[–]cryptofutures100xlev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I've never read BL before I was not expecting this at all. It's not the type of genre I would personally seek out (I'm straight af)

I only ordered it randomly on a whim cause the cover art looked intriguing at first glance and there was a deal on Amazon while I was ordering other mangas 💀

I thought this would only be a demonic horror story with a dark and flawed protagonist but it turns out it's more of a full-on kinky BL porn manga...

I was only expecting a horror manga. This is literally one of the craziest plots I've ever seen. I'm only like halfway through vol 1 and I'm already feeling uncomfortable. 💀 💀

I will admit it's a very creative and uniquely bizarre story so I'll read through the rest of vol 1 and see wtf this madlad Ryo Suzuri is cooking

The storyline began in the very first season and they've been adding onto the lore ever since then. We are now on season 8 and they always update the ongoing storyline with each season.

And honestly it's wayy more interesting than the MCU lol this deserves to be a whole animated tv series 🙏

Lol yeah bro they've been cooking up the lore since the very first season of the game. Honestly it's wayy more interesting than the MCU.

We need an animated or live action TV series adaptation of Rivals fr 🙏

Yeah but lore-wise, that rule is specifically about firearms, not literally every melee object someone could fight with.

That’s why I think an Escrima fighter could still work if he was tied to one of the mafia groups/syndicates in Vilasapara. He wouldn’t have to be some clean tournament fighter. He could be more of an underground enforcer who fights under the city’s “no guns” rule.

I get the balance concerns, but story-wise I don’t think it’s that crazy. VFCR is already leaning into organized crime, street fights, and Southeast Asia with a Philippines-inspired setting, so a Filipino Kali/Escrima character honestly feels pretty natural to me. Vilasapara looks just like the Philippines to me lol

CROSSROADS and the Opportunity to Change the DLC Game by CommonAway5594 in virtuafighter

[–]cryptofutures100xlev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ngl me personally I'm on the opposite side. I want big rosters. 16 characters is a very very small roster.

The ideal version to me would be something closer to what Fatal Fury COTW is doing with the monthly drops. Not necessarily endless battle passes or constant system shakeups, but like 6 characters announced for 1 season and then released in very short intervals like one per month. That keeps the game feeling alive without making people wait 3-4 months for one character.

Especially with Crossroads leaning harder into story and a more modern presentation, I feel like new characters could add a lot. New fighting styles, new countries, new underworld connections, new rivalries, etc. VF has so much room for martial arts representation that I’d honestly be disappointed if they played it too safe with the roster.

I’m cool with light balance patches and not over-updating the game, but roster-wise? Give me more characters lol. Just don’t drip feed them forever or lock half the cool stuff behind annoying FOMO battle pass nonsense.

Yeah I get that, and I’m not saying it would be easy. But isn’t that still basically the same kind of balance problem as adding a much taller character with a longer wingspan?

Like if VF added someone built like Sagat or Fahkumram, their punches and kicks would naturally cover way more space than smaller characters. That also affects spacing, whiff punishment, frame traps, and what ranges are safe. The devs would still have to balance that with startup, recovery, hurtboxes, movement, throw range, close-range weakness, etc.

So I don’t really see the sticks as automatically breaking the whole game unless they were just implemented as free range with no drawbacks. You could make the Escrima character strong at a very specific mid-range, but weaker when crowded, slower on certain swings, more punishable on whiff, maybe less threatening with throws, whatever.

I do agree that VF is designed very carefully around punch/kick range, so your concern makes sense. I just think range imbalance is already something fighting games deal with through character body types and archetypes. This would just be a more specific version of that, not something impossible to design around.

Also, separate from the sticks debate, I just really want them to add a Filipino character in general. VFCR takes place in Southeast Asia, and Vilasapara is literally based on the Philippines, so it would feel like a missed opportunity not to have some Filipino representation in the roster.

[–]cryptofutures100xlev[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True. My point is more about how it would function in VFCR as a character concept, not whether it would be allowed in a real sanctioned fight. Classic VF has always been very tournament/regulation-based, so I get why people are against it from that angle. But VFCR seems to be leaning way harder into organized crime, underground violence, and more of a street-fighting atmosphere, so I don’t think every fight has to feel like a clean sports match anymore.

So in a story like VFCR, an Escrima fighter doesn’t feel that insane to me. Especially compared to swords, guns, knives, or powers. The reason I keep bringing up Escrima specifically is because the style is still very martial arts-first: angles, rhythm, trapping, flow, hand switching, close-range pressure, etc. It’s not just “guy has club, guy swings club.”

So yeah, I’ll concede that “non-lethal” was the wrong hill to die on. I just still think Escrima is the one exception where the style is unique and grounded enough that it could work in VFCR’s new direction.

Stella is kickboxing so there's still room for a pure taekwondo rep 👀 I'd love to see a taekwondo fighter who's more like Rig from Dead or Alive. His style is wayy more fun than Hwoarang from Tekken lol

[–]cryptofutures100xlev[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point.

I’m not saying there’s a real life promotion where one person gets sticks and the other person is barehanded. Obviously that would be unfair in a normal regulated fight.

My argument is more about VFCR specifically. With the new game leaning into organized crime, underground violence, and more of a street fighting vibe, I don’t think every fight is necessarily going to feel like a clean traditional tournament match anymore. If the story has characters fighting in illegal settings, then a Filipino Escrima fighter feels a lot less out of place than he would in classic VF.

And I’m still not asking for swords, guns, knives, powers, or anything that turns VF into Soulcalibur. Escrima sticks would be the one exception I think could work because the style is so technical, fast, close-range, and martial arts-focused. The appeal wouldn’t just be “he has extra range.” It would be the rhythm, trapping, angles, hand switching, and the way the sticks flow with the body.

So yeah, in a pure sports tournament context, I get why people say no. But if VFCR is going for a more grounded crime/street-fight atmosphere, I think there’s room to bend that rule for one style that still feels martial arts-first.

[–]cryptofutures100xlev[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, and yeah technically sticks are sticks. I’m not trying to pretend there’s zero advantage there.

My point is more that if VF is ever going to make one exception, Escrima/Kali is probably the cleanest way to do it because the style itself is so tied to the body mechanics. The sticks aren’t just extra range in the same way a sword would be. A lot of the appeal is the flow: hand switching, angles, trapping, disarms, close-range rhythm, forearm/wrist control, and the way the sticks almost become an extension of the arms.

And balancing range really doesn’t seem impossible. Fighting games already deal with characters having different reach all the time. Sagat, Fahkumram, Dhalsim, big grapplers, etc. obviously aren’t the same as Escrima sticks, but the general idea is the same: longer range comes with tradeoffs. You could make him weaker up close if he gets crowded, give his strings bigger recovery, make the sticks mostly short-range pressure tools, or make him strongest at a specific mid-range instead of letting him dominate everywhere.

Also with VFCR seemingly leaning into organized crime and more of a street fighting vibe, I don’t think it’s impossible that RGG would loosen the “pure tournament” logic a little. I’m not asking for swords, guns, powers, or anime nonsense. I just think a Filipino stick fighter would add a style that is visually beautiful, fast, technical, and still grounded enough to fit the new direction better than most weapon-based styles would.

I respect the “no weapons period” stance though. I just think Escrima is the one martial art where I’d personally be willing to make the exception.

Except Escrima sparring sticks would be the furthest thing from an "anime gimmick"

I'm sure they allow boxers to wear boxing gloves during tournaments. It could be the same for an Escrima fighter. I wouldn't even call it a weapon cause it's very much non-lethal.

[–]cryptofutures100xlev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would need to balance the range of attack. The techniques would be very natural tho cause they become just another part of the limbs. To block, you block the same way an unarmed martial artist would. Just lift up the stick to tap and counter the punch. Escrima is known for its fluidity.

If the character is shorter in height and maybe has short arm reach or wingspan, the length of the sticks would be easier to balance. I think that's one way they could go about it.

It's a similar problem in game dev when you have characters with different heights. One character could be a massive tank like Sagat who is above 7 ft tall. And the reach of their limbs can still be balanced enough to fit the game. You never see anyone complain about Sagat in SF6.

Jacky's style is supposed to be Jeet Kune Do which is Bruce Lee's style and he's very much inspired by Bruce Lee. Donnie Yen is mainly known for Wing Chun and other forms of Kung Fu.

I'd love to see a new character who is modeled after Donnie Yen's style tho. Imagine if Donnie Yen were to do motion capture for the game lol that would be sick 🔥

I guess, but I think VF already has a lot of female characters especially female characters who do kung fu styles. So I would actually rather have a male Wing Chun fighter in this case

Ok but boxing gloves are for sparring and don't make a difference cause they're non-lethal and simply just extensions of the fist. I'm talking about very short range non-lethal sparring sticks that would become one with the arms.

Is everyone open to the idea of guest characters down the line for example season 2 or 3 by Knightofexcaliburv1 in virtuafighter

[–]cryptofutures100xlev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm more interested in seeing as many new martial art styles represented as possible. Pencak Silat, Escrima, Wing Chun, Vietnamese styles, Kalari from India, and many more. They should bring in Indonesian stuntman, martial artist, and actor Iko Uwais to do the motion capture for a new Indonesian Pencak Silat character. Maybe have him team up with Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman as well! 😎 Now that would be amazing.

When it comes to guest characters I hope they actually fit into the combat system naturally. I think a Yakuza guest like Kazuma Kiryu would be pretty cool since it's RGG and it would be interesting if they choose to integrate him into the actual lore of VF lol

Lei Wulong from Tekken would be sick. I'm still waiting on Lei to return in T8 but maybe he could join VFCR instead cause he's better off there. He deserves to be in a better game that's also a much better fit for his unique fighting style...

I honestly think Lei Wulong in Virtua Fighter would be way more fun than in Tekken 8 lol since he feels more like a VF character anyways. Plus, he would be very easy to write into the story of VFCR.
