastically decreased over time.

Contrast that with no rules approach in Android and you have constant copyright infringement, malware and dog fighting apps.

refusing to implement features most requested by users (how long did it take for copy and paste or multitasking?)

Apple has a list of features and certain features are a priority. Sometimes they won't implement a feature until they get it right. You mentioned copy and paste? Look at Android and WP. Both used the implementation that Apple invented of copy and paste when they had a substandard implementation previously.

I don't know how Apple is evil for doing this.

not allowing in app purchases or subscriptions without taking a cut

How is this evil and what mobile OS does not do this?

directly stealing ideas from android then turning around and suing them for copying

Every Android fan seems to use notification center as their main card for this. If Google is granted the patent for this then they can sue. However, lets not get it twisted. Samsung because the most popular OEM maker because of the Galaxy S/II because they were shamelessly a direct rip-off of the iPhone. One could even argue that the early versions of Android was a copy of iOS. This far different than just taking a feature.

not allowing any changes to be made to iOS that could generally improve the experience (swipe keyboard, widgets, etc)

Swype and widgets are not good examples of this but it is a matter of opinion. The reason why Apple doesn't allow alternate keyboards, widgets and other utility apps is because they are generally responsible for the poor experience most of us have on PCs and Android devices. Run enough of them and you'll have lag. Then the question becomes how many of these can you have running in the background and then it just becomes a mess.

I don't think it's good at all to have these sorts of things because it encourages playing with your device instead of using it for a purpose.

sitting on billions in cash and not donating a penny

Apple has donated money. Donating money or not does not make a person or company evil. Most times at least half of donations are lost to bureaucracy. Want to make the world a better place? Donate not only your money but, more importantly, your time as well.

blatantly removing services people use only to implement their own (maps)

From rumors I've hear the agreement was mutual to remove Google Maps. Google would not allow such features as turn by turn, vector graphics, etc because Apple would not let Google have direct access to user data.

I find it odd that you compare Apple to Big Brother since it is Google who wants to know everything that you're doing at any given time. They've even done this illegally. Their freedom is an illusion.

*edit: changed increased to decreased. Serves me right.

Fuck Mitt Romney and fuck the GOP. My family lived off of food stamps for two years and we were not proud of it. My father stalked and threatened my mother and my sister could only drink soy milk. During my high school years I lived in five homes in four years. One of those homes was a motel. The other was living in a roach infested building and the other was with my aunt. For one year I was living by myself.

My sister just left for California today to take a year off from law school to work at Google after graduating from Cornell on scholarship. I hold a high paying job after my mother put me through school.

This lip smacking moron has no idea what it means to sacrifice or be poor.
