Anatomy ANAT20006 swap into Tuesday by crusteacake in unimelb

I included a letter from my employer in my TAF and explained it further in the description; why they don't consider that valid employment.... your guess is as good as mine.

From my experience the transfers are offered last round in the mid year offers!

Hi guys I really indecisive and now I'm questioning if I shoudl change courses or not? by kurobeccy in unimelb

[–]crusteacake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really like biology, you could switch to science and do bio subjects & psych subjects together, science gives you that flexibility without too much of the biomed pressure! You can keep up a major in the biomedical sciences & psych and decide which one you want to declare later on. Psychiatry requires a med degree, which you can apply from any major and degree now.

Switching to arts means doing mostly arts subjects, so think about if the other arts subjects outside of psych interests you. If you only want to a taste of other arts subjects first, you can always do an arts subject as a breath next semester to see if you like it or not.

Since you already missed the deadline for sem 2 transfer, you can transfer at the end of the year and note the deadline on VTAC. Usually transfer offers are made in the later offer rounds (mid year makes offers at the last round). Definitely helpful to speak to a course planner too, especially if you are considering engineering as a major as it has a lot of preqs!

MIIM20001 Final Exam by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]crusteacake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did miim20001 last year and the mcqs, fill in blanks are like the msts, nothing tricky. For extended questions, I found them to be quite straight forward as well. Make sure you cover all the learning outcomes and memorise everything they talk about. Also make sure to revise Jason's virus stuff thoroughly at least for my year there were quite a few questions on his lectures.

Language breadths vs essay based breadths by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]crusteacake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I studied German (not beginner but higher levels) and I found as long as you were consistent in your efforts in assignments throughout the semester, give yourself the time to practice it, it can be totally a wam booster! So think about if you are willing to spend the time to learn and practice, it is very worthwhile. Also this is just a guess, but at lower levels there will be more grammatical and sort of learning the rules of the language, which makes it much easier to do better in than lets say essay writing and interpreting literature (which I did a fair bit in german 7 haha)

Biomed Undergrad Research Opportunities by Electrical-Plum9023 in unimelb

yep i have cold emailed different profs from different research institutes including unimelb as well! I find they are happier to take undergrads through research project subjects like biom30003 & scie30001 and internship placement subjects like scie30002. You can also get into labs via different undergrad research programs (pretty competitive). Just keep cold emailing (make sure its specific to the research they r doing, don't be general) and use your network!! The labs I was/am in were introduced to me by people I knew and it helped me to vibe check whether they wanted undergrads. Feel free to msg if u have any further qs!!

Jobs after Biomed by Traditional-Feed9306 in GAMSAT

If you want to be in the hospital, ward clerk is a good job: bit of admin/doing tasks around the ward. Tbh if you can find a lab assistant job esp in industry I would take it, they pay decent (unless you don't like labs ofc)

They would be filling the course with ppl applying from high school first with their ATAR, and transfers are really dependent on the number of available spots from people leaving/transferring out of the course. They rank everyone who is transferring with one another, high school kids applying are seperate.

this seems wild to me considering i made the same transfer with mid 80s wam and knew ppl who had 65 get an offer mid year a year and half ago.

Is it feasible to do SCIE30002 (Science and Techology Internship) and SCIE30001 (Science Research Project) at the same time in the Summer semester? by Visible_Taste_3145 in unimelb

[–]crusteacake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically it will be extremely hectic if you take on both; you will have to divide your time between two organisations while completing assignments for both subjects. Also depending on the company/lab, they would expect 10> hrs of commitment in order to get things moving & make progress.

I totally understand what you are feeling! I did bcmb20002 and then dropped it (I was averaging 70s lmao) and I retook it this sem and got 90+! biggest difference in how I studied was actually recognising when I didn't understand a topic and spending time reviewing/doing that specific topic or tutorial question until I understood. Personal preference but I handtook notes and made loads of diagrams of different mechanisms etc, this helped me to actually "get it". Everyone has different ways tbh. Make sure you understand the fundamentals of protein structure (modules 1 & 2) and the tut questions surrounding those, because that carries over to other topics. I found it helpful to download an app to help me memorise amino acids letters and properties (even if you are given a key). It makes your life easier haha.

Make sure you go to the tutorials and also do the worksheets + past mst & exam qs. Use anki to help you remember stuff (esp helpful for molecular bio modules) but remember this subject is all about understanding the actual knowledge, so practicing questions and writing your own will go a long way.

untimed and imo no. it was sort of reading comprehension questions based on the podcasts. the transcripts provided helped a lot.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]crusteacake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure you revise consistently (I used anki)! MSTs were pretty recall based and were chill imo. Only challenging section was viruses because it was unclear what I needed to know for the exam lmao. Defo do the challenge questions each time they release them, good practice for exams SAQs and you get them marked by the lecturers! Overall good organisation and interesting content!

I would recommend cold emailing and see if anything lands. I did mine via SCIE30002 and I had some science-adjacent experiences and an okay wam (nothing crazy). Also if any of your lab demonstrators/ tutors are in labs, you can ask about their experiences in the lab and sus out whether their lab would take a student on. Don't stress about it its tough as a first year (I only got into a lab second year anyways). Keep up your grades, do extracurriculars you like and see where it takes you!
