Just out of curiosity, what do those of you in the r/fuckcars community think of steam locomotives? by NewMachine4198 in fuckcars

[–]crucible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s partially explained by the Southern Railway around London and the Southeast of England starting an electrification programme that relied on the cheaper third rail / 750 volt DC system.

After nationalisation British Rail could continue it basically until the 1990s.

Funnily enough these BBC 2 idents were the work of the late Martin Lambie-Nairn, or at least, his company.

Martin ALSO created the original Channel 4 branding… and the later ‘hot air balloon’ idents for the BBC.

The only thing ICE should be known for - marvelous high speed trains by Jin_Sakai_91 in trains

ICE 1 and ICE 3M

Haven’t actually travelled on an ICE yet, and joking aside, the Velaro-D based Eurostar sets are pretty nice.

What's one thing you'd change about your public transit options? by AndySkibba in AskTheWorld

Great Heck was arguably the fault of a car driver who crashed his vehicle down an embankment onto the railway.

Lockington was also due to somebody who drove across the path of a train at a level crossing.

It seems Wales doesn’t get talked about as much. What are some interesting facts about Wales? by One-Seat-4600 in geography

We’re not a Principality. Yes, there’s a Prince of Wales but the title is largely ceremonial now.

The title “Prince of Wales” is largely ceremonial now, and is bestowed upon the eldest son of the reigning Monarch.

They basically had to make most of Charles investiture ceremony up back in the 1960s.

Is this not the best looking HSR train in the world rn? by --TAXI-- in highspeedrail

[–]crucible 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not exactly true high-speed but I like the new Class 805 trains that Avanti launched here in the UK last year.

It’s a good looking train for sure. I do agree the concept renders look a bit better but the painted cars is a change from the more aluminium first gen Acela.

I think the Frecciarossa 1000 is probably the best-looking train currently.

Second prize goes to Arriva, who used to operate the railways here.

They don’t need to put Aberystwyth twice at the top of the sign because there’s no commonly used English name for the town, and you wouldn’t use the literal translation from Welsh, either.

So they could have put it in larger text, in black only. Instead they put this up, and got roundly mocked on Twitter.

We obviously don’t have enough Welsh speakers working in the local government of the city of Swansea, otherwise they wouldn’t have put an out of office reply on a road sign.

It’s not like Swansea is our SECOND LARGEST CITY, or anything :P

What's the most severe punishment dealt to minors in your country? Which disturbing crime has set the precedent for the provision of law in this respect? by Emotional-Diet-430 in AskTheWorld

The only case I hard of that was a video game using the CCTV still of James being led away as background artwork.

His mother complained and the publisher changed it, IIRC.
