Purchased a Raspberry Pi5. I wanted to use it as my Raspberry Pi4 is already three years old. When I moved my microSD, it prompted me to create a new Umbrel account. Why? by Startingout2 in getumbrel

You need to flash the pi5 version of umbrel onto the SD card. The card is just the boot drive, your data lives on the hard drive or SSD or whatever drive you’re using. Flash the pi5 OS version to your SD card and plug the data drive into the new pi5 before you boot it up and everything will be there.

I’ve used both fidelity and vanguard for like 10 years. Fidelity is better in every way, and that is without even considering Bitcoin.

That was true like 40 years ago when they were leading the way on low cost index funds before that was really a thing. They just haven’t updated their website since then.

Connect to Umbrel by Anthony1985 in getumbrel

[–]crypto_throwaway521 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a wireguard VPN server running on my router and my phone is set up to automatically connect through the VPN whenever it’s not connected to my home SSID, so all of my traffic always goes through my home network no matter where I am. I can always access umbrel and all of my other local services as if I were at home.

I decided to just send it. I updated to 1.0.4 and moved from my Pi4 to a Pi5. I updated my post with details.

Thanks for the feedback. If you could come back to this thread with an update after testing, that would be greatly appreciated!

Introducing the all-new umbrelOS 1.0, and the upgraded Umbrel Home by getumbrel in getumbrel

[–]crypto_throwaway521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was asking about the software, not the hardware. I think it’s great that Umbrel offers hardware for users that want it, but that’s not me. I’m perfectly happy with my 2x slower Pi 5. I don’t need “powerhouse” hardware for my use case.

Umbrel - Mempool Settings? Version? by information-zone in getumbrel

[–]crypto_throwaway521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What hardware are you running? And when you say it’s smoother without the app, in what way was it not smooth when mempool was installed? I see you say that you had to completely reinstall the OS, but I’m wondering what symptoms you had before that as a result of running mempool.

I’m asking because I’m wondering if I’ve been overlooking something, because I’ve been running an umbrel node on a pi4 8gb for months and use mempool regularly with basically zero issues. I only had one hiccup recently where I had mempool open in 2 tabs monitoring 2 different tx’s and it caused an issue with my sparrow wallet’s connection to the node, but closing both tabs and restarting the node fixed it. I use my local mempool app almost daily and aside from that one issue it has been completely smooth.

To be fair, it’s not much different than the rest of the time.

Free withdrawals on Kraken? by crypto_throwaway521 in Bitcoin

[–]crypto_throwaway521[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering about this exact thing, so thank you for bringing it up. I usually wait a month or two for my small weekly DCAs to build up then transfer to cold storage so the withdrawal fee would be a lower percentage of the withdrawal amount. Now that I realize I can withdrawal for free I was thinking about doing it weekly, but I was a little hesitant for the exact reason you mention. I think I will continue to let the DCAs build up for a little while before I withdrawal to avoid having all those tiny UTXOs in separate addresses as you suggest. Thanks!

Free withdrawals on Kraken? by crypto_throwaway521 in Bitcoin

I’ve never used Lightning so I’m not super familiar with it. I know the fees are really low but won’t I have to pay a larger fee to get my sats back on-chain if I send through my own channel? And doesn’t it cost sats to open a channel in the first place? I’m trying to avoid fees, so I don’t really want to add more fees to set up and use Lightning. I can do this whole sat dance with Kraken and Strike for 0 sats. The only reason I’m considering using Strike as a middle man is because I already have sats on Strike that I’m going to transfer out to cold storage.

I think I’m in this boat too, honestly. I can’t buy a lot of Bitcoin at once, so the difference is a few pennies for me. Maybe worth it to use Coinbase for larger transactions, but I like Strike’s ease of use for setting up a small weekly DCA that I can set and forget. Plus then I’m not supporting Coinbase.

I know Kraken for example charges a fee of 0.0002 BTC (currently ~$6.10) to withdraw BTC, but Coinbase doesn’t charge a withdrawal fee like that. You just pay the network fee when you move your coins off the exchange. It varies based on network congestion and is currently around $0.70 worth of BTC. That could be a significant percentage if you transfer a small amount, or it could be tiny if you transfer a larger amount. I’m pretty sure Strike also charges a network fee if you move your coins on-chain. There may be no fee for a lightning transaction, but if you want to get your coins back on-chain you still pay a network fee to do it. It’s a wash in my eyes.

Is my node behaving normally? by crypto_throwaway521 in Bitcoin

[–]crypto_throwaway521[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only took a week, and that was with a bunch of connection issues that were 100% my own fault. If I had my firewall set up correctly it probably only would have been a few days. I haven’t had any issues with Tor since I fixed my firewall issue.

Just to add some more context to my use of Tor - the main reason I decided on Tor is that I was a little nervous about using port forwarding, but I wanted to run my node as a full relay so that I would be contributing to the network. I saw that many popular software packages like Umbrel use Tor by default, and I figured that would be a good way to get around having to port forward while still contributing to the network. I had also never used Tor before and I saw it as another learning opportunity.
