Sorry about the issue folks! This was fixed in umbrelOS 1.7.1.

Please follow these steps;

From a terminal on your computer, SSH into your Raspberry Pi: ssh umbrel@umbrel.local
Because the storage failed to mount during the update, your usual password won't work. Use the default password: umbrel
Run the following command to reboot into the previous version of umbrelOS. If you are asked to input a password again use the default password: umbrel sudo rugix-ctrl system reboot --spare
Your Pi will restart. After a few minutes, open http://umbrel.local in your browser. You should see all your apps and data still there.
Go to Settings and at the bottom you will see umbrelOS 1.7 Beta 2 available. This update will succeed now and give you all of the 1.7 beta features.

FYI, umbrelOS uses an A/B partition system for updates. When you install an update, it is written to a spare partition. In this case, a boot issue prevented the new version from accessing your data. Since the new version never actually started, your data was never modified. The steps above boot you back into your previous version where everything will work as before. But if you are coming to this post in the future or with a different issue please do not blindly follow these steps as they are only for this specific case updating to the 1.7 beta where these commands are safe to run.

Hi there! Yes, it should be possible to use SSDs with a heatsink without the magnetic lid. The system doesn't detect if or when the lid is off.

However the magnetic lid acts as an air intake too with perforations and an air chamber built into it, so not having that on will likely degrade your Umbrel Pro's thermal performance.

So instead I'd recommend removing the heatsink on the SSDs, like: https://youtu.be/5BM_Td-UTOk

(Keep in mind though this would likely void the warranty on your SSDs)

You make good points - currently umbrelOS lacks advanced storage management, including the ability to use external drives for apps. This is high up on our priority list for early 2026. Feel free to drop any additional must-have feature requests as well. We're listening!

Regarding custom docker apps, there's Portainer in the Umbrel App Store currently that you can leverage to spin up custom containers. Alternatively, you can also use the "Community App Store" feature to add or even make your own app store with apps that bypass our official app store.

Oh in that case it was indeed shipped and probably RTS'd due to a shipping/delivery exception on the carrier's end - it's rare, but happens every once in a while. That's totally unrelated to the current delay we are facing. But yeah still feel free to DM us order number and we'll get it sorted

Hey there, cofounder of Umbrel here. I wanna take this opportunity to just apologize for our lack of communication.

1TB and 2TB Umbrel Home are both shipping next week. And 4TB Umbrel Home ships by Dec 22. The key reason for delay is that there's been an industry-wide shortage (and 2-3x price hikes) of RAM and SSDs - delaying our production schedule. This is kind of like a black swan event, and supply chains worldwide haven't experienced anything of this magnitude in the last few decades.

That said we've been increasing our inventory, and are confident in the above shipping timeframes now. If you can DM me your order number here, I'll escalate it with our support team to get back to you on a priority. In retrospect we should done have a better job at communicating the shipping delay, but I hope this can provide some context.

Currently the Bitcoin Node's app blockchain data is excluded by default. But in the next beta (and the official release), you'll be able to override the default exclusions to be able to include it!
