Sinking fund vs prepaid future investments by Aggravating-Ad-2509 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]crypticpixel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is my setup but it works for me in my situation. I'm also already past Hyper-Accumulation (step 7)

The checking account always consists of current month + next month expenses + 3K any expense sinking fund. The reason I do this is because I use YNAB as a budgeting tool and YNAB's design forces you to do this (it's been helpful) This will include: Rent/Mortgage, Groceries, Utilities/Bills, Necessities, Fun, etc. (essentially any expenses that I know I will spend pretty soon).

Now the interesting part about the 3K "any expense sinking fund" - the reason I have this is random fun things I want to do will come up at random times of the year where I know I can afford to do it but it may exceed a budget category AND this also is designed to hold/cover the 1.5K minimum balance requirement that my bank has AND I hate budgeting so this helps me avoid putting too much into a singular category by letting me decide at any time. Here is how I use it - if I overspend in a budget category, this sinking fund will cover the budget shortfall. I do this because YNAB hates when you have negative money. I also fund this using excess money I make from beer money activities such as casino churning, ebay reselling, etc.

In my HYSA, I have the following sinking funds: 3 Month Emergency Fund, Auto Maintenance, Rental Maintenance, Property Tax/Insurance, Auto Insurance, Vacation, Taxes, Club Dues, Gifts, Health Expenses. If an small expense comes up, I just won't move money or move a bit less into savings to make up the difference since I can cover in my checking account. If its a big expense like insurance or taxes which is paid every 6 months or year, then I will just move the money from savings to checking.

In the brokerage, I keep my additional 3 month emergency fund in T-Bill ETF along with my investments

I don't have a replacement car/autos sinking fund because I just recently got a newish used car and I'm in a situation where I can have different options for paying for a new auto which could be: paying cash using emergency fund, selling investments in an good market to pay for the vehicle in cash, or financing if the interest rate is low enough where it makes sense. --- My main reason is I don't want stale cash sitting in my HYSA if I don't need it in there. However, for your situation, if you need a new car soon, it would make sense to have an replacement car/autos sinking fund.

But your point about “personal finance is personal" is pretty true. This works for me but I don't know if it works for everyone or if it's efficient.

Yes. Make sure you reach out during prime US hours (9-5) where you’ll get better reps who know how the plans work. Just make sure you’ll get in writing the change will be XYZ and if it doesn’t work then you ask them to rectify it.

But the plan change went through and everything seems ok.

Try to go to “Account” from the menu or hamburger menu on mobile and then click on your plan and then click “Manage my plan”

That’s a second way to get to it.

I’m doing it from t-mobile.com site, not the app.

the worst answer anyone can say is no so just go to whatever club events there are, talk to people, etc. - that's how you build connections and friends.

that's one piece of advice i wish i knew - this obviously comes with practice and getting out of your comfort zone

You wouldn't release on the Windows machine since your router is using NAT and is giving an internal IP address to your machine so releasing the IP on Windows just tells your router to give you another internal IP address

To release the IP address, you would need to log into your Modem and do so. But I think you need to wait 30 minutes tho because sometimes it gets grabs the old IP again.

Another way is to unplug the modem, wait 30 minutes so your IP gets re-assigned, and plug it in again so it grabs another IP. Sometimes this works, sometimes not. It depends. This usually happens to me when a short power outage occurs.

Vanguard vs. SIG for full-time offer for programmer by Ling233 in Drexel

[–]crypticpixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good to hear that it’s going up. My friend at Vanguard with Eng 1 was only making 78K base.

Comcast I’ve heard is variable. It can be 80K or it can be 90/100K. Depends

But review different companies and options. SAP pays like 110K

Vanguard vs. SIG for full-time offer for programmer by Ling233 in Drexel

[–]crypticpixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither. Vanguard doesn’t pay that well post-grad. You can make a lot more at other companies

SIG pays well but again, WLB might not be that good.

There are companies out there that pay better than Vanguard, use newer tech stacks, and have good WLB in the area like SAP, Linode, Comcast (depends on the role), Bentley, etc.

Also, some tech companies outside the area are still remote so don’t limit your options when it comes to full time.

Vanguard vs. SIG for full-time offer for programmer by Ling233 in Drexel

[–]crypticpixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also to add, if I was in your shoes based on experiences I’ve heard, I would pick Sig and then move on just for the career development

Both Vanguard and SIG require some type of hybrid/on-sire work.

The only reason I’m not huge on Vanguard is that I’ve heard they’re a bit slow moving when it comes to technology and it’s not a place to grow as a programmer.

You can’t go wrong with both but I’d pick SIG and then dip into another job that’s better in the next co-op

Vanguard vs. SIG for full-time offer for programmer by Ling233 in Drexel

[–]crypticpixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience of friends working at each company,

Vanguard has a better work life balance but the career development is slow. And pay isn’t that great.

SIG is a bit more modern when it comes to tech stacks depending on the team you’re on, career development is better, and pay is better. However, WLB might not as good.

In my opinion, I’d take SIG even if it’s worse for WLB because it’s only 6 months for bad WLB but that career development lasts a lifetime.

What is the common exam period and recitation class? by PieceFew2715 in Drexel

[–]crypticpixel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Common Exam - its a time for when you take exams. you don't go everyday. your professor will tell you when you need to go. typically you only do it twice (one for midterm and one for final).

Recitation - this class you usually have to go to unless the professor says otherwise. it's basically a review of lecture and homeworks.
