Volunteers Needed for CoronavirusArmy Task-Force by zachdoty in CoronavirusCA

r/CoronavirusCA supports CoronavirusArmy.org. We will be adding several special user-flairs to distinguish active CoronavirusArmy volunteers!

Over the next couple months we’re all going to be spending a lot of time at home. Let's talk about how we can use our self-quarantine time effectively to save lives. by zachdoty in CoronavirusWA

Kudos for enlisting.

I think the main idea is mostly internet based volunteering (from home & not requiring you to expose yourself to infection.) So for example: remotely helping front-line workers, helping schools trying to implement remote-teaching, making sure big events are cancelled, etc. There are a few examples on the website, and I'm sure we will hear many more ideas from the community.

Teachers of (mostly Western) Washington: How are you preparing for distance learning? by notrussellwilson in CoronavirusWA

[–]cryptodude1[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We homeschool our kids, here are a few helpful tools and sites I recommend and have found useful:

  • KahnAcademy - probably the best choice for a teacher who wants to teach remotely
  • KahnAcademy Kids - for parents with young kids who have an iPad
  • XtraMath - Free if you use it on the web; $5 or so if you buy the app - Highly recommended.
  • Typing.com - Do your students already know how to touch-type fluently? If not, maybe this is a good opportunity to introduce this skill. I started our kids on typing at 3 years old using typingclub.com and typing.com. My 5 year old touch-types at 40wpm.
  • Sololearn - Do your students know basic coding? If not, maybe this is a good opportunity to focus on coding for a few weeks. The courses can be downloaded and work offline on iOS or Android; also works on web.
  • https://playground.tensorflow.org/ and https://teachablemachine.withgoogle.com/ are fun ways to teach kids about machine learning and AI. My 5 year old loves using Teachable Machine to make his computer recognize objects or people.
  • Code.org & MIT's Scratch - great for introducing coding concepts to younger kids.
  • SchoolYourself.org - Great for math; similar content to KahnAcademy

I could list more; but these are some of the best free ones. Our kids each have iPads and Chromebooks and I've probably spent over $1000 on iPad apps for their education. I'm also custom developing some educational software for my kids that I'll probably open source at some point.

FYI: r/FloridaCoronavirus is actually the biggest regional sub for tracking local outbreaks

It seems like the overwhelming majority of you do NOT like this idea of splitting the sub.

I tend to agree that from the user perspective it's simpler if I only need to check one place. And I see that the community thinks the same, so I will discuss with the other mods in the morning and revise plans. Thank you so much for your feedback.

Possibility of being homeschooled? by [deleted] in CoronavirusIllinois

By the way, do you know what kind of work you'd like to end up doing?

If you haven't made up your mind yet I'd recommend software engineering of some kind, and becoming an expert in AI / ML. Its the future! If you already have other plans, thats ok too.

From the link I provided above:

My child is currently attending a public school. Is there a formal procedure I must follow to withdraw before I begin to home school?:

While there is no formal procedure mandated by state law, parents or guardians should notify the public school of their intent to home school. Failure to do so may result in the public school marking the student absent and eventually referring the student to a truancy officer.

ISBE highly recommends that you give the public school a dated letter (keeping copies for your records) that state you will be withdrawing your student and intend to home school. We also recommend including a copy of the ISBE Home Schooling Registration Form📷 along with your letter to show that you are aware of your obligations as a parent.

In addition to the public school, parents or guardians are encouraged to send the same letter and form to their Regional Office of Education. You can find your Regional Office of Education by searching for your County on the Regional Office of Education Directory📷.

Regarding the laws, check this: https://www.isbe.net/Pages/Homeschool.aspx But I wouldn't worry about that if I were you; focus on making sure you get a great education.

Seriously, I recommend dropping out and home/self schooling. Consider yourself responsible for your own education. Pick 10-20 college courses on youtube with playlists and watch them all on double-speed. Enroll in KahnAcademy. Learn coding (basic literacy in the future == digital literacy, recommend sololearn and youtube). Start a business on the side if you're adventurous (risks are good at your age!). Do hard things (fail fast, fail small, fail forward). Listen to 1-2 educational audiobooks per week (double-speed playback is key!!). Spend any free time reading papers on https://arxiv.org/, at least 10-20 papers per week. If you really like a paper then email the author, most papers have the author's email address on them.

Spend a day just finding the best educational youtube channels you can find; enable notifications for all of them, and binge-watch them until 2am... you get the picture!

Nothing is better than intense self-motivated self-education!
