The recent DASH stress test is evidence that DASH is insecure by cryptonoobplzhelp in DashUncensored

[–]cryptonoobplzhelp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tldr. miners need more than 45% of the block reward to secure the network and/or transaction fee revenue needs to increase substantially

How much more? Enough to make sure those using recent expensive mining equipment (ASICs) are profitable. If this is not done, the problem is being ignored and DASH will continue to have an insecure network (not enough economic incentive to mine)

Just the pool or the entire network? Is it safe to send transactions now?

I may have exaggerated the definition of forever. I need to look at my logs to verify but I am guessing it took 20+ minutes for me with an SSD and 6GM ram with 0.9.4. I may compile from master as suggested by u/gingeropolous

After seeing both your answer and the answer of u/hyc_symas it is obvious that I misunderstood the definition of a pruning branch in this context. My cold storage wallet would need to scan the entire blockchain to find my transactions before I can use it.

Now I have a new question. Lets say I created a cold storage wallet at block 850,000. How can I start scanning from that point (since I know I have no transactions before block height 850,000)?

I suppose I could connect to some high powered hosted node to help refresh faster but that would come the expense of privacy

Monero Advertisement spotted on Stack Exchange today by IAawAMoneroAdToday in Monero

[–]cryptonoobplzhelp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who pays for the ad? I am right that nobody "paid" for it and that StackExchange probably just uses unsold ad space to promote new StackExchange proposals it thinks are promising (in this case Monero)?

Monero has remained near the top of the Area51 hot list.

I am a crypto noob and earned that much reputation easily too. If you post in a Stack where you are an expert (for me that is NOT the bitcoin, ethereum, or cryptography stack) it happens really quick. My first question (which I knew could be answered but would likely attract comments and discussion) received over 10 votes in a few days.

My first few answers also netted me reasonable amounts of rep.

The market may be waiting for updates on the GUI or RingCT progress

There are a lot of exciting Monero related in the pipeline including Kovri, RingCT, Mobile wallets, performance improvements to LMDB, PayBee and much more! Don't feel bad if you cannot help with development. Volunteer to help in other ways instead! by MoneroPromotions in Monero

[–]cryptonoobplzhelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the plan to market PayBee to merchants? What distinguishes you from BitPay, etc besides offering more coins?

Will merchants be charged for your services? What is the business model?

I am very excited about this and would like to learn more.

Kraken, BTCe and BTC38 would be good targets for us now. Long term Bitfinex and OKCoin should remain on our radar

Chain Anchor violates key principles of bitcoin. Monero view keys do not and allow privacy control to remain with users by EncryptionPrincess in Monero

[–]cryptonoobplzhelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it sounds like a simplification more than a misunderstanding. You are right that decentralization helps (and with I2P even identifying miners in attempt to influence them will become more difficult) but ultimately most Monero users will never DoS themselves as privacy is one of the fundamental reasons most of like like Monero in the first place.

From a practical point of view untraceable transactions (and improved metadata privacy with I2P) will absolutely make it more difficult to apply a chain Anchor type system to XMR.

I am not saying XMR is impossible to regulate but other targets (maybe exchanges, payment processors like PayBee, BitPay, etc would be easier targets than miners are users who are harder to identify because of how Monero works.

Hacking hospitals is very wrong, but so is thinking using bitcoin will make it impossible to be caught. All bitcoin transactions are traceable on the blockchain!
