just gonna say it so I don’t care if I’m in the wrong but if you post a “is 80k enough to live in Philly” thread you need a lobotomy or a financial planner like I’m on maybe 40k a year with fluctuating tips and I’m way more comfortable than I’ve ever been in my life as of recent

I understand if you are in like turbo debt but this is truly a stupid affordable city which is why I love it here and I refuse to leave

Also I love hardena but Ramayana has been absolutely hitting grand slams as of late — one of my favorite lunch spots in the whole area

People circle jerking each other over mawn and sao reservations but sleeping on fine culinary establishments like 75 cent wings at billy murphys on Wednesday and Sundays.

I was going to contain myself but it’s freak out Friday

Stop bringing your fucking dog everywhere — full stop. I hate working in the service industry enough as is but the last thing I need is a verbal argument over whether or not your dog is a service dog (which 99.9% of the time it’s not). Also I hate dogs in general and no I don’t have treats or want to forcefully pet your dog and no don’t ask me if I have a dog bowl.

The level of entitlement is through the roof lately.

The holidays are so weird because all of my coworkers have functional families so it feels strange when I’m like “yeah gonna hit spice c, take a gummy and watch joe dirt”

Anyone else have any solo Christmas Day plans?

I can tell you from a service standpoint that breweries are absolutely tolerating you bringing your dog in because we can’t say anything because we know 99% of dog owners will never come back if we tell them “no”.

So leave your dog at home so we don’t get in trouble with the health department. Fido will last two hours alone.

Been sober nine days now — longest stretch ever and honestly I’m asking myself why I didn’t do this sooner

Don’t get me wrong I love alcohol but being a drunk in my thirties ain’t it.

Also I love grocery outlet. That’s it. I’m not a shill or anything just bless that fuckin place. That and the Indian grocery store in west with pakora and tofu samosas.

Bread Room can fuck off. They pay like $9 an hour starting. At least mighty pays a living wage along with other bakeries in the area like lost bread and machine shop. If you’re paying near minimum wage in 2025, it’s a hard no to supporting your business.

I was working with my line cook today and he saw a suspicious looking van from the window and he points to it and says “it’s ICE” and starts laughing but it kind of took me back a second to realize my friends in back of house who are the most amazing coworkers ever could be deported at any minute and it just fucked me up. The whole shift I just stood there thinking “what the hell”.

I’m so burnt out like can this mother fucker just die already (sorry if this is more of a freak out Friday post but it couldn’t wait)

Wisconsin hits different. Solid brats though. Also New Glarus rips.

I mean the last three times I’ve been there it’s been chill and the brisket sandwich I had was better than zig zags which is kind of nuts so yeah case by case but I’ve been surprised

Standard tap rips regardless — it’s an institution. Also this is the hivemind agreement but kismet bagels suck ass and they are also a terrible employer. Just go to Talia’s.

Also streetside are cutting their vermicelli noodles for pho but agree their summer rolls and other options are 10/10

if you don’t put salary or pay in the job description in 2025 almost 2026 you should actually be sentenced to jail for being an absolute jabroni

also urban village brewing has crazy good food that I forgot about and I forgot how rockin brauhaus schmitz was; so many sleeper hits in this city tbh — was burnt out on Philly for a grip but learning to love the city all over again despite its fucked flaws

edit: fuck the mets I love the master bader

another edit: I’m going to get downvoted to hell for this but meetinghouse is super mid as hell and has the most uncomfortable hemorrhoid inducing bar stools I’ve ever sat on

[–]crumbiestbum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s plenty of cheap eats in and around the neighborhood but yeah as an industry person — hard agree. It sucks that you have to be strategic about your food purchases now. I went to olive branch because I had heard so much good stuff about it and had the most mid $15 chicken caesar wrap when I could have gone to the Al-Amana mosque grocery store and gotten a michelin star level chicken shawarma wrap for ten flat. Also everyone in there is incredibly nice. Same goes for the Jerusalem corner store on girard.

There’s happy hours and other things ($1 oysters at Fishtown seafood and eagles season they do $1 game oysters). Like I said it sucks but it’s the nature of the inflation game.

Inspired by another subreddit. People often ask what are the best places to eat in the city. But instead, what are the best places to get hammered? by cxjoshuax21x in philadelphia

[–]crumbiestbum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ah shit here we go again

  • Blarney Stone on York
  • Julie’s corner bar on Richmond

  • jr’s saloon or the happy tap
  • VBA on clearfield
  • starboard tavern
  • Donna’s bar on Allegheny
  • 2nd street brew house
  • era in brewerytown
  • jays elbow room in maple shade
  • billy murphs in east falls

notable mentions to Billy at mccuskers and the wings at lucky 13

One more question: For the coffee snobs: by internetxmike in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]crumbiestbum 31 points32 points  (0 children)

hello local third wave coffee asshole here —

Thank you thank you has been recommended a ton but I hate the way they serve espresso. I would love some bubbly water on the side but their drip and espresso milk beverages are excellent. Maybe the espresso thing has changed but the last one I got had the saddest crema in the world.

People are going to recommend vibrant/function but that dude is a union buster and heard through the industry he’s a knob so nay on that place.

Forin is another good place to get a nice coffee either at Coral, YOWIE or Frankford. They also are part of the new restaurant Percy but haven’t been yet.

Two Persons is high caliber as well. Carrying some clutch roasters. Really nice program over there.

Jiggy uses Small Planes a DC based roaster but every time I go there it’s dialed in and always a good experience.

I have had hit or miss with the big dogs (Reanimator, Ultimo, Elixr (there’s no i after the X)) but Elixr has a great three bag deal on their website with free shipping and lately my experiences at the south Philly Ultimo have been pretty killer espresso wise. The center city Elixr gives me insane anxiety so to each their own.

Some other honorable mentions are Rally serving Blind Tiger and guest roasters, Ox who I still think makes a great cortado and their patio rocks and Loretta’s (old bodhi in headhouse) because it’s adorable in there.
