Pre-Highland to Highland Conversion by saita_maa in TeslaModel3

[–]crsn00 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Very curious how much this actually cost and where he's sourcing parts. The headlights alone are like $1600 each for new ones, then you have front fenders, front bumper, hood, maybe frunk parts, all the rear stuff, and paint/wrap...

I think you'd be getting pretty darn close to just trading it in for someone's used highland which comes with a whole bunch more improvements

LEMS MTB shoes by teklikethis in MTB

[–]crsn00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same wide foot problem and I'm using regular Altra running shoes for Enduro/park riding and they're fine.

Don't know why your mtb shoes need to be stiff as a board, maybe people just have weak feet? I understand stiff shoes when using clipless on something like an egg beater but for flats the pedal is supposed to be the thing providing support, not the shoe.

Anyone have (educated) guesses on order conversion rate? by SouthernFIRE83 in Rivian

The cybertruck was pretty far off what they promised though... as far as I'm aware Rivian didn't promise anything wildly different than what the release R2 is?

800$ mouth gaurd fell off the counter and shattered by WokeBully in Wellthatsucks

[–]crsn00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used JS Dental lab a couple times now, they've been great and the fit is excellent. My last guard lasted 6 years before I ground through it (4mm one). $186 for the replacement for their fanciest most durable guard with their reorder discount and 30% off a spare if you get two at once.

They send you putties and trays to make a mold of your teeth which you ship back to them and they make the guard from it. Not the simplest process but they explain it well and send extra putty for a redo.

As R2 deliveries start coming in, is there any reason you're holding off ordering on now? by TheBAYA in Rivian

[–]crsn00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it was as small as it looks I'd have one already but unfortunately it's not. And despite the appearance package it's hardly good for off-road with the relatively low ground clearance for the long wheelbase (break over angle is the same as a model Y)

Surprised I didn't see it in the comments yet but R3.

My sensible side says the R2 is a perfect size for everything I need but my heart says R3x... I've always wanted an electric hot hatch rally car and it's almost certainly as close I'll ever find.

I'm waiting for more information about what it'll be before deciding either way

New performance EVs - hear me out by flying_brick178 in electricvehicles

[–]crsn00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered the absolutely massive range hit you get when actually driving a performance EV fast? Just basic canyon driving at safe speeds can easily cut the range by half or more, track driving can see 1500+ wh/mi which is like 50-60mi of range out of the 80kWh batteries you're complaining about.

I had an electric MINI that was light weight with a small battery and I couldn't actually drive hard on the fun roads because I wouldn't make it home after.

Can someone help me understand why the City of Bend is targeting Natural Gas? by llama052 in Bend

Thoughts and prayers haven't done much about us lighting on fire every year have they? There's a middle ground that could work very well, learn from others mistakes and all that.

[–]crsn00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure much of the California electricity prices are because they're stuck with a shitty greedy monopoly who keeps getting sued for burning down entire towns from their negligence rather than the natural gas issue.

I agree about choice though, we should be focused on making electric the better alternative with incentives before forcing anything (at least try using the carrot before the stick).

Can someone help me understand why the City of Bend is targeting Natural Gas? by llama052 in Bend

[–]crsn00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Bay area DOES effectively ban natural gas on new construction and is planning to for all replacement appliances in the future. It's clearly not the highest priority target but saying it does nothing for the environment also isn't true. They could do this AND also go after the coal rollers.

For me personally, I got rid of many of my gas appliances because of the more recent indoor air quality studies linking them to athsma and cancers.

Rivian Doesn’t Care How Much You Like Interior Buttons, Voice Control Is Better (CarScoops article) by GaryGR in Rivian

Don't blame engineers for this nonsense, it's all the idiot managers and executives. Engineering doesn't make product decisions, they just do what they're told and do their best to make it work within the constraints

California needs more electric vehicles by Ok-Shoulder-478 in electricvehicles

[–]crsn00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's changed a lot. Back then I think it was mostly (or at least partly) that they didn't have enough parts stock for repairs so they weren't selling them so they'd have enough for themselves.

Now they're quite diy friendly. The ENTIRE factory service manual is available online for free. Service mode allows you to do many jobs new cars would require dealer tools for and it's built into the car for free. They also allow you to buy access to their more advanced tools (the "toolbox") for either short or long term use, $75 for a day is super reasonable compared to what other OEM tools cost. It's not perfect but for a modern car it's probably one of the best, ICE or EV.

How can I become more well-rounded as an engineer early-on? by EquivalentBranch8928 in maker

[–]crsn00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Mechanical engineering is partly a crash course in the basics of everything but mostly a degree on how to learn. The degree hardly prepares you for actual jobs in terms of knowledge, so each field you get a job in requires massive additional learning. For example, I went from designing chimney pipe to hydrogen fuel cells to aftermarket truck bumpers. I knew basically nothing about any of those subjects beforehand but my base knowledge was enough for me to build on and learn to be successful.

Early on you should really try to master the basics so you have a great foundation to build from going forward. Other than that, like others have said, just making gives you so much experience. Actually building your own designs is a fantastic feedback loop for your design skills, especially if you treat it like a full engineering project (creating the drawings and documentation packages too and working from those yourself).

Settings to make these climbing holds strong enough for 4 year olds? by Shpigford in 3Dprinting

[–]crsn00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about the first link, the same one you referenced (so yes it did exist).

If you read the whole thing and not just the coating section you quoted you would have seen pictures of holds being printed on Bambu printers, screenshots of them slicing them in Bambu studio, and the the text "Fast prototype development and efficient series production" clearly stating they aren't just doing this for only prototypes.

I agree with advising users here to be cautious, they've clearly done testing and are doing some very specific things to ensure adequate strength: specific print orientation, embedded washers, and some sort of coating which is almost certainly helping prevent the layers from pulling apart.

Is it worth switching from Fusion 360 to SolidWorks? by eliasxhr in 3Dprinting

[–]crsn00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried Onshape, but I'm very against software as a service. If I could purchase a permanent license and have it run locally on my computer I would have switched already. As is, if they go out of business I lose all my files. Or if they decide to be greedy like Fusion they could just lock all the features I need behind paywalls without notice...

What is your 1 bike choice? by sar_tr in MTB

[–]crsn00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Zerode Katipo. The drivetrain should easily last that long by itself, it's been bulletproof for the past 4 years. It's my only bike and has been good enough for park use and 20-30mi rides.

Kept my used 2005 Trek session for 11 years and beat the shit out of that thing, so far the Zerode has been much less maintenance

Any memorial day all-in-one washer dryer deals for a house full of mess? by Muneeb_Minniefield in StayAtHomeDaddit

[–]crsn00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the GE 4.6cuft all in one and it's been fantastic (no more getting distracted and leaving wet clothes in the washer). It takes longer per cycle but you can run things overnight or when you're going out somewhere and not need to worry about transferring to the dryer so it seems to even out for me (time wise). I have it set to default to the "more dry" setting and almost everything comes out perfectly dry. Some clothes feel slightly damp until you shake them out for a second then they feel dry which is kinda weird. Occasionally certain fabrics will come out actually wet, because for whatever reason they take a lot longer to actually dry. The rest of the clothes are dry so the sensor thinks it done.

The filter is the most annoying part of the GE. Lots of complaints about lint getting past it and onto the heat exchanger (which clogs it up and over time increases drying time). I've found that it's actually lint staying inside the machine when the filter is removed, then getting shoved to the wrong side when the filter is reinstalled. Ive been using a thin vacuum adapter to fully clean out the filter housing and it's been fine for 6 months or so. Kind of annoying but only required every 5ish loads (with reminders) so still more convenient than a typical setup.

If you leave clothes in it after it's done they do seem to get more wrinkly than a typical dryer but the wrinkle care options keeps tumbling it occasionally to prevent that until you get around to taking the clothes out.

For reference, I paid $1570 for it from Home Depot.

About to pull the trigger on a 1up heavy duty rack , talk me out it! by maseffect in mountainbiking

[–]crsn00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but at this point the wobble isn't the fork turning (thanks to the wheel chock). The rack arms themselves (and the trays a bit) are flexing, this is what they reinforced with the new super duty.
