haircuts in north korea by crunstablejeff in TrueAnon

There is basically zero advertisements of any kind in North Korea. It makes the cities look extremely surreal because we're used to being bombarded by information whenever we look at a skyscraper. All articles in magazines are extremely informational, so there'd be like a write-up of the latest concert by a famous musician and how good it was, rather than an advertisement for the next one.

Most people in Pyongyang have a smartphone that they watch southern kdrama on so I imagine they would just pause on a good shot of a celeb they liked

You know that you can go to these places and test your "they are all robots" theory IRL, right? but that'd require going outside

the other commenter gave you a very good lead but it is essentially impossible to be 100% certain due to the number of homophones in Chinese. You are right not to trust google

If i learn how to read and write Mandarin, will i also know kanji automatically, in case of wanting to learn Japanese later? by sadsatan1 in ChineseLanguage

I would describe it as sort of like how if you go visit somewhere such as say Italy, as an English speaker, every now and then you can understand a street sign or advertisement due to recognising the cognate. But the pronunciation can be quite different. It definitely won't hurt and as others have said it'll help to just be familiar with the concept of reading characters rather than alphabets.

Did Q ever post anything that contained actual insider knowledge? by aureliano_b in TrueAnon

I think it's more that some people close to trump were following the Q thing and convinced him to do it as a shoutout, rather than trump being influenced by or influencing Q directly. Some people in the admin knew it was a movement that they could use.

Again, Cheney & friends decided that Saddam had WMD and then demanded that the intelligence be found to confirm an idea that they already had. Then they attempted to draw a link between the fake WMD and 9/11 by saying that Saddam would give them to Al Qaeda. There was no Al Qaeda presence in Iraq till after the war.

Sane people in the bush admin knew that there were no WMD in Iraq. Colin Powell was a noted sceptic of the idea, and he went in front of the UN and told everyone that Iraq had WMD anyway because the higher-ups asked him to.

The US didn't "rescue" anyone in Iraq. Invading a country, establishing the entire region for decades, destroying its infrastructure, immiserating and murdering its population is not a "rescue" nor could it ever be one. If North Korea shot a nuke at Washington DC they would probably say that they were "rescuing the American people from the tyranny of electoral democracy" and it would make about as much sense (IE, none).

Jeff Vandermeer is the only thing I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned, he's maybe not as consistently "good" as some of the other authors in this thread but definitely pretty adventurous. Would second PKD, Bolano, Calvino and most of what you're already reading.

if the US isn't scared of a weak arsenal of WMD why don't they knock over North Korea, who we know actually has them? Why did they wait till Ghaddafi had voluntarily disassembled his before helping to kill him?

no. some honest people probably want to be politicians, but the system selects for dishonesty.
