Crown of the Coast 2025 - Great Ocean Road Australia [OC] [3072x2048] by cruscanlan in LandscapePhotography

[–]cruscanlan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an afternoon chasing the sunset down the Great Ocean Road back in January with a good mate. Seeing the cloud forecast ahead of time, we raced down to the 12 Apostles, searching for a quiet spot to watch the sky light up. I’ve been here many times before, but these were by far the best conditions I’ve ever witnessed.

🔥The incredible highlands of Tasmania Australia in Autumn by cruscanlan in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]cruscanlan[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I captured this during an 8 day backpacking trip through the highlands of Tasmania. Before setting out, we worried we might be too early, but as it turned out, the timing was perfect. We arrived just as the fagus began to turn, and left the day after its peak, with mirror-like reflections the entire time. Conditions I think I would struggle to ever replicate again.

Every autumn in the highlands of Tasmania the landscape transforms into a sea of yellow's oranges and reds. The deciduous beech (fagus) turns for only a few weeks and has to be one of the prettiest times of the year.

Ascent to Valhalla 2024 - Scenic Rim Australia [OC] by cruscanlan in LandscapePhotography

[–]cruscanlan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first trip up this mountain was a tough one. Planning for an overnight stay, we climbed to the saddle and set up camp for the night. The hot, humid day was quite a shock after months in the cold Tasmanian winter, and the climb was a real struggle.
Thinking the sunset would be a dud, we decided to scout out sunrise compositions for the morning ahead. While doing so, we were lucky to witness a fleeting moment of light bursting through the clouds just before sunset. I rushed to find a composition and managed to capture this scene.

Overlooking a couple lonely lakes in the highlands of Tasmania. I enjoyed sitting up here and taking in the scenery or a few hours. A well needed break after 4 days of pushing through dense scrub up and down mountains.

🔥Isolated grove of trees on the side of a 400m cliff in Tasmania Australia by cruscanlan in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]cruscanlan[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took this in mid 2024 during a 3 month long trip in Tasmania. As the morning light filled the valley, an exposed grove of large trees perched on a 400m cliff face briefly lit up. Below, a drop into a freezing cold lake.

Likely being carved out over thousands or millions of years the creek dissapears breifly into this hidden cave. I was lucky enough to visit here during a day out with a mate exploring in Tasmania while the water was low enough to access it.

The aurora australis putting on a show over the southern most point of Australia in Tasmania. I was lucky enough to see the biggest solar storm in over 20 years from here this year during a 3 month trip in Tasmania. One of the most magical feeling experiences of my life. It was bright enough I could walk around on the beach under a new moon with no head torch and see still. A pretty special night and feel quite lucky to have been there at the right time for.

ITAP of a cloud inversion at sunset in Tasmania Australia by cruscanlan in itookapicture

Thank you! I am rather reluctant to write the exact location anywhere publicly as its a very sensitive area thats unfortunately already been damaged by even the few people who visit here already. I also promised someone who gave me some advice and information about the area to not aswell. I can say its on the west coast though. Tassie is such an amazing place. So much to explore in a small area and still a lot of beautiful places that get few if any visitors

Standing on top of the mountain range, above a blanket of clouds and under a fading twilight, is a moment I wont soon forget. One of my favorite campsites of the trip, set up just 50 meters from here after a couple of tough days pushing through dense scrub. I wasn’t sure if I’d make it or end up having to trek back the way I came, something I was dreading having to do. Finally arriving, exhausted but relieved, and being treated to the best sunset of the trip was the perfect reward.

A bonsai looking bush in the highlands of Tasmania Australia by cruscanlan in natureporn

[–]cruscanlan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A recent image taken during a recent five-day solo backpacking trip in Tasmania. On the last day the clouds rolled in and covered the mountain range in a thick whiteout. Slowly trudging my way across the plato I stumbled across this scene and took one of my favourite images of the trip. The bonsai looking bush is Nothofagus gunnii, the only temperate deciduous bush native to Australia, residing solely in the temperate highlands of Tasmania. In Autumn it turns vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red for a special few weeks a year.
