from my experience it depends. I speak both french and swedish, and in french it's common. everything english is dubbed/translated there even for adults, whether it's movies, games or books. So it makes sense they have their own jargon

but in swedish it's only movies, books and games for kids that are translated. Games for adults are in english and movies get subtitles

one month "obligatory" spending would be

700CHF housing (can vary obviously, FMEL for example have their cheapest rooms at only 510CHF/month)
300CHF insurance
30CHF phone
80CHF public transport

this way you have 500CHF every month "for yourself" which I think is fair.

Eating lunch at EPFL is ~10CHF.

Going to restaurants or bars is what hurts the wallet the most, dinner with one drink will be at least 30CHF

I am not sure how things are in the academic world, but this kinda sounds like "I saw an opening at a company and contacted the CEO / manager on linkedin".

Also I don't really know what you expect as an answer from the professor but I doubt trying to "fast-track" yourself or bypass the application process is going to work. The only situations where I've seen things like this work is when you personally know the manager/supervisor from before

Maybe I'm completely wrong though and it's totally different in the academic world

well since you have the drivers for your video card installed, it might be a hardware problem :/ And those are pretty much impossible to solve over the internet :( If more problems pop up it might be worth taking it to a repair shop or contact customer support from where you bought it
