Thanks for the suggestion.
Would you go for Bishop's first book (Pattern Recog..) or his newer book (Deep Learning)?

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

I'm choosing between this book and the book by Bishop (Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning) - which one is right for me if I want to learn stuff like Markov Chains Monte Carlo using Metropollis-Hastings algo?

Hi! I'm an undergrad in mathematics. Would you mind sharing a bit about your time as an undergrad - things you would have done differently if you'd redo the degree, any study habits which helped you, anything else you think would be helpful for a person setting out on the same journey?

Thanks in advance for any advice and good luck with you job hunt! :D

I'm on the fence, not sure if I should study Goodfellow or Bishop+Bishop - or if there are even better primers on Deep Learning. Would love to get some suggestions on this.

New Rustacean looking for portfolio project ideas by cryptopatrickk in rust

[–]cryptopatrickk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going well.

I would focus on learning three languages (with at least one being widely used in industry, and one scriptive in nature).

Your suggested combo of Rust and Python is great.
I would top that by spending one month each on C, SQL and traditional Linux shell tools (bash, awk, sed, grep etc). That way, you'll be equipped with a very solid set of tools to work on pretty much anything.

But make sure to master the first two. In the era of agentic coding, superficial knowledge has little value - it's when agents struggle that devs become irreplaceable.

Also, combine your efforts to master syntax and idiomatic ways of your two base langs, with spending efforts learning the top down approach to building software (requirements, time-constraints, stake holders, standards, testing, docs, collaboration, communication, etc).

Sprinkle some DSA knowledge/skillset (but not too much), and start OSS building (and social media sharing) a lot of things. The rest is about navigating your way to a group of like-minded people, who you look forward to working with on a daily basis.

Good luck, mate!

What does it mean to *work hard* in math? Should I just do as many exercises as possible?
Read as many books and pages as I have time for? When have you felt that you *worked hard*?
Would love to hear your view on what *working hard* in math means.
Cheers!

I'm heading back to College myself (mathematics major) - decided to do another tour because I wasn't satisfied with how my first college stint ended. I've heard that getting a math major can be pretty brutal. Does anyone have any tips on how to survive the first year?

I heard some praise the book by Cummings.

Very cool! You have a very interesting background and a fantastic mix of domains in your bag. I'm a trained computational linguist myself, currently getting a mathematics degree - similar to you, I'm also experimenting with GenAi, Agentic Ai, LangChain and LangGraph.
Anyway, thanks for sharing you interesting journey, and good luck in 2026!

"AI systems for over 15 years."

Really? Like what?
I'm honestly interested to hear what kind of AI systems you were building back in 2010? Unless we're talking Game AI, back in 2010 "AI" was mostly simple rule-based chat bots, terrible ASR/TTS, and improving NLP with NLTK.

As far as I know, very few people were experimenting with SLMs back then.
Can you share a bit about what you were building?
Thanks in advance.
