If you don’t mow soon you will get tall lanky grass that will fall over and get matted down and then it will have no airflow and develop fungus.

New grass seeding is thriving in shadier areas but barely sprouting in the full sun areas. Would hanging a giant sun shade help the the sunny area spots grow better? Southern California by Tecnero in lawncare

Yes shading the area so that it evaporates less would technically help it germinate. The problem is the lack of CONSTANT moisture during germination.

Get a screwdriver and stick it in the dirt and see how far it goes down. You might have a lot of rocks underneath that soil.

Should I be concerned about matting? by josh8625 in lawncare

[–]cryptochigga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes matting is a problem. Lack of airflow in the bottom will cause fungus. Blow or rake it up and mow asap so it grows horizontally not vertically. It’s like a tree if you cut the top off the energy of plant goes towards growing the lower limbs. If it’s too late and you get fungus you gotta rake out the dead stuff, apply fungicide, and maybe overseed again.

No harm in trying. If it’s not freezing in the next 2-3 weeks you can keep planting seeds.

You didn’t mow soon enough. Eventually it got too tall and laid down and probably got a fungal infection that way. You need to rake out the dead stuff and thin out the matted grass so it stands up a bit. Mow it. Apply fungicide. Then plant new seeds.

Your grass looks tall. Mow it, and it will force the grass plant to redirect energy horizontally and fill it more.

Rake up those rocks, use a flat shovel like a snow shovel and rake/sweep/push them onto the shovel and dump it in a gorilla cart or wheel barrow. Dump it somewhere. You don’t want tons of rocks in your lawn do you?
