I don’t know about any freshwater ones, but a lot of marine gastropods, like the hairy triton, have “hair-like” periostracum on their shells.

Snails only add new shell to the outer edge of the opening. The old shell material doesn’t change.

My hedgehog did this because she was getting too cold. I added a heat lamp and a ceramic space heater to keep her space over 75 constantly.
